Winter homes to enjoy the Summer with us.
With Summer on its way (June 20) we are beginging to make plans for our
late Spring and Summer events.

The Village Yearly Yard Sale is on for Saturday, the 18 th of

June. Now is the time to start cleaning out the old and make room for
the new.

We are planning for a BBQ the 16th of July.

There will be more information on that later.

Kootenai County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Volunteers Mega Raffle!!!

Here's a heads up! The Kootenai County Sheriff's Search and
Rescue, local Volunteers unit is holding a fantastic raffle on August 28,
2016.
Local businesses have donated some very expensive items for this raffle, as
they realize the value of our volunteers and our need for funding and equipment
used to help save lives.
Since we are an all-volunteer
organization, we count on the public
for a large part of the money needed to
equip and support our local unit during
life-saving missions.
This is our major fund raiser for
our unit this year and the proceeds will
go to buy new equipment and muchneeded upgrades for our existing
equipment.
Remember, the more tickets you
buy, your chances of winning becomes
greater and so does the support you
provide to our community.
If you would like to help us save
lives by purchasing raffle tickets,
please call me, Tom at 208-699-0232.
Thank you. Village residents, Tom and Teri Newcombe.

Most likely this Summer is going to be hot (when isn't it?) but there's no need
to make it hotter than need be, so here's some Safety Fire Tip for the kitchen.

Nobody wants to have a kitchen fire but if you do, here are a
few tips that can help you safely mitigate the damage.
1) Remember, if it can catch fire, it should not be on the stove, like dishcloths
and paper towels etc.
2) If you think even for a second that a fire is too much, call 911 immediately.
3) Slide a tightfitting lid from left to right or right to left on to
the pot or skillet to smother the flames.
Never slam that lid straight down onto the pot or skillet
because this can force the flames to shoot out the sides, burning
your arm and possibly catching clothes on fire.
4) Your 1st thought might be to throw the pot or skillet into the sink and pour water
on it.
Never use water, (unless it's something as benign as burnt toast) especially if it
is a greasy fire. The cold water will interact with the hot grease and cause it to
explode violently, spraying hot grease and fire. Then you'll have a much bigger
problem.
5) You should have a fire extinguisher near an exit of your home. If
you only have one fire extinguisher, you really shouldn't have it in
a back room where you could get trapped by flames.
If you don't have a fire extinguisher you can use the box of
baking soda. It's nonflammable and it will smother the flames.
Never use flower, the fine dust can burst into a fireball.

Mountain Water Window Cleaning has

proven themselves to be a courteous,
flexible, relatively inexpensive and reliable
window cleaning company for commercial
as well as residential.
Best of all, they can reach those 2nd and 3rd story windows.
Note: This is not a paid advertisement, only a courtesy mention for our community members.

How long a minute is,

depends on what side of the
bathroom door you're on.

TIDBIT: The differences between Solstices and Equinoxes

Solstices and equinoxes are astronomical events that are generated
by the tilt of the earth on its axis as we circle the sun (my favorite
star), that influence the passage of the seasons.
The the Summer solstice, The beginning of Summer is almost upon us, June
20th.
The word Solstice comes from the Latin words sol which means sun and
sistere which means to stand still.
During the summer solstice, the most sunlight reaches the northernmost
extremes of the Earth's hemisphere and providing us with productively longer days
and shorter nights.
The opposite is true for the Winter solstice, around December 21st, longer
nights and shorter days gives us our cold winters.
The word Equinox comes from the Latin words aequus which means
equal, and nox which means night.

That is when, due to the tilt of the earth on its axis, both the northern and
southern hemispheres receive equal amounts of daylight and consequently
nighttime.
This takes place approximately during Spring, March 20th and Fall,
September 21st.

Just for Fun

A Sleek, Succulent Stunning planter
Here's a neat, hands-on project for
those do-it-yourselfers.
Materials: galvanize gutter, tin
snips, protective gloves, 2 gutter end
caps (1 left, 1 right), rubber mallet,
pliers, construction adhesive, drill, wood screws, mixed succulents in 4 inch pots,
pumice, potting soil, hen-and-checks, sedums.
Wearing gloves, cut gutter to preferred length using tin snips. Fit end caps to
gutter and tap in place with rubber mallet. Use pliers to securely pinch in cap edges.
Following package instructions, apply construction adhesive along the inside
seem where the endcap and gutter meet on each end. Allow glue to set.
Drill drainage holes every 4 inches along the bottom of the gutter.
Drill mounting holes along the top of the back of the gutter: one at each end
and additional holes every 12 inches if your boxes extra long.
Holding the gutter in position, mark mounting holes on the deck railing, drill pilot
holes.
Securely fastened the gutter to the railing with wood screws may wish to add
washers to the screw heads if you think your planter might get bumped a lot.
Mix 2 parts potting soil and one part pumice together and fill mounted gutter.
Remove plans from their pots, loosen the root balls and place Them in soil. Fill in
the gaps with sedums and hen-and-checks and water to settle roots and soil.

Bucket Trellis Garden

Here's a fun idea for all those with green
thumbs but little space. A freestanding,
swinging bucket trellis garden.
Buckets are used as pots and hung with S
hooks on a simple trellis framework.
Just lean your trellis against the wall or
fence, add a little love and water and let nature
take its course.
This is perfect for an herb garden, for those
demanding cooks. basil, oregano and thyme
are some of my favorites.
It's a beautiful, inexpensive and simple way to enjoy fresh greens like lettuce,
spinach and kale.
It can also bring brightly colored flowers into your space to enjoy throughout
the season.

A BIT OF EARLY IDAHO HISTORY

Here is a look at the history of mining in Idaho, which has shaped the states
political boundaries, built cities, and supplied the nation with minerals necessary
for todays modern lifestyle:
1860: Ten prospectors Led by Captain E.D. Pierce enter the Nez Perce Reservation
in search of gold.
After a month of no luck, one of the men, Wilbur Bassett, strikes gold along
Canal Gulch.
This discovery sets off one of the largest migrations in American history.

1860: Within six months, prospectors from all over the west stake another 1,600
claims in Canal Gulch.
They came by way of the Columbia and Snake Rivers, making Idaho one of only
two states settled from west to east.

Some of these hard-working men

that risked their lives to make a
living look amused, others quite
casual.
I can't help but wonder if any of
them thought that we would be
looking at their pictures today?
