1st Sessional Examination
Academic Year: 2013-14
Program: B.Tech
Semester: III
Course: Chemical Process Calculations Code: 2403
Date: 30-10-13
Time: From 9.00 AM to 10.30 AM
Max. Marks: 40
NOTE: Answer any FOUR of the following FIVE questions. Each question carries 10 Marks.
Students should write the answers in serial number i.e. 1a, b, 2a, b, 3a, b, etc. and in one space
in the answer book.
Q1. a) A fuel gas consisting of CO4.7%, CO2 19.7%, CH42.7%,C2H6 1.3%, O2 3.2% & N2
68.4% composition by volume. Calculate i) Average Molecular Weight ii) Composition by weight% [5M]
Q1. b) Find the Density of the above mixture at STP in Kg/m3 and volume of 100 Kg moles of mixture at
37 0C & 1.2 atm. [5M]
Q2. a) A solution of NaCl in water contains 23% NaCl by weight at 20 0C. Density of this solution at that
temperature is 1.148 g/cc. Calculate the composition in mole% and mole ratio [5M]
Q2. b) Calculate Molarity, and Molality of the above problem [5M]
Q3. a) Calculate vapor pressure of ethyl ether (M. W 74) at 20 0C if vapour pressure at 0 0C is 185mmHg.
The latent heat of vaporization is 92.5Cal/g [5M]
Q3. b) Calculate the total pressure of the vapors in contact with a solution at 100 0C containing 35%
benzene, 40% toluene and 25% Xylene by weight. At 100 0C, the vapour pressure of benzene (M.Wt.78)
is 1340 mmHg, toluene (M.Wt.92) is 560 mmHg and Xylene (M.Wt.106) is 210 mmHg. [5M]
Q4. a) Air at 300C and 760 mm Hg has a relative humidity of 60%. Calculate (a) absolute humidity of air
(b) absolute humidity of this air if the temperature is reduced to 20 0C and pressure increased to 2000 mm
Hg condensing out some of the water. [5M]
V.P of H2O at 300C =31.79mmHg; V.P of H2O at 200C =17.51mmHg
Q4. b) Calculate the weight of water removed in the above problem if 1000 m3 of the original wet air
[5M]
Q5. a) A distillation Column is to be designed to separate 30,000kg/hr of a mixture of benzene and
toluene containing 0.4 weight fraction of benzene in to overhead product containing 0.97 weight fraction
benzene and bottom product containing 0.98 weight fraction toluene. Calculate the quantities of top and
bottom products [5M]
Q5. b) A crystallizer is charged with 6,400 kg of an aqueous solution, 29.6% of which is anhydrous
Na2SO4. The solution is coooled, 10% of the initial water is lost by evaporation. Na2 SO4 10H2O
crystallizes out. If the mother liquor (solution left after crystalliztion) is found to contain 18.3% Na2SO4
(by weight). Calculate the weight of crystals obtained. [5M]
