hadlosttheirfactorytotheSovietrevolution.Heattended
WoodrowWilsonHigh
School
andthen
CooperUnionArtSchoolin1946.
Hemethiswifeatthe
openingatanartgalleryin1957.Hernamewas
AdaDelMoro
andtheyhadone
sontogether.Manyofhispaintingwerebasedoffofthepeopleinhislife.His
son,wifeandgrandchildrenallservedasmodelsforhispainting.

RedCoatwascreatedin1984.ItisanoversizedportraitofAlexKatzs
wifeAdaDelMoro.Themediumusedtocreateitwasgraphite,charcoal,and
drypigmentlaidontowovenpaper.
Ichosetodothisartworkbecausethestriking
colorsreallystoodouttome.Iwaslooking
throughanartbookandassoonasIsawthe
pictureIwasimmediatelyattractedtoit.The
pictureissoboldandIthoughtitwouldbefun
torecreateapieceofartworkwithsucha
strikingdesign.
Idecidedtochangethecolorschemeofthe
artwork.TheredinRedCoatisprobablythe
mostimportantaspectofthepictureandby
changingthecolorIchangeitfromRedCoatto
BlueCoat.Ialsoaddedrealbuttonstothecoat
toaddmoredimensiontothepicture.Iusedpagesoutofbooksasherskinto
showthatyoucantjustbasesomeoneonwhattheylooklikebecausethereis
alwaysastorybehindaprettyface.Iwastoldthatitmadeherseemabitcreepy
butIwantedtocreatemoreinterest.Iwantedthefacetorepresentanideaand
maketheviewerthink.IbelieveIaccomplishedthistask.Itriedtomakethe

eyesappearveryrealisticbecauseIwantedtheviewertobeimmediately
attractedtoentrappedbyherbrightblueeyes.Idecidedtomatchtheeyesto
thejacketinsteadofthelipsbecauseIthoughtblueeyeswouldlooknicerthan
bluelipstick.
TocreatemyartpieceIfirstdrewouttheoriginalpictureaswellasIcould
ontoawhitepieceofdrawingpaper.AfterIdrewitoutIusedalighttableto
tracetheoutlineofthefaceandneckonpagesfromabook.Tocreatethe
shadowsseenintheoriginalartworkIuseddarkershadedpagesonthebottom
andcutoutthelighterpieces
tofitontop.IusedPrisma
coloredpencilstodrawthe
eyesinandthenIgluedthe
pagesfromthebookontop.
Ialsousedcoloredpencilto
colorthebackgrounda
darkershadeofblueandto
colorthelipspink.Iusedafinetipmarkertotracetheeyes,nose,andlips.To
createthestreaksofwhiteonherjacketthatareintheoriginalartworkIcolored
overitwithwhitecoloredpencilandlightenedthemarkingsbyerasingthemabit.

Tocreatethejacket,hair,hat,andeyebrowsIusedconstructionpaper.
Theconstructionpaperwastoothickandopaqueformetotraceusingthelight
tablesoIhadtofirsttracethedetailsontoapieceofdrawingpaperusingthe
lighttable,cutthemout,placethecutoutpiecesofdrawingpaperontothe
constructionpaper,tracetheoutlinefromthedrawingpaperontothe
constructionpaperandthencuttheconstructionpaper.Itwasamuchmore
lengthyprocessandoneofthebiggestproblemsIranintowhilerecreatingthis
artpiece.
AlongwiththeproblemwiththeconstructionpaperIalsoencountereda
problemwithhowthepaperswereliningup.Itriedtotracethemallperfectlyto
fittogetherbutitwasinevitablethattherewouldbesomeerrorssoIendedup
havingtocutoffaboutaneighthofaninchoffofthebottombecauseitwasthe
whitepapershowingthrough.Thepagesfromthebooksforthefacedidntline
upperfectlyeitherbecauseIhadtotracetheentirefaceontothreepiecesof
paper.IntheendIlefta
smallspacebetween
twoofthepiecesof
papers.Ibelievethat
theflawsinmyartwork
willcreatemoreinterest

soevenifitdidntturnoutperfectlythewayIwantedtoitmakesitunique.
MyfinishedproductcameoutdifferentlythanwhatIhadimagedbutIstill
thinkitturnedoutwell.Ithinkrecreatedafamousartworkandmadeitinto
somethingthatIcancallmyown.
