B141 Volunteer Equip Experience

SLIDE 1: EQUIP EXPERIENCE

Opening Icebreaker
SLIDE 2: QUESTIONS
Why did you start serving?
What means the most to you about serving?
What do you want to accomplish through serving?
SLIDE 3: BE ONE
Our theme for today is B141. That is not referring to a Boeing
airplane model.
What we want you to walk away with today is an understanding
that you can BE ONE person to make a lasting impact FOR ONE
child.
To get us started, watch this video.
SLIDE 4: Video: One Person Can Make a Difference
SLIDE 5: To make a difference you must first realize that you are
ONE who CAN make a difference and then you must BE ONE who
will make a difference.
All of us want to know that our serving makes a difference.
We have the desire to leave a lasting legacy.
This is NOT found
in possessions
You will never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul
In a job
Jobs come and they go
in accomplishments

These will fade or be exceeded

SLIDE 6: True significance is found in the influence and impact
you leave in the lives of others.
God has placed you in a position of influence and is giving you an
opportunity to make a significant impact and leave a legacy.
And heres a reality that is important for all of us to understand,
no matter the role you play in CFKids:
SLIDE 7: Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will
never give up on them, who understands the power of
connection, and insists that they become the best that they can
possibly be. Rita Pierson (Lifelong Educator)
Parents are the greatest influence in the life of a child, but the
more you learn about life stages, the more you will be convinced
that kids need a consistent adult in their lives, besides their
parents. Research, experts, and statistics suggest that kids who
have other adults in their lives have better odds at winning.
HINT: The phase consistent adult is actually code for weekly
Table Leader in Preschool or Circle Host in Elementary.
Every phase in a childs life needs the same thing: A CONSISTENT
ADULT.
Preschoolers need a consistent adult, because they can be
terrified by an unfamiliar face.
They need a consistent leader to embrace them so they
feel safe.
Elementary kids need a consistent adult, because they will
tell anything to a stranger.
They need a consistent leader to protect them and
engage them so they can believe.
Middle schoolers need a consistent adult, because nothing
else in their life is consistent.
They need a consistent leader to affirm them so they
will keep believing.
2

High schoolers need a consistent adult, because their only

trust people who show up consistently.
They need a consistent leader to mobilize them to
participate in something significant.
How do you influence and impact the kids you are?
SLIDE 8: FIND THE 1
#1: FIND THE 1
TABLE ACTIVITY (5 min): Pick the one thing on this list that you
are drawn to the most and share with someone around your table
why.
SLIDE 9: LIST
SLIDE 10: FIND THE 1
Just as you were drawn to one thing on the list, God can draw you
to one kids who could benefit from your investment.
There are many examples in the Bible of the importance of
focusing on the 1Here are 3 of those:
SLIDE 11: The Parable of the Lost Sheep
Shepherd will leave the herd to find the 1
SLIDE 12: Jesus and Zaccheaus
Making His way through the crowd, He was drawn to
Zaccheaus.
SLIDE 13: Woman Who Touched the Hem of Jesus
In the midst of the pushing crowd, Jesus was drawn to the
need of 1 woman.
SLIDE 14: Nicodemus
Jesus met with him individually.

SLIDE 15: Woman at the Well

Went to her and met with individually.
SLIDE 16: Phillip and Ethiopian Eunuch
God sent Phillip away from the crowd to this man.
SLIDE 17: FIND THE 1
TABLE ACTIVITY (5 min): Share story of someone who has
impacted and made significant difference your life.
Ask God to lead you to the one child He wants to use you to
influence and impact.
He will draw you to that one child.
All it takes is one person to make the difference in a childs life.
Youll notice on your handout a box with The One Is written
above it. After youve gone home and had time to think about
pray about it, write the name of the child who you believe God is
drawing you to in order to invest in his/her life.
SLIDE 18: GET TO KNOW THE 1
#2: Get to know the One - Once you Find the One, you need to
Get to Know the One
SLIDE 19: You cant influence someone you dont know. When a
child knows you are personally interested in him/her, it opens
his/her heart to your influence and impact.
TABLE ACTIVITY (5 min): On the blank paper provided at your
table, and using the colored pencils or crayons provided, draw a
quick sketch of 3 things that are important about your life right
now 3 things that would help someone know who you are. Well

give you a few minutes to do this and then you will share your
pictures with those at your table.
Heres some tips on how to get to know your kids:
Be consistent serve as often as possible kids need to see
the same face each week
Say his/her name often you shouldnt expect to be able to
speak into someones life if you cant remember their name.
Find out whats going on in his/her life.
Talk about his/her interests. Kids havent changed but
childhood has. Find out what they are interested in today.
What's his/her favorite movie?
What did his/her do this week?
How's school going?
What's his/her favorite sport's team?
What challenges or struggles are going on in his/her
life?
SLIDE 20: Example of Kyle Schwartz I Wish My Teacher Knew
Kyle Schwartz teaches third grade at Doull Elementary in Denver.
In an effort to build trust between her and her students, Schwartz
thought up a lesson plan called "I Wish My Teacher Knew."

