Introduction

Who can tell me somethings youve been learning about with location and maps?
What are things we need to include if we draw a map?
B.

Development
Partner up in groups of 5 and get a laptop/ipad and find our school?
How could we find our school?

C.

Consolidation, practice
35 mins
Get in groups, remembering that you need to work as a team, so find a group you can work
well with.
Youre going on a treasure hunt to find areas closest to our school
When you find the area you are going to write the name of the street that it is on, on your
worksheet.
Find and draw 6 symbols that are used in the map and write what they mean
Extension: Write directions from those locations to the school, using direction words and street
names.
Enabling: Find and draw 4 symbols that are used in the map and write what they mean.

D.

Closure
Discuss the places we have found and the meaning of the symbols.

Post-lesson review and evaluation:


Student achievement:
The students worked well, although they tried to search the places using the google maps tool bar.
They were quickly stopped and told to get back on task. I believe the task challenged some students
and extended others, as they searched for their places. The students did not complete the worksheet.
Teaching effectiveness:
I was anxious at the start of this lesson as I was teaching 43 students with 3 other teachers present.
Despite this I believe I spoke clearly and allowed students to explore google earth/maps in a safe
environment where the task would challenge the students to find various places. Although students
did not complete the whole worksheet I believe the task was appropriate and allowed students to
develop further knowledge of their surrounding community.
