Introduction
At an astounding rapid increase in technology has taken place over the
last decade, it is only inevitable that individuals will need the
knowledge, support and mentoring from those that have a clear vision
of this escapade. As a motivated and determined individual, I believe
that support from one human to another is the key to overall success.
So the question at thought is who are the people we turn to when in
need? An executive coach, a person who invests their time within an
organization to help the CEO or manager with the triumphs and
pressures of everyday business matters, work and lifestyle balance
and overall commodities. This essay aims to educate and inform the
reader of the importance of an executive coach now and in the future,
what exactly is their title or position, their relevance in the app-based
world that we are heading into, the reason why future tech companies
will need to invest in an executive coach and my personal ambition to
progress and attain the credentials of being called one.

Evolution of an Executive Coaches

Around a decade ago, most companies engaged a business coach to
help with simple situations within the organization that would
otherwise be dealt with by anyone of an authoritative position. They
inquired minor roles and duties that mainly consisted of training
employees or giving some form of input on practical issues. Today
however, an executive coach is seen as an important figure within any
profitable organization.

Body of essay
The Importance of an Executive coach
As I am approaching my final semester of my bachelors degree in
Information Technology majoring in system services, I have had to
consider my future career job aspects. To become an executive coach
was never my initial intention. It formulated in through my early years
of Information Technology courses where I took an interest in learning
about the IT industry and where its heading. To keep the profession
dynamic and relevant it will be critical to address current and future
challenges with an understanding of where coaching stands in the
lineage of business and other interventions. (Maher & Pomerantz,
2003). So forth, I believe that as society transitions into an app-based
world with new technologies arising in almost every corner, there will
be a higher demand for tech companies to keep up with their
competitors in the share market. In order to accomplish that, the CEO
needs to have a clear vision of where the IT industry is going and how
to maintain a status of greatness. A goal and aspiration of mine would
be to take my knowledge from my bachelors degree in IT Engineering
3

and further my studies to become an executive coach for an IT or

Engineering based company. It would not only work in my favor but it
would be the fine line (niche) between someone applying for the same
position as me in the IT organization but they have no background or
experience.
Referring to my career action plan I stated my future career goal would
be an executive coach for a high ranking organization where I would
work for a few years in that field before taking a step further and
becoming an inspirational executive coaching mentor and guide for
other people, who want to excel and achieve greater success in their
lifestyles. By helping others bring out their true potential would be the
epitome of my satisfaction. Bill Campbell an inspiration and role model
has had many successes as an executive coach to legendary CEOs
such as Jeff Bezos, Larry Page and Steve Jobs. In a recent post
Campbell discusses how he coaches tech company founders to great
success and endorses the role of a mentor; is to be part of the
solution. Campbell raises some interesting points about being a coach,
for example in a typical session, he runs through a series of questions:
What are we trying to fix? What can we do? How much of it is people?
How much of it is technology? How much of it is process? These
questions assimilate with his methodology that involves a comfortable
and open relationship with the mentee and an ongoing dialogue about
self-development. (Komisar, 2016) I strongly agree with Campbells
advice as he is well renowned for his contributions as an executive
coach for well-known CEOs. As an IT student I have gone through
countless hours of research and have finally found an icon to adhere to
for career goals.

Relevance in an app-based world

In order to become an executive coach a minimum requirement is a
bachelors degree alongside the skills, qualifications and experience
that are needed to make it a reality. The skills required are being able
to work as a team member or in any position, critical thinking, have an
open mind on personal thoughts and other peoples opinions, and
being able to communicate with people of different backgrounds and
diverse intellectual knowledge. According to the IECL, executive
coaching is a collaborative, strength-oriented and structured
conversation with measurable outcomes that supports a person to
achieve their goals, usually via thinking differently, skills development,
improved performance and productivity or increased wellbeing
(Raymond & Mathers, 2013).
My steps taken to turn this aspirational goal into a reality has been an
ongoing pursuit. After recently completing a Diploma of Information
Technology and Certificate IV in Business and Retail Operations I have
built up the employability skills desirable to be an executive coach.
Alongside my studies I work in retail and have taken on the roles of
4

team member, assistant manager, manager and regional manager

allowing me to be able to work well with people, have time
management and be able to lead and mentor people throughout my
time in the workforce. I have just started my own business (Tutoring
Centre) which has allowed me to use the business skills I have learnt
over my years through experience in the work force. This will now lead
me to finding the potential in others which is my goal towards my ideal
future career. By providing both facilitated and experiential education
for executives and managers, it greatly enhances members
management and leadership skills and improves their career
trajectory. (Executive coaching, 2015). So forth, with the transition
into an app-based world, it will be an essential for tech based
companies to invest their time and money in hiring an executive
coach. The reason being, the share market is a competitive place and
for companies to remain competitive they will need to have the best
and most popular pieces of technology supported by proficient
stakeholders, managers and employees who are the backbone of a
successful organization.

