PREFACE WARRANTY The C-39 is warranted to the buyer against defects in materials and/or workmanship for a period of one (1) year from date of shipment to buyer from Thermo Cahn or authorized Thermo Gahn dealer. The ‘enclosed warranty card must be returned to Thermo Cahn at the time of receipt of this product to establish the warranty. Defects and/or damage arising from normal wear and tear, accident, neglect, abuse, tampering, damaging environment, or operation in a manner not prescribed by Thermo Cahn are not covered by this warranty. In addition, all repairs and replacement paris which are accomplished or provided by Thermo Cahn during the aforesaid warranty period are warranted to the extent set forth above for an additional six (6) month period from the date of reshipment by Thermo Cahn to the customer or the balance of the original warranty whichever is greater. {In no event shail Thermo Cahn be liable for special or consequential damages, loss or expense rising Out of or in connection with the use or inability to use this product. INSTRUCTION MANUAL, This is the operator's instruction manual for the C-33. It has been written with several objectives: 4. To show you how to operate the balance. 2. To convey the experiences which we and other Thermo Cahn users have developed over the years, 3. To advise you on the care and treatment of the C-33, The manual is organized into six sections. Sections 1, 2 and 3 cover installation and operation of the balance. Please read these sections before attempting any weighing in order to prevent damage and to reduce set up time. Pay particular attention to the Operation Section. Sections 4 and 6 cover maintenance and reference material. Section 5 explains the interface into computer. This manual does not describe operations with Thermo Cahn accessories or for any particular application. Remove the shipping frames fram the ends of the balance, then remove the plastic shipping cover. Remove the remi 1g items (Accessory Case, Instruction Manual and Power Cord) from the carton. Check all items against the above Packing Check List. Remove any damage to your carrier. Report any missing parts to your Thermo. Orion representative. Save the packing material in case you need to reship the balance. No special procedures are required during unpacking, other than careful handling. After unpacking the balance, do not proceed further until you have read Section | Installation READ THIS MANUAL BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO OPERATE BALANCE, (P02 Thermo Cahn 6-3 Instruction Manual SECTION 1 INSTALLATION ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS ‘The C-33 may be used in almost any location. It does not require leveling. However, the level should not change after zeroing. Try to avoid exceptionally shaky tables, direct sunlight or drafty locations (such as near air conditioners), For ultimate microweighing, avoid locations near equipment which generates vibrations such as vacuum pumps, air concitioners or heavy machinery. The C-39 is designed for operation between 15 and 30 degrees C and a relative humidity between 5% and 95% (non-condensing). Ifyou need to operate the balance above or below these set temperatures, contact the Thermo Orion service department. EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY ‘The C-33 balance accessory kit includes an external power supply. This power system assures that no heat from the power supply reaches the weighing chamber. The power supply will automatically adapt to any input voltage from 85 to 270 volts and to any frequency from 47 to 63 Hz. If any electrical over-toad. cours, the power supply will shut down. Since the power supply will automatically reset when the over- load Is removed, no fuses are needed. ‘To install the external power supply, plug the white connection cable (see Fig. 1) into the round Connactor on the back of the balance. Plug the black power cord into the back of the power supply. (See Page 7). WEIGHT DISPLAY The value of the weight on the sample pan is shown in milligrams on the Weight Display. Since the balance will give either positive or negative weights within the selected range, the Weight Display shows “plus” or “minus sign. When the weight exceeds the weighing range, "PPPPPP* will be shown. If the calibrating weight Is not in the calibration range of the balance, “ES* will appear. 'P.05 Thermo Caha C53 instruction Manual SECTION 3 OPERATION This section will give details of the operation of the C-33 microbalance. It is advisable to read this, section carefully at least once with the instrument, and then to make reference to it as necessary. Various weighing procedures will be described in detail. You should be quite familiar with the controls as described in Section 2 before proceeding further with this section. It has been assumed that you have no Previous experience with the C-33. As you become more familiar with the balance, the operating Procedures will become routine, PRECAUTIONS ‘Always use forceps to handle pans, stirrups and weights. To avoid contamination do not handle them with your fingers. Dip or swab the accessories in ammonia to clean them when necessary. Do not grasp the stirrups with the forceps. Litt them from below the yoke, as shown in the Figure 4 below. tis easy to exert excessive force on the hangdowns and beams if the stirrups are held too tightly. Figure 4: Handling the