Genocide in

Afghanistan

Geography
The country was pushed into shape by a treaty
made between Russia and Great Britain, the two
major forces in Asia in the 19th century.
After the treaty was made to separate Russia, north
of the Oxus River, and the British, south of the
Himalayas, and to keep Turkestan from expanding
its borders, Afghanistan was the resultant Buffer
State in between the countries.
Not really having any say in the matters, the
Afghans have been complaining ever since about
their borders.

Geography
The shape of the buffer
state is very irregular, as
it follows along the rivers.
The north-eastern arm of
the country is where the
Northern Alliance now
controls, after being
forced out of main
leadership.
The mountain Hindu Kush
splits the north and south
of the country, dividing the
languages and culture of
the country in two.

History
Afghanistan has been fighting a civil war for 23 years
since 1978.
During the war, more than 4 million refugees have left the
country.
The Taliban are fighting against the Northern Alliance
and defended Osama bin Laden, at least in part,
because the Northern Alliance leaders, who were in
power previously, were much worse than the Taliban.

Recent Information
Oct. 1, 2013
Details of the nearly 5000 Afghans arrested,
tortured, and killed by Afghan communist
government in 1978 were uncovered. President
Hamid Karzai said that reconciliation is more
important than prosecutions.
Sept. 10, 2013
Afghan police arrest two militants in the executionstyle murder of and Indian writer who had written
critically of the Taliban

Solutions
One theory is that the country needs to be split into two,
as the varied cultures conflict with each other.
The southerners speak primarily Pashtu, who are almost
all Sunni Muslims; the northerners speak mostly Turkic
languages and Farsi, and are mostly Shia Muslims.
Many Pathans believe Shia are non-believers, so they
wage war upon them.
Since the north cannot defend itself from the south, it
would be incorporated into the former Soviet Republics
of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
This would give the opportunity to Iran to take back
Herat, the won major western city of Afghanistan.

Womens rights
Many fear that possible post-Taliban government leaders
will include former heads of factions in the mujahideen
who dont support womens rights.
A solution could be to appoint more open minded leaders
and include more women in government, but this is
easier said than done in a patriarchal society like
Afghanistans.
