Expert systems and case-based reasoning are examples of this class of
knowledge management systems.
Expert systems are used to provide expert judgments based on the
available facts.
Decision support systems generally aim to help a manager come to a
decision by providing information, whereas expert systems go one step
further by rst gathering information and then providing a considered
answer.
Many expert systems are also able to explain how they have reached
particular conclusions.
Expert systems apply the (tacit) knowledge or expertise of one or more
experts(previous experts) so as to reach decisions or make suggestions.
Expert systems are widely used to detect fraudulent insurance claims,
to identify potential customers for new business, and even to help
interpret legislation.
