Physical Geography/Geology Project

Choices for presentation:

Poster, Power Point, Prezi, Newscast, Brochure, 3-D model, Video, or other
to display your findings and provide your answers.

THREE RESEARCH CLASSES TO ANSWER QUESTIONS

THREE CLASSES TO PREPARE PRESENTATION & PRESENT (LAST
CLASS)

PROJECT A
Find a current event in the past 10 years that is based on a tsunami,
earthquake, or volcanic eruption.
Provide the following information:
1) From what type of event did it originate? (Where was the epicenter?
Convergent, Divergent, Transform activity)
2) Explain what the tectonic plates were doing that caused this activity
(Diagram of what is going on under the earth's crust)
3) Create a map to show location and how wide spread the damage.
4) Find a news clip/video clip of the event.
5) Who was affected? In what country (countries)?
6) What types of things were impacted by the event (physically, economically,
and socially)?
7) Give suggestions for people living in other regions that could be hit with a
geological event to help them minimize the impact. (Structure protection,
evacuation plans, etc.)
8) Issues that the area must now continue to deal with in the aftermath of the
disaster.

PROJECT B
Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley are located on and near two fault lines.
There is also evidence of past volcanic activity in the area.
Provide the following information:
1) Provide a map of the valley with the fault lines and the volcanic activity
labelled.
2) From what type of event would it originate? Convergent, Divergent,
Transform activity)
3) Explain what the tectonic plates were doing that caused this activity
(Diagram of what is going on under the earth's crust)
4) What are the names of the fault lines and what type of faults are they?
5) What are the names of the volcanic mountains and ranges in the local/nearby
(Coastal) areas?
6) What issues would Kelowna have to deal with should there be an earthquake
or if there were to be volcanic activity here? (Delta, bridge, molten rock,
dust and debris, escape routes for people?)
7) If you were in charge of creating a plan for the residents of this valley what
recommendations would you make for immediate action to prepare for such
an occurrence. Use existing maps to create evacuation plans and show where
people would go and where they would need to check in?
8) Would the airport be able to be used?
