SCOPE, 1.1 This standard applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for sorating machines. 1.2 This standard defines the requirements with which protective enclosures shall comply. 1.3 This standard deals only with enclosures that are in all other respects stable for their intended ase and which from the point of view of ana workmanship ensued [properties dealt with in this ‘ate niaintained under the normal con mechanical damage of the mac Cproduced for example, by condensation ) corrosive vapotes, fungut oF vermin, This standard does not specify types of provections of electric toachines forthe use in an explosive gas atmospheres, 1.5 Fences external to the enclosure which have to be provided solely forthe safey of personnel are not considered part of the encionare and are not dealt with in this standard. 2. DESIGNATION 2.0 The designasion used for the degree of protection consists of the letters IP followed by two characteristic numerals signifying conformity ‘with the conditions indicated in $ and 4 and Tables I and 2 respectively. 2.1 Single Characteristic Numeral — When it it required to indicate 1a degree of protection by only one characteristic numeral, the omitted ‘numeral shall be replaced by the letter X. For example, IPXS or IP2X. 2.2 Supplementary Letters — Additional information may be indicated by a supplementary letter. 221 Laters Following Numerals — In special applications (such as machines with open circuit cooling for ship deck installation with air inlet and outlet openings closed during stanostill ) numerals may be followed by a letter indicating whether the protection against harmful effects due to ingress of water was verified oF tested for the ot running (leer S ) e running (letter Mt) In this case, the degree of protection of the machine shal fndicated for example, 1P553/ The, abrence of the ears ML and S shall ply that the itended degree of protection was teted in both the caves, machine running al machine not running [zt aie 60 ( Note )}- 2.2.2 Letters Placed Immediately After the Letters WP — For machines suitable for use under specified weather conditions and provided with Aadditiona) protective features or processes, the letter W (placed. imme- diately after the leters IP ) may be used. 5 1S +4691 - 1985 2.3 Example of Designation 2.4 The most frequently used degrees of protection for electrical rotating ‘machines are given in Appendix A. 3.
