DuringmytimeatthePublicPolicydepartmentatDePaulUniversityattheir
undergraduateresearchoperations,Ihavegainedabetterunderstandingtotheimportance
oftheirworkatDePaulUniversity.FoundedbyVincentiansin1898DePaulwasbased
ontheVincentianvaluesastaughtbySaintVincentDePaul.Theuniversityhasgrown
significantlysinceitsfounding,itisnowthe13thlargestuniversityforenrollmentwith
16,000undergraduatestudentsand7,600graduatestudents.DePaulintroducedPublic
Policystudiesasamajorduringthe19971998academicschoolyearandnowhasover
100studentsinthedepartment.Theuniversityoffersmanywaysforstudentstobe
involvedwithresearchintheirdesiredmajor.TheyoffertheSummerUndergraduate
ResearchGrant(SURG),theUndergraduateResearchAssistantProgram(URAP),as
wellasresourcesforstudentstoreachtooutsidegrantprogramstogetfundingforthe
research.TheURAPwasanalyzedforthepurposeofthismemorandum.TheURAPgets
mostfundingfromgrantsthatprofessorsapplyto,inordertoconducttheirresearchatthe
university.Thedepartmentasawholeismadeupof5professors,allwithPh.D.sin
PublicPolicyStudies.Moststudentswhoworkwithresearchopportunitiesinthismajor
workoneononewithaprofessorwhoisconductingtheresearchandseeksouta
promisingstudenttoassistthem.ThewaysinwhichDePaulUniversityhasmadeiteasy
forstudentstogetinvolvedwiththeirfieldofstudy,especiallyinresearchtofurther
developtheirunderstandingofthefieldstudentswanttoworkin.
WiththeresearchoperationsinsidethePublicPolicydepartmentasapartofahuge
operationunderDePaulUniversity,theresearchfacilityworkseffectivelyasteaching
studentstheknowledgeandtechnicalskillsthefieldofPublicPolicyrequiresofsomeone
enteringtheworkforce.Itistrulyimpeccablehowtheclassesthatsomeonetakesasa
majororminorinPublicPolicycantransfertheirknowledgetheygainedfromtheclass
totheapplicationoftheirresearchwithinthedepartment.Whileitisveryimpressivethat
almostallstudentshaveopportunityunderthismajortodoresearchwiththeirfield,the
sizeofthedepartmentcouldbeimprovedupontoallowotherstoknowoftheeasyaccess

thereistobeapartofaresearchassistantopportunity.Furthermoreitshouldbesaidthat
anotherimprovementcouldbeputtingtheinformationoutforotherDePaulstudentsto
understandwhatitisPublicPolicydoesandwhyitisimportantthatwehaveit.
Asmostpeoplewouldsay,whyshouldthereberesearchespeciallyinafieldthatnot
manypeoplefullyunderstand?AsAdrianGibbsdiscusses,Researchbyuniversities
remainsaprimesourceofknowledgeandinnovation.(Gibbs,2009).Theknowledge
thatisgainedfromdiscoveringnewpossibilitiesinthelargescopeofthePublicPolicy
fieldiswhatinnovatesandfurtherallowsforgrowthwithinthefieldtomake
improvementonasocialsciencebasedfield.Asgreatasthestrengthsofthisresearch
facilityisunderthePublicPolicydepartment,improvementsshouldstillbemadeuponto
showcasehowgreatthefieldofresearchisandtheinnovationthatistakingplaceat
DePaulUniversity.
Foranygreatbusinesstosucceeditneedstobemarketedandshowcasedtoitspotential
audience.AsAsllaniandFejzasay,Marketing is one of the main
departments within an organization and its duty is to identify customer
needs and wants and to produce or modify products in attempt to
respond to market demand.(Asllani,Fejza2013).
ItisimperativethatPublicPolicyanditsresearchopportunitiesthatithashereatDePaul
ismarketedwellsomorepeoplecangetinvolvedwithanamazingevergrowingfield.
Thefieldcanfail,justasasmallbusinesswithoutanymarketingtoshowcasetopotential
newclients,orstudentsinthiscase.
EventhoughthedepartmentofPublicPolicyatDePaulUniversityitoneofthesmallest
majorsandtheirresearchthattheydoisrelativelyunknowntotherestoftheuniversity,
theyhavemadehugeadvancementsintheirfieldofworkthatisbenefitingthefield.With
dedicatedprofessors,promisingstudents,andasmallercohesivecommunityof
passionatepeopleworkingforadvancementinPublicPolicytheywillsucceedgreatlyin
whattheywilldoandwillcontinuetodevelopintoabiggerandstrongerareaofstudy
availabletoprospectivestudentsatDePaulUniversity.