Stirrups ‘Two types of weights are supplied with the C-33: Calibration and tare weights. It is important to keep the {wo types separated. For more information about weights and the various classes, refer to the Weights section on Page 15. The non-magnetic, stainless steel forceps supplied with the balance have been found preferable to the ‘common plastic tipped forceps. The Thermo Cahn type of forceps are specified by the National Bureau of Standards for the handling of small sheet metal weights. Plastic forceps are not recommended because they can hold a static charge which can be transferred to the weight or sample, producing erroneous readings. Also, do not use metal forceps with serrated tips which can seratch the weights. Gare should be taken when working in the weighing chamber. The weighing hangdown is fragile and if damaged, the balance must be retumed to Thermo Gahn for repair. ‘The weighing chamber window must be closed when zeroing, calibrating or weighing. When the balance is not in use, the chamber should be closed to reduce the possibilty of contamination or damage. p08 Thermo Cahn 6-33 Instruction Manual TURNING ON BALANCE Tum on the balance with the switch on the rear panel. The Weight Display will show +8.8.8.8.8.8 indicating that the balance has been initialized. In this state, all previous calibration and calibration points have been lost. Also, all segments of the Display are lit allowing you to check that they are all working. After 5 to 10 seconds, press TARE to zero the display and set the balance into the operating mode. WARM UP For precision weighing, adequate warm up is required. Normally, a minimum of one hour of warm up time is necessary to avoid frequent rezeroing and recalibrating. A minimum of two hours of warm up should be allowed to achieve ultimate precision and stability. We recommend that the power stay on overnight and weekends. However, do not use the dust cover while the balance power is ON. Anew unit should be allowed 24 hours of “burn in” time before any serious measurements are attempted. PAN SELECTION The #9359 stirrups are for general weighing. A wide variety of other stirrups and sample containers, as shown in the Product Notes at the back of this manual, are available from Thermo Cahn. CALIBRATION A200 mg Calibration Weight is supplied for calibration. For information concerning this weight, refer to the Weights section on page 15. 1. Zero the balance by pressing the Tare button when the reading is stable. 2, Place the Calibration Weight on the sample pan. 3. When the Weight Display has stabilized, push the CAL button once. The value of the Calibration Weight will appear on the Display. if “ES” appears in the Display, your Calibration Weight does not match your Weighing Range. 4, Remove the Calibration Weight from the sample pan and return it to its container. You may now tare and make normal weighings. CALIBRATION SCROLLING ‘The calibration program has @ scrolling function, with a range of 199.850 mg to 200.150 mg, This feature allows you to use a calibration weight with an actual callbration value different from the preset value. ‘The procedure below describes the use of scrolling. Press TARE to zero the balance. Place your exact Calibration Weight on the sample pan. Press the CAL button and 200.000 will appear. Press the CAL button again and keep it depressed. The digital display will start counting up from 200.000. The longer you depress the CAL button the faster the count will increase. To avoid overshooting the value of your exact weight, release the button about 10 micrograms before the desired number is reached, The display will increase to 200.150 then reset Itself to 199.850 and start increasing from this value. Press the CAL repeatedly as you slowly approach the value of your exact weight. The balance will retain the new calibration vaiue and will use the new value each time the CAL button is pressed. PEN Nee NOTE: If power is interrupted, the calibration value will revert back to 200.000 when CAL is pressed. p07 Therme Cahn C-33 Instruction Manual ELECTRICAL TARING The C-33 has an electronic tare of 250 mg. When using this range, an “E” indicating over-range will ‘appear on the display when you place a weight a total load of over 250 mg on the sample pan, Just press the TARE button and the display will return to zero. ELECTROSTATIC CHARGES An electrostatic charge (‘static") will prevent a microbalance from being used to its full potential. Common symptoms of this problem include noisy readout, crit and sudden readout shifts. The most common source of static is dry weather and the handling or touching of non-conductive surfaces. There are steps you can take to avoid and eliminate static problems. Technical Note “Static Control for Balances" contains ‘more detailed information about static and how to minimize its effects and is available upon request. Placing a radioactive ionizing unit (Thermo Cahn #1269) in the weighing chamber works well to remove static charge from the balance surfaces and samples. Coating the inside of the weighing chamber window with anti-static solution (Thermo Cahn #2027) also helps to eliminate and prevent static. RELOCATING THE BALANCE The C-38 may be moved easily from one location to another. For shart relocations (within a building), simply unplug the balance and carry it by the handle to the new location. You do not have to remove the stirrup