animation film
Scheme:

No. Of Lessons:

Group:

Three Stop Motion Animation films. topic

road safety.

8 Double & 16 single

5the Year
16 students

Total Time:

600 mins or 10 hours

Aims
To help students to
1. Examine issues of road safety, describing, investigating and conveying the rules
of the road through the medium of 3 Stop-Motion animated films. (Bring in road
info, Cillian, check road safety commercials on in the media)
2. Understand the process involved in working as part of a production team; set
design, character development, props, lighting, continuity, camera operator,
sound.
3. Create, as a team, an animation film.
4. The second year students had created a 3D street of houses, inspired by the
village, shops, barns, and pubs. The fifth year students identified which used the
buildings they wanted to use and sought written permission from the artists to
use their work in the films. They then designed a set for each film around the
scaled buildings.
5. Appreciate the ethical and consent issues pertinent to documentary film making
of this nature. (Not to include the faces of the students).

Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme

On completion pupils should be able to:

1. Debate on the impact and importance of road safety from the perspective of
various road users, cyclist, drivers and pedestrians.

2. Understand the process involved in stop motion animation. Develop a

storyboard that effectively illustrates road safety issues based on their research.
Scene structures, lead in, action, close ups annotating details of importance.
(Look at examples of how story boards are made)

3. Identifying characters to be used in the film - Making props and design a set
taking into consideration proportion and scale of the character and over all
aesthetic of the work.

4. Make a stop motion animated film that demonstrates an understanding and

knowledge of the technical features involved in making a stop motion animated
film: a camera and external sound mike and knowledge of procedure photo,
move object, photo etc.

5. Select and download found footage/sound and capture original footage

purposefully for the sound track

6. Document the process of making the stop motion animated film.

7. Understand the inter-connectedness of the each role within the team i.e., set
designer and prop maker and work effectively as a team.

Digital Investigating

The film is about Teddys day. He doesnt like getting up in the morning, taking after his
human, so he needs prompting. He likes to travel in the bag and the car. So he gets
himself in to the bag and straps himself in to the car. He pretends that he is driving, real
boy racer. He also has a job to do when his human leaves the car, holding the parking
ticket so the traffic warden can see it and acting as a guard teddy. Teddy loves watching
films, his favorite is love story between a teddy and a sheep, hes a romantic so it makes
him cry. He has learned to write and writes his human little notes.

Shows a bakeshop and baker at
work. A rat runs along the floor
and climbs up one of the flour
barrels. The baker spies the rat,
seizes a handful of dough, throws
it at him, completely covering his
body and sticking him fast to the
barrel. The baker then begins
making busts of different
celebrities, such as Buffalo Bill,
Admiral Schley, and others. It is marvellous to see how quickly a face is formed out of
the pliable dough. Finally he makes a very comical Irishman with cocked hat, clay pipe,
and Donegal whiskers. By one twist of the dough the Irishman's face is changed from a
broad smile to an expression of disgust. Two Irish bakers now appear on the scene,
seize the offender and dip him into a barrel of flour. When drawn out, he is completely
covered with the white meal, but having filled his mouth with flour, he blows it into the
eyes of the two bakers, who fall to the floor in a heap.

Teaching/Learning Strategies:

Group and pared work. Demonstrations and experimentation. Instruction on how to use
equipment. Handouts.

Use of Digital Media:

Cameras and down loading found footage. Projected map on white board to be traced
over. ZOOM external mike to record sound. Stop motion animation software and iMovie
software. Overhead projector will be used to show clips and to enlarge the
images/maps to scale to create the set on which the stop motion will be filmed.

Differentiation:

Establish a routine and clear simple rules, seat SEN students to have clear view of
board and demonstration.
Break tasks into small clearly structured steps and allow adequate time for completion.
Give one instruction at a time. Keep verbal instructions brief and simple. Task analysis
of each aspect of the painting process, paint management, colour theory and drawing:

presented in slide and printed form. Examples of work in progress created in the studio
in tandem with the development of the scheme.
Task analysis of each aspect of the film making process.
Screencast of the process of editing a film.

Literacy:

Students will improve their literacy and descriptive language in a variety of ways.
Communicating and working in a group
Story boarding and scripting ideas
Learning new film and documentary vocabulary .
Interviewing each other about the process of filmmaking.
Interviewing 3rd level students about their attitudes and approaches to road
safety.
Debate on issues surrounding road safety.

Numeracy:

students will improve numeracy by

Sequencing video files
Slicing sound and video files to a certain time.
Scaling and map drawing and prop making.
Operating camera and external mike.
Project management structure, time line with deadline date and weekly target
reviews.
Sequence and quantity of frames order and range.

Materials/Resources/Facilitates:

Digital cameras, tri pods, recorder, lighting

Found footage, Lights and manipulations of lights.
Card, very large sheets of paper, cutting tools, glue.
