parents.ThelackofeducationhasplaguedAfricaforyearsbyover40millionchildren
inAfricanotattendingschool.Howeverthisproblemcanbesolvedbytheimproving
schoolcondition,helpfromtheEducationForAll(EFA),andlettingallchildrennomatter
raceorgendergotoschool.
Africahasthelowestenrollmentratiosofanyregionoftheworldatbothprimaryand
secondarylevels(Lewis23).37%oftheoutofschoolyouthintheworldareinAfrica(Lewis
23).Africaisstrugglingbecauseofthelackofextramoneytheyhavetospendoneducation.On
average,achildinAfricacanexpectonly0.3yearsofpreprimaryschooling(Lewis23).So
thereforenotalotofkidsinAfricaevengetaneducationandarenotverysmart.Africas
educationsystemisverydifferentfromothercountriesandtheyneedhelp.
ItsunfathomablethatofAfricasnearly128millionschoolagedchildren,seventeen
millionwillneverattendschool

literacycanopentheworldandhelppeoplereachtheirpotential.Africanchildrenare

normallynotgiventhesameopportunitiesaskidsaroundtheworld(Lewis25).That
meansmostofthekidsinAfricadonotgetachancetoreachtheirfullpotential(Lewis
18).KidsinAmericaandothercountriesthatprovideschoolforeveryone,donotknow
whatitsliketonothaveanopportunitytoreachtheirfullpotential.
SubSaharanAfricaishometoabouttwentypercentoftheapproximatelyonebillion
adultsintheworldwhoareilliterate(Lewis23).Twentypercentofonebillionadultsinthe
worldwhoareilliterateliveinAfrica(Lewis18).Thatsabigpercentageoftheworld.That
statisticshowshowbadtheeducationsystemisinafrica.OfSubSaharanAfrica,40.3million
childrenofprimaryschoolagedonotattendschool,approximatelyfiftyfivepercentaregirls
(Lewis23).Eventoday,girlsaretreateddifferentlythanmen.KidsinAfricadontgetenough
educationasitis,butmostofthekidswhodonotgetanyeducationatallaregirls.
Theshockingstatisticisthatsome213,000childrenfailedtheirendofschool
examinationfortheacademicyearendinglastmonth,outofatotalofnearly800,000
(Nkosi).25%ofthekidsthattooktheendofyearexam,failed.Thatmeansthat75%of
thempassed,thatsgoodfortheleasteducationcountryintheWorld.Literacyratesin
SouthAfricaarehighbyAfricanstandards.Since1970,literacyrateshavegrownfrom
onehalftofourfifthsofthepopulation(South).ThroughtheMillenniumDevelopment
Goalstheglobalcommunitypromisedallchildrenaqualityeducationregardlessoftheir
gender,ethnicityandeducationalneeds.Theglobalcommunitypromisedsomething
theydidntgothroughwith(Lewis25).
