INFLUENCE OF DIFERENT JOINTS ON QUALITY OF DINING CHAIRS
Abstract:Products quality presents one of the main causes of every contemporary
organized production, which includes it, in group of basic exit characteristics. Ac
cording to national standard, quality mark is based on testing of its quality character
istics. A characteristic of quality has been divided into four groups of demands: func
tionality (functional dimensions and stability tests), rigidity, surface rigidity, quality
of materials and work piece accuracy. Dining chair has been investigated by use of
diferent wood joints, and some remarks on construction has been given. Two groups

of investegated chairs has been mounted by use of metal fittings, and one group has
been connested with wood dowels by use of PVA wood glue.

INFLUENCE OF DIFERENT JOINTS ON QUALITY OF DINING CHAIRS
Summary
Chair quality is controlled by quality characteristics, which are classified in four groups:
functionality, durability, surface resistance, quality of materials and work-piece accuracy. Based
on the previous tests, it was concluded that the critical point in chair construction exposed to static
loads was the joint rear leg - side rail, which was also confirmed by this study. The samples were
tested with three different joints in the critical point side rail - rear leg, two of which were made
as assembling, and one was fixed. In the first group, the critical joint was solved by two screws of
8mm, length 50 mm.
In the second group, the joint rear leg - side rail was solved by two screw joints, of 8 mm,
length 60 mm. In the third group, aiming at the construction improvement, the joint rear leg - side
rail was fixed, and it was connected by two wood dowels, size 1050 mm.
The comparative analysis of test results of rear leg - side rail strength, which was performed
in three variants, shows that the maximal strength can be expected if rear leg and side rail are joined
by two screw joints. As the maximal achieved strength is just a little above the minimal strength pre
scribed by the national standard, in order to strengthen the joint, an additional support in the form
of angle plug is proposed. Taking into account the width of side rail, it is impossible to apply the
triple dowel of 1050 mm, in the applied drilling system of 32 mm. However, by the application of
the multiple punch drilling machine, it is possible to apply the triple dowel with interaxial distance
lower than 32 mm.
Further enhancement of the construction is possible, i.e. corner support in the joints of side
rail and chair legs. Taking into account the assemble-disassemble construction, it is necessary to se
lect the corner supports of the same type. Although it was assessed that the critical point in the con
struction is the joint side rail - rear leg, we can also take into consideration the joint side rail - front
leg, if it is taken into account that, based on the previous research, this joint is the second critical
point in chair construction. The selection of different wood joints from those used in the joint side
rail - front leg can increase the durability of dining chairs, and in this way also the total quality.
