Three courses I know I want to take while at UW:

1. Communications 428/JSIS B 428- The Media and Peace
Course description: Investigates the complex relationships among the media, journalistic
practice, and our understanding and pursuit of peace.
This is definitely a class I want to take because I am extremely interested in the medias
role, specifically journalism, in spurring social change and trying to create peace and
stability among people. While the media is dominated by sensationalism and news drama
due to the desire to have a wider reader base and gain greater economic success, I believe
that if writers focused more on educating people about issues, and less on money, media
can definitely decrease ignorance and in turn lead to greater peace. In my opinion, the
main adversary to having more peace in society is ignorance towards others. I am
interested in analyzing the medias relationship with this idea of peace and if this tool
can do anything to spread it.
2. JSIS B 269- The Holocaust: History and Memory
Course description: Explores the Holocaust as crucial event of the twentieth century.
Examines the origins of the Holocaust, perpetrators and victims, and efforts to come to
terms with this genocide in Europe, Israel, and the United States.
I am extremely interested in taking this class because I am Jewish and the Holocaust has
obviously had a huge effect on my people, with 6 million innocent victims killed due to
the sheer hate and ignorance of one man. However, the Holocaust did also help to spur
the Zionist movement in Europe, eventually leading to the creation of Israel in 1948. I
want to explore in greater depth this genocide and its role in Israel and the United States,
especially since some people today continue to deny its existence. After the Holocaust,
the world promised never again. Never again would innocent people be killed in a reign
of mass terror. Never again would hate take over. And yet, genocide occurred again in
Rwanda in the 1990s. Today, genocide occurs in Darfur at the hands of a corrupt
government. I want to take this class to better understand the past, in turn trying to help
the effort to ensure that it hopefully will not persist into the future.
3. Philosophy 338- Philosophy of Human Rights
Course description: Theories of human rights and the bearing of these theories on issues
of public policy such as legitimacy of war and terrorism, economic justice, and whether
future generations have rights.
I am interested in possibly pursuing a career related to human rights in the future,
whether that means pursuing journalism, law, or working for a non-profit. Due to this,
philosophy 338 caught my eye while I was scrolling through classes. This course appeals
to me because it explores in further detail what exactly are human rights and if they do
have any legitimacy and backing in society. I am excited to explore this issue through the
perspective of a philosopher, relating these ideas to public policy and future generations
who hopefully will have the rights that all people deserve to have.