Why future tech companies will need to invest

Nowadays technology is accelerating faster than people can adapt or
even comprehend. Schools are now integrating technology into the
curriculum, offering courses such as web design, coding and
multimedia etc. With implementation of mobile technology into
classrooms, traditional passive learning becomes timeworn. Learning
through projects while equipped with technology tools allows students
to be intellectually challenged while providing them with a realistic
snapshot of what the modern office looks like. (Edutopia, 2008).
Therefore, taking this into account I have introduced IT courses into
my tuition business for all ages. The younger generation will need to
be prepared for the real app-based world environment. On the same
token, providing the same mentoring and coaching facilities to the
older baby boomers and generation X is just as important. The
changeover from passive learning to advanced technology can bring
fear and unease to the older not so tech-savvy generation, what may
be a simple push of a button to us, may be a struggle for them.
Moreover, ensuring that everyone within the workforce including job
seekers attain the appropriate training is vital as this could potentially
lead to a higher increase in unemployment over a simple issue such as
people not being tech-minded enough and are unable to keep up as
technology keeps evolving at an inexorable speed.

Goals and Ambitions

My goal is to mentor, coach and educate people of all ages about the
importance of technology within everyday lives and how it is seen
everywhere from robotics to medicine, teaching, house hold
5

appliances and gadgets and how it plays such a vital role in almost
everything we do. Through workshops, mentor programs, motivational
speeches and hands-on experience as a tutor/coach in my tuition
business I hope to inspire people about the exciting future of
technology and discard the fear of not being able to understand and
apply technology to their lives, by giving people the confidence and
providing support and trained help to not only show them how to use
technology but how to apply it to everything they do. By taking on this
task, I hope to gain the acquired skills and knowledge needed to be
recognized as someone who has the potential to be an awe-inspiring
coach. In relation to my personal goals to work within a high-ranking
organization and predict the job prospects 5 to 10 years from now, I
had to look at successful organizations such as Apple, IBM, and Optus
etc. and find out the relevance of an executive coach within the
industry. Sometime ago coaching was once viewed by many as a tool
to help correct underperformance and nothing more, today it is
becoming much more widely used in supporting top producers. In
actual fact, a survey was conducted in 2004 by Right Management
Consultants (Philadelphia), where astonishingly 86 percent of
companies said they used executive coaching to sharpen the skills of
individuals who have been identified as future organizational leaders.
(Michelman, 2005).Therefore, I can comfortably say that there is a
necessity and importance for executive coaches as they have
developed overtime the skills and knowledge needed to support a
person/CEO to achieve their goals, usually via thinking differently and
helping the mentee understand societys needs, their wants and
applying that to a form of innovative technology that people will be
able to easily adapt to and learn.

Conclusion
I predict that executive coaching will be imperative within majority if
not all small to large companies especially focusing on tech based
organizations. As stated that its relevance is due to the substantial
amount of innovative technologies that require a structured support
network from all employees and stakeholders within the business, as it
works both ways with people who require the knowledge to use these
futuristic inventions by corrective mentoring and training which will
allow for companies to be successful. As I envision my future 5 to 10
years from now, I already see myself achieving some of these goals
and aspirations to gain the credentials and experience of an executive
coach. By opening up my own Tuition Centre last month; that focuses
on mentoring, educating and preparing students for the future
alongside completing my undergraduates degree in IT end of the year
I can strongly say that my ideal future career plan is falling into place
and has a lot of prospects in the future. As an ambitious, motivated
and determined individual I cannot wait to put my feet on the ground
6

and make a stand for by beliefs about educating inspiring and

motivating others to help achieve the best version of themselves and
their work balance lifestyles.
