Learning Objective: Be able to explain the relationship between molecular
structure and the driving force of a reaction.
Assignment Description: Using the reaction you have been assigned, write a
short (1 page) description of the structural features of each of the molecules
involved. Then, using your own words, describe how each feature drives the given
reaction. Invoke physical features (bond length, hybridization, steric conditions, 3Dorbital configuration, etc) to support reactivity features (electrophilicity,
nucleophilicity, stereoselectivity). In addition to describing the course of the
reaction, be sure to justify the product that is formed in terms of regio- and
stereochemistry.
After your first draft is complete and submitted, you will form groups of four
(everyone must have a different reaction), and you will peer review your other
group members assignments. Reviews can include writing critiques but should
focus primarily on content. Are the connections made clear to you? Is anything
missing? You will submit your three reviews for credit due xx/xx, and class on that
day will be spent discussing the outcomes in your groups.
