Sally Mann
Sally graduated from school in 1969 after studying photography
and attended college straight after.
As well as a well-known photographer, sally also takes time out
of her life to write books. Her third book received the most
recognition. The New York Times said "Probably no
photographer in history has enjoyed such a burst of success in
the art world." This book was focused on 5 key aspects of life,
insecurity, loneliness, injury, sexuality and death. She had nude
images of her 3 children who was frowned upon, some people
called it 'child pornography" the law got involved at one point
but sally was never charged.

Sally has 3 children and a husband.

A film was based entirely on her and her work in 2006

called what remains
She took a lot of images in black and white. Mostly portraits.
One of her cameras where old, wore down and even the lens
was broken but she still used it. It made her different from all
the other photographs that would spend thousands of pounds
on camera equipment. It put her own mark on all the images
she took. They would have scratches or random dots on the
photo. She really thinks about the lighting she uses and how
she uses it. She would always use natural light (sun, moon) to
archive what she wanted.
Sally Manns main photography genre is portrait photography.
Portrait photography is a photo of a person or a group of people
that displays expression and mood.
Sally uses a wide range of techniques in her photography, she
experiments with aperture a lot to bring out the main subject in
each photo. She takes a lot of images in black and white. One

Sally communicates lots of emotion in her images. She portrays
them by telling a story through her photos.
Eric Staller
Eric Staller born in 1947 is an American Photographer. He has
been a great inspiration for me because his work is very similar
to what I want to do. He captures various types of photographs
using a long shutter speed such as light drawings. As I will be
experimenting with Light drawings in my final assignment I felt
it was a good idea to educate myself more about his work and
what he does.
This is my favourite
Eric staller image and
when I take my light
drawing image I want
to try and recreate
this. I presume Eric
choose this street
because he knew it
would be quite and
nobody would get in
the shot and there for
spoil the image. He
went here when it was dark so the light he made would stand
out. I like this image because it shows that you can create
anything within photography, for example in this image it looks
like Eric has tried to create a bridge or some sort of tunnel. He
would have had to use a long shutter speed and a low ISO for
this.

This is another image I really

admire from Eric. It shows
emotion and beauty. The first
thing you notice in the photo
is a person made of light, you
instantly get the feeling hes
lonely. Also, you can see the
stars in the background, they
are just starting to create a
light trail therefor the shutter
speed used must have been
more than 10 minutes.

Nick Danziger
Nicki Danzinger is an award winning British Photographer who
was born on the 22nd of April 1958. His photography style is
very unique, he mainly focuses on people in troubling
circumstances especially young people.
I recently went to an exhibition of his in the imperial war
museum. The topic was women living in major conflict zones
titled Eleven Women Facing War. He visited Bosnia, Israel, Gaza,
Sierra Leone, Columbia and Afghanistan in 2001. He wanted to
capture a raw image of what it was like for women living in
those conditions. In the exhibition, there were 33 images
mounted on the walls and 11 short films.
Nick Danzinger also photographed children in troubled
conditions. This 10 year old orphan Mah Bibi was begging for
food while looking after her 2 brothers. This photo was taken in
Afghanistan it shows a lot of emotion such as sadness and
loneliness. By looking at this photo you are more likely to focus
on the feelings of the girl because its in black and white. If it
was in colour you would naturally be drawn to different parts of
the image which takes the viewer away from the main subject
the photographer wanted to capture. Nick went back to

Dean Punter

Afghanistan in 2006 to
revisit Mah but she had
vanished. Its very likely
thats shed died.
This
image

represents the struggles some of the

women have out there. Not only are they in
poverty but some having physical
deformities like this woman makes life
harder for them.