For the activity, Schwartz's third graders jot down a thought for
their teacher, sharing something they'd like her to know about
them.
Heres an example of some of the writing from her students
SLIDE 21: I wish my teacher knew how much I miss my dad
because he got deported to Mexico when I was 3 years old and I
havent seen him in 6 years.

SLIDE 22: I wish my teacher knew sometimes my reading log is

not signed because my mom is not around a lot.
SLIDE 23: I want my teacher to know it feels like the class picks
on me. I hate that.
SLIDE 24: I wish my teacher knew I dont have a friend to play
with me.
SLIDE 25: I wish Mrs. King knew that I worry because my mom is
getting sick a lot and was in the hospital last night.
SLIDE 26: I wish my teacher knew that my birthday was in
February.
SLIDE 27: I wish my teacher knew that event though sometimes I
do not get good grades that I try. Also that I get stressed, but
when I come to your class I feel better.
Write this down:
SLIDE 28: If you want to help a kid know he/she matters, get
serious about knowing that kid.
SLIDE 29: GET INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE 1
#3: GET INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE 1 One of the ways to get
to know you kid is to being involved in his/her life.
TABLE ACTIVITY (5 minutes): How can you live this out with the
kids in your ministry area? How can you get to know the 1 youre
are called to impact? Discuss some ideas around your table.
Share What are some ideas you came up with?

Being willing to sit down and play with kids makes such a
difference. And it can actually be very simple. Check out this
example:
SLIDE 30: Example of man on plane with little girl - video
#4: COMMUNICATE WITH THE 1
SLIDE 31: COMMUNICATE WITH THE 1
TABLE ACTIVITY (5 mins): Brainstorm some ideas of ways to
communicate with your kids during your service time and beyond
that will help you invest in them.
Share your ideas (2 mins)
Specific ideas:
Postcards (provided by your Area Coordinator)
Miss you
Birthday
Phone calls (coordinate with your Area Coordinator)
Connect with the parent first to seek permission
SLIDE 32: DISCIPLE THE 1
The last point for today is: #5 DISCIPLE THE 1
SLIDE 33: Matthew 28:19-20 - Go and make disciples.
How do we do that? Notice what the steps are in this verse:
SLIDE 34: Verse highlights
1. Baptize we want kids to take faith steps; we call these
milestones.
a. One milestones begin with our youngest through our
Parent/Child Dedication. This is where we partner with
parents to help they understand their responsibilities as

spiritual leaders, and then we pray a blessing over the

lives of your little ones.
b. For our elementary age kids we encourage our Starting
Line classes. Did you know that 50% of people who
accept Christ do so before the age of 12? We work in
the ripest field. So as you have kids who ask you how
to have a relationship with Christ, encourage them to
attend Startling Line with their parents to learn about
faith commitment and baptism.
2. Teaching each weekend we have the opportunity to help
kids know God by studying His word in a creative, interactive
way that makes it relevant for their lives every day of the
week.
3. Observe we want kids to love and obey God. We can help
them observe the things of God by making sure that we
observe them as well.
4. Connect to Jesus We want kids to know EVERYDAY that
Jesus is with them. One of the best way to help them
experience this is through you. As you connect to them,
they can better understand that Jesus want to connect with
them. You may be the only Jesus they ever experience.
If you think about it, many of you are here because someone
discipled you. Think about who that was right now. Picture them
in your mind. Think about the impact theyve has in your life.
Who would like to share who discipled you? (get a couple
answers)
SLIDE 35: AFFIRM THE ONE
Our words are powerful. What we say to our kids, and how we
say it, leaves a lasting mark.
SLIDE 36: PROVERBS 18:21
Words kill, words give life;
theyre either poison or fruityou choose.
Proverbs 18:21 (MSG)

TABLE ACTIVITY (2 mins): Brainstorm some words of affirmation

you can speak to your kids.
Heres a example of the impacting of speaking life to kids.
SLIDE 37: Denzel Washington video
SLIDE 38: AFFIRM THE ONE
SLIDE 39: PRAY FOR THE 1
SLIDE 40: Luke 22:31-32
In Luke 22:31-32, Jesus was talking to one of his disciples: Simon,
Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have
prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.
We need to pray for our kids, encouraging them to never give in
or give up.
When prayer requests are shared, really pray for them
Call parents and ask them how you can pray for their child
Let them know you prayed for them send a little note of
encouragement
Be one who is standing at the finish line heres what we
mean:
SLIDE 41: Standing at the finish line- VIDEO CLIP
SLIDE 42: THERE ARE THOSE WHO SERVE AND THERE ARE
THOSE WHO LEAVE A LEGACY THE DIFFERENCE IS THE ONE.
I want to end with a reminder of where we started:
SLIDE 43: True significance is found in the influence and impact
you leave in the lives of others.
