Introduction
Providethehistoryorcontextofthetopicandthereasonwhytheproposalis
beingmade(problems,issues,causes).Itisoftenusefultoincludesomedata.
Itisonallofustorejectthequiettoleranceofsexualassaultandtorefusetoaccept
whatsunacceptable,saidPresidentObamarecentlyinregardstoissuesofsexualassaulton
collegecampuseswhichhasbecomeaprominentissuealloverthecountry(Somanader).Sexual
assault,however,doesnotonlyhappenoncollegecampus,butinmiddleandhighschool
communitiesaswell.Itseemsthatthisseriousissueisnotnoticedordiscussedtothesame
extentregardingmiddleandhighschoolsthanitisregardingcolleges,andtheissuecontinuesto
exist.AccordingtoClaireGordon,awriterforAljazeeraAmerica,aninternationalnewssource,
58%of7th12thgradersexperiencesexualharassmentand1in5saystheyhavebeen
sexuallyassaultedinschool(Gordon).Justastherehasbeenapushtoensuresafetyoncollege
campusesinregardstosexualassault,middleandhighschoolstudentsneedthesameeducation
andassurance,astheyarealsoatriskofsexualassault.
Desiredoutcomes
Statethedesiredeffectsofanychangethatwillhappen.Dataisoften
valuableinthissection.
Anincreaseineducationaboutsexualassaultonmiddleandhighschoolcampuseswill
createanunderstandingthatthisissue,generallydisregardedasajustacollegeissue,existsin
theseplaces,aswell.Wearehopingtocreatingagreaterawarenessaboutthisissueinour
community.Greaterawarenessmaynotseeanimmediateimpactindecreasingsexualassault
occurrences,butwillforcestudentstorealizethatsexualviolenceisnotjustacollegeissue.
LauraDunn,executivedirectorofSurvJustice,anorganizationthatlegallysupportssexual
assaultsurvivors,describedthegoalofourprojectwhenshesaid,weneedtobeeducating
youngmenandwomenaboutawarenessfirstandforemost,becauseitisalittletoolateatthe
collegelevel(Sneed).Because44%ofsexualassaultvictimsareundertheageof18,weare
hopingtofindawaytoreducetheriskbycreatinganawarenessofwaystokeeponeselfsafe
(RAINN).
ProposalOptions
Whatoptionswereconsidered.Thissectioncanincludeprosandconsto
eachofthoseoptions.
Threepossiblesolutionswereexploredinraisinginawarenessabouttheissueofsexual
violenceintheNeedhamcommunity.First,weexploredcreatingtwodifferentpamphlets,one
thatcouldbegiventostudentsonconcludingtheirsenioryear,andonetogivetoparents,as
theirchildrenaregraduatingfromhighschoolandheadingofftocollege.Thesepamphlets

wouldbebeneficialinthattheywouldprovidestudentsandparentswithvaluableresourcesthat
couldbeusedthroughoutthestudent'stransitiontocollege.Itwouldexploredifferentstatistics,
waystostaysafe,andresourcesthatwouldensuresafetybeforeorafterasexualassault.
However,theissuewiththepamphletisthatitonlyprovidesawarenessandpreparesstudentsfor
theriskofsexualassaultthatexistsinthecollegesetting,ratherthanwhatalsoexistsinmiddle
andhighschool.Ourmainfocusistoprovideeducationandawarenessthroughouthighschool
asameansofchangingthecultureandoutlookregardingsexualviolencethroughoutalifetime
ratherthanjustincollege.
Anotherpossiblesolutionthatwasdiscussedwascreatingapanelorspeakerassembly
forjuniorsand/orseniorsthatwouldaddressdifferentaspectsofsexualassaultinbothhigh
schoolandcollegesettings.Thisassemblywouldgivestudentsareallifeperspectivefrom
collegestudentsandsexualviolenceprofessionals.However,thisassemblywouldbeaonetime
occurrence,whichmakesitveryeasyforstudentstonotpayattentionornotattendtheassembly.
Wearehopingtofindawaythatcouldimpactallofthestudentsinourcommunitybeginningat
freshmanyear.
Thelastoptionthatwasconsideredisimplementingasexualviolencecurriculumintothe
NeedhamHighSchoolwellnesscurriculum.Bydoingso,wewouldhopetobetterprepare
studentsforsuchexperienceswithgreaterknowledgeandawarenessaboutsexualassaultand
consentbeforeleavinghighschool.Wewouldhopetoaddsomeaspectofthiscurriculuminto
eachyearofwellness,sothatstudentsunderstandthatthisisnotjustanissueforseniorswhoare
goingtocollege,butallhighschoolstudents.
Proposal
Statethefinaloptionthatisbeingproposed
Wewouldliketocreateasexualassaultbasedcurriculumtobeincorporatedintothe
juniorandseniorwellnessclasscurriculumsatNeedhamHighSchool.Wefeelitwouldbe
highlybeneficialtoeducatestudentsatthehighschoolabouttherelevantissuesrelatedtosexual
assaultthroughadevelopedcurriculum.NeedhamHighalreadyprovideswellnessclasseseach
yearforallgradesthathavecreatedamoreeducatedandawarestudentbody,buttheissueof
sexualassaultisprevalentandnottouchedupontotheextenttowhichwewouldhopeitwould.
Planofaction
Howwilltheproposalbeachieved?Statethenatureandmethodtothechanges.
Providealltheactionstepsandatimelineforthem.
ThegroupwillbecorrespondingwithMr.Hopkinsinordertoresearchandcreatea
sexualassaultcurriculumforthejunioryearwellnesscurriculum.Wewillfirstbedoingresearch
toexplorewhatiscurrentlyinplaceinthiscurriculum,andthecurriculumsfortheotherthree
grades,andwhatkindofinformationismissing.Oncewedeterminewhatkindofinformation
andresourcesneedstobeaddedtothecurriculum,wewilldraftacurriculumwithMr.Hopkins
topresenttoDr.Pinkham.
RequiredResources
Whatwillbenecessarytocompletetheactionplan?

