Describe what you learned and how it relates to
the competency. Explain why it was meaningful.
B-2-1 Demonstrate ability to apply critical
thinking and clinical judgment in the planning of care. One significant learning experience that I have had during the nursing foundations 1002 course that is related to the CLPNA competency is administering insulin injections. This has become a significant learning experience because I have learnt the necessary specifics to properly and confidently give this injection to a client. I have been educated in the appropriate skills and furthered my knowledge regarding insulin which otherwise was limited before this class. An example of the learning experience that I have encountered with the skill of administering injections was learning the knowledge in theory class and then practicing in the Nursing foundations 1002 lab. During Nursing Foundations 1002 theory I have learnt to assess the client before administering the insulin injection. During the assessment process the client will be observed for signs of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia as well as the clients blood sugar levels. This will tell me if the client is fit for the injection, and if their levels are within the normal range of 4mmol/L8mmol/L. It was in lab where I learnt that the angle of insertion for a subcutaneous insulin injection is 45 or 90, to use a syringe measuring in units, and the needle is to be a 29gauge inch. Learning the skills in theory and practicing them in lab is an example of a learning experience that I have faced during the administration of an insulin injection. I have learned to use my clinical judgement and critical thinking in regards to giving an insulin injection During the process of administering insulin injections I have learnt the essential clinical judgment skills such as the angle of insertion, type of syringe, and the size of needle. These skills have given me the background knowledge to make adequate clinical judgments when planning care for a type one diabetic.

Use the proficiency categories to rate their
proficiency in the chosen CLPNA competency. Explain what was done to achieve the competency.
Describe how you will apply this learning in
your current and future nursing practice.
Additionally I utilized my critical thinking skills
by exercising my assessment abilities to determine if the client is hyperglycemic or hypoglycemic and if the dosage is in fact beneficial and safe given the clients status. These skills are meaningful because it promotes overall client safety while they are in need of nursing care. It is important to be able to apply the talents learnt in real life and under pressure. The broad spectrum of knowledge learnt develops a way of thinking that can be applied in diverse circumstances. The chosen CLPNA competency was B-2-1: demonstrate ability to apply critical thinking and clinical judgment in the planning of care. I believe I have the proficiency rating of good because I have complete understanding of the administration of insulin injections in theory, scenarios, and in the nursing practice. This competency has been reached by attending every theory class and lab. During this time I have taken vivid notes pertaining to the subject of insulin injections, asked questions regarding technique, and confidently practiced my skills. However I do not have the rating of excellent because administering insulin injections is not yet seamless or automatic in my everyday nursing, this skill still needs more time and practice. I will apply this learning to my current nursing practice by transferring the knowledge learnt in regards to the insulin injections to other similar injections such as heparin. During the Nursing Foundations 1002 coarse medication administration is a prominent aspect. The several different skills I have gained betters my abilities overall on all characteristics of the medicine administration practice. My learning experience and the knowledge acquired such as assessment skills will be applied to my future nursing practice. This will be done by continuously practicing and bettering my skills pertaining to insulin until complete confidence is reached. Having confidence in the knowledge and skills pertaining to insulin injections will ensure this skill will be done correctly and safely following
