Nutrition classes to learn about the benefits of

in the spring.

Theory of Change

Many communities
lack fresh foods such
as fruits and
vegetables because
they live in food
deserts or simply
cannot afford them.

I will provide free

vegetables and fresh
fruits for those who
lack by starting my
own community
garden.

I will measure how far I

have come by making
an inventory at the end
of the month and
seeing how much fruits
and vegetables I
started with and how
many are left.

Sample Donor Letter

Dear Michelle Obama,
This spring I am working with my community to make a garden free for anyone to take home. After
doing some research about our city, I have discovered that we do in fact live in a food desert. A food
desert is when there is not enough fresh fruits or vegetables available to families and they are forced
to eat whatever is left, like processed foods. This can affect the health of the people that are not
fortunate enough to receive fresh foods and soon lead to obesity. In order to help my community, my
faculty and I desperately need YOUR help! With a gracious donation of $2,500 we would be able to :
1. buy packets of seed and new gardening tools to plant
2. new nutrition books & notebooks for 1 of our programs
3. soil for our garden
Thank you so much for you time and considering our organization as a possible donation. This
donation would be beneficial to families in my community.
Sincerely,
Mellody Da Cruz

Sample Grant
Grow a Garden
Pawtucket Rhode Island
$1,800 requested
2. My gardening nonprofit targets families who are not fortunate to live in areas that have fresh produce or
simply cannot afford them.
3. One of the programs that my nonprofit will be available for the public is our cooking class. It will take
place in the ICS kitchen on the weekends. In this class, I will have a person to come in with me and we will
teach the children how to cook nutritious meals with the fresh foods we grow in the community garden.
4. My expected outcome would be for the children who attend the cooking class learn many recipes they
can take home to their familes along with the fruits and vegetables they take from the garden.
5. The money from this grant will be strickly used for the Cooking program ran by myself and another staff.
It will go towards renting out a kitchen pots, pans, knives, mixing bowls, cutting boards, etc.
6. The way I will measure this programs success is sending out surveys to the students attending the
cooking class and ask them if they used any recipes they have learned and did they use mainly fruits,
vegetables, and herbs.

Community event for your nonprofit

Community meal once a month
held in the multi at Blackstone Academy
food made from fruits, vegetables and herbs from
the community garden
$10 per take out food container

Evaluation Plan
I will measure the amount of progress I make by:
Take inventory at the beginning and end of the month
Monitor how many people take fruits or vegetables daily
Send out neighborhood surveys to see how frequently they
visit the garden

Thank you for your time!
