catchingupwithitbuttodayIthoughtIdfocusmyattentiononfilmmakerRobertFuest.
FuestdirectedthefirstAIPfilmairingintonightsimpressivelineup,TheAbominableDr.
Phibes(1971)featuringVincentPriceinoneofhismostmemorableroles.
ThelateRobertFuest,whodiedin2012atage84,hasbecomeoneofmyfavorite
filmmakersovertheyearsthankstohisartisticdirectionandabilitytomixfearandhumor
intoacreativecombustiblecocktailthatyieldedsuchgemsasTheAbominableDr.Phibes
anditssequelDr.PhibesRisesAgain(1972)aswellasthebrilliant,stylishandutterly
bonkersMichaelMoorcockadaptation,TheFinalProgramme(1973).Otherfilmsinhis
impressiveoeuvreincludeJustLikeaWoman(1967),AndSoontheDarkness(1970),
WutheringHeights(1970)andTheDevilsRain(1975).
FuestwasbornintheLondonBoroughofCroydonandservedintheBritishRoyalAirForce
beforeattendingtheWimbledonandHornseySchoolsofArt.Aftergraduating,hetaughtfor
abriefperiodandfollowingafewoddjobsthatincludedworkingatbookshops,recordshops
andplayingdrumsinajazzband,FuestjoinedthegraphicdesigndepartmentofABC
(AssociatedBritishCorporation)Television.Soonafterward,hebecamepartofthe
productionteamofanewcuttingedgespyseriescalledTheAvengers.