from the hangdown loop. If you are going to transport the balance in a car, remove the stirrup first. You do not have to secure the hangdown loop with a thread unless there is a chance that the balance will be turned upside down. If the balance is inverted, the hangdown loop may slip into the balance motor chamber if the loop is not first secured. P:08 Thermo Cahn C33 Instruction Manual SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE DAILY CARE No special daily maintenance is required for the C-33 balance. It can be left in the power ON condition unless the balance will not be used for several weeks or longer. Immediately clean all spilled material. Wipe it up only with lintless paper cloth. IMPORTANT: Whenever it becomes necessary to work in the welghing compartment to remove accidentally dropped samples, etc., you should first remove the stirrups and sample pans from the hangdowns. This will avoid inadvertant damage to the stirrup or hangdown. FACTORY REPAIRS Should it become necessary to return the Instrument to us for repairs, follow the instruction befow for repacking. Remove all items including power cord, stirrups, pans, loose weights, etc. Do not return these items to us. We need only the balance to effect repairs. To avoid damaging the hangdown, it should be secured before shipment. THE HANGDOWN IS DELICATE, SO USE THE UTMOST CARE (See the Figure 5). Thread and small strips of masking tape are recommended. Cut approximately 7” of nyion thread. Loop the thread through the diamond shaped hangdown loop and loosely secure both ends of thread to the bottom of the weighing chamber with masking tape, Figure §: Securing the Hangdowns Place a protective piece of corrugated cardboard over the weighing chamber window above the window tab to protect the glass against shacks in transit. It should overlap the sides and top of the window. Tape in place with masking tape. Repack the balance in its original packing container or, if itis not available, wrap the balance in several inches of “bubble pack” before placing it in a packing carton filled with resilient packing material. A small amount of time spent on proper packing can save considerable expense on repairs due to shipping damage.

If the balance cannot respond to this command, the program will lock, If this should occur, enter “BREAK”. If another attempt to read the weight fails, there is a problem with your interface. Line 160 enters the weight reading into variable AS. Lines 170 and 180 look at the status character to assure that the weight reading is stable. Lines 190 and 200 strip off the comma and status character from the weight reading. Line 210 transforms the weight reading from a string variable to @ numeric variable in order to do. numerical computation. Line 250 contains a “CLOSE" command to close the buffer and port before finding the average weight. The above program and notes are not intended to be a complete course on how to program your computer for RS-232. However, if you have a passing understanding of BASIC programming, writing your own program to access the FS-232 feature should not be dificult. ‘A data acquisition program for the Epson HX-20 is available from Thermo Orion upon request. CAPACITY of the sample suspension is defined as the maximum total load (sample, container, wire, etc.) that can be suspended from the sample oop. As the load increases beyond the rated capacity, the following will occur in the order shown: The beam will slightly bend which will reduce repeatability. ‘The motor coll will sag into its stops, causing it to become inoperable but preventing damage. The hangdown {oop will break preventing serious damage to the beam. REPEATABILITY (or Precision) is defined by Thermo Orion as the standard deviation of 10 consecutive weighings of the same mass under ideal conditions. READABILITY is the least significant digit which can be resolved trom the readout under normal conditions and set up. SENSITIVITY is the smallest mass difference that can be detected by the balance. PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION Capacity 250 mg Weight range/sensitivity 200 mg/t.0 ug Tare: Electrical 250 mg Accuracy (limited by precision) 2.ug Precision Uttimate 1.0ug Fraction of load 001% WEIGHTS A Class 1.1 (formerly Class M) 200 mg Calibrating Weight is supplied with the C-3 balance. It is the most accurate weight available with a tolerance of 0.005 mg. A wide variety of Class 1.1 weights are available from Thermo Cahn as well as a weight box to protect them. Always return these weights to their containers after use. Do not touch them with your fingers or contaiminated forceps. Class 1.1 weights can be identified by thelr mirror finish. MAINTAINING CALIBRATION STANDARD For the most effective calibration control over a long period of time, we recommend the use of two calibration weights. The first weight is used as a “primary” weight and is kept locked in a secure place. Once every six months, or at any time when the working calibration weight is in doubt, the primary ‘weight is used to calibrate the balance. Then the working calibration weight is measured. For routine calibration of the balance, the working calibration weight is used by setting its measured value into the balance (see Calibration Scrolling on page 7). With careful handling of the primary weight, consistent calibration can be maintained over a period of many years.