Thetwothingsthatwewillneedinordertocompletetheactionplanistimeinorderto
meetandworkwithMr.HopkinsandDr.Pinkhamtoresearch,write,andfinalizethecurriculum
andtwo,resourcesregardingthecurrentcurriculumsinplaceatNeedhamHighSchooland
informationthatshouldbeincludedinasexualviolenceawarenesscurriculum.
Benefits(and/orLimitations)
Statewhatmakesthisproposalgreat.Showcasetheeffectsof
thechanges.Besuretostatewhyitwillworkandwhatmakesitviable.Thiscanreiteratethe
desiredoutcomesandhighlighthowthisspecificplanmeetsthosegoals.Itisoftenhelpfultouse
comparisonstoother,similaractionsandchangesthathaveoccurred.Anydatathatcansupport
thisareashouldagainbeprovided.Itisoftenvaluabletonoteanylimitations,undesired
outcomes,andotherissuesthatmayresultsfromtheplanandhowtheplanwilladdressthose
things.
Benefits
Educatingthejuniorandseniorstudentbodiesonthissubjectwouldbebeneficialinthe
developmentofselfconsciousandcommunalconsciousyoungadults.Sexualassaultrelated
topicsarerelevantandcallforattentionanddiscussion.ToquoteLauraDunn,executivedirector

Weneedtobeeducatingyoungmenandwomenaboutawarenessfirstand
foremost,becauseitisalittletoolateatthecollegelevel(Sneed).Addingtoanalready
comprehensivecurriculumwilldeepenthedepthatwhichthewellnessdepartmentalreadydives
intoissuessurroundingemotional,spiritual,social,mental,andphysicalwellbeing.
Limitations

Tocarryouttheproposedidea,spaceinthewellnesscurriculumisneeded.Therewouldneedto
beadesignatedtimeduringtheseniorandjunioryearwellnesscourseswhenthisnew
curriculumcouldbediscussed.Afinalizedversionofthiscurriculumwouldneedtobewritten
andapprovedsothatitincludesenoughinformationtoproperlyeducate,yetdoesnttaketoo
longatimetoteach.Thereisalsothepossibilitythatthecurriculumwillnotbewellreceivedby
thestudentsitispresentedto,however,thisisalimitationthatcannotbecombattedorimproved
uponuntiltheabsorptionofmaterialisobservedfirsthand.Thehopewouldbethatwiththis
newinstallationofinformationstudentswilltakeawaytheconceptsexpressedinapositiveway
andbecomemoreaware.Pastunitsofstudyinwellnessclasseshaveprovedeffectiveandthis
additionshouldonlycomplimentandstrengthenthoseunits.

majorbenefits(effects).
WeareinterestedinimplementingachangeinthewellnesscurriculumatNeedhamHigh
Schoolbycreatingasexualassaultcurriculum.Thischangeisbasedonthe
obsceneamountof
harassmentandviolencethatoccursinmiddleschool,highschool,andcollegecommunitiesin
todayssociety.WehopehelpinchangingthesehighstatisticsbybettereducatingNeedham
highschoolstudentsaboutthisrelevantissuethatfacesoursociety.Addinginasexualassault
curriculumatNeedhamHighSchoolwouldprovidestudentswithanecessaryunderstandingthat

willcreateanawarenessregardingtheissueofsexualviolenceinourcommunity.

initiallyhowhisworkinMansfield(whichisacatholicaffiliatedschool)wasverydifferentfrom
whatishappeninginNeedham.Howeverhealsostatedthateventhoughthetwoschoolsare
different,neitherarecompletelyperfect.Ourtalkwithhimhelpedusinrealizingthattherewere
previousshiftshappening,buttherecanalwaysbemoretoaddtowardstheschoolinregardsto
thistopic.Wealsolearnedalotfromhimaboutwhatgenderroles,lgbtqandothertopicsthatwe
mightwanttobranchoutoninourproject.
MeetingwithMr.Dungca:
Mr.DungcaisawellnessteacheratNeedhamHighSchool.Inourdiscussionswithhimhe
expressedhisapprovalwiththecurrentNHScurriculumandtheapproachtakentoexpress
concepts.Mr.DungcatookaparticularinterestinthewayNHSwasopentotalkingaboutthe
LGBTQcommunityandholdingindepthclassdiscussionsthatwerewellreceived.Hewas
anothervoiceatNHSthataffirmedforusthatthestudentbodywouldhandlenewmaterialwith
respectandattentiveness,thusmakinganadditiontothecurriculummorefeasible.
