Well,itsbeenalongtimeIwroteapost.Inrailwaysitslotsoftravelingmade
worsewithbadwificonnectionalmosteverywhere.
IhavebeengettingalotsofinquiriesaboutclearingIESwithoutcoachingso
hereweare.Thoughitisdifficulttoimaginehowwouldyoustanda
chancewheneverybodyhascoachingadvantagebutletmetellyouitsnot
impossible.
Butyougottaberealseriousaboutit.InmybatchIhavefewguyswhocleared
ieswiththeircollegeandthattoowithranksundertop20.Weevenhave5
marineengineerswhopasseditwithverygoodrank.Evenpeoplefromvery
normalunknownunheardcollegesareheretrainingwithme.Sowhereeveryou
areyoushouldnotthinkyoudon'tstandachance.Thepointisdedicationand
time.Ireallybelievethatifyougetseriousaboutitearlyinyoursecondyearor
thirdyearorfourthyearandyoumakesincereeffortsyouhavemuchbetter
chancetoclearitcomparedtothosewhoaretakingtimeoffandcoaching.They
havetodealwithcertainmentalpressurehardlivingconditionsandalmostno
timeforselfstudy.Inadditionitasverycostlytopaycoachingfeesandlivingin
Delhisaraiarea.Somypointisifyouareclearyouwanttogoforityoudon't
needtowaittojoincoachingtostartyourstudies.Youcandoitinyourcollege
timestudyingreasonablyregularlyandtakingstudiesseriouslyinsteadof
resortingtolastminutemeasures.Ihopefollowingpointswouldhelp
1.DownloadandtakeaprintofIESsyllabusandstickitonwallwhereyoucan
seeitregularlyrememberingyourdream.Kulkarnisirusetosaythatifyou
havelearntsyllabusbyheartyourworkishalfdone.
2.Whateversubjectsyouarestudyinginyoursemestermatchthemwith
syllabustopicsanddothemwell.Youdon'tneedtoreadforeignauthorbooksto
clearIESbutstayawayfromRkJainsortofbookstoo.Ifindkhurmi,ds
kumar,rkrajputbooksquitegood.
3.Makesureyoumaintainnotescopyandformulacopysidebyside.Atthis
momentyoumightnotseetheirimportancebuttheywillcomeveryhandywhen
youstartforgettingthings,revisingsubjectsinshorttimeetc.PleasepleaseIam
beggingyoutakeitveryseriouslytomakerereadablenotes.Itstheonlything
thatmattersisrevisereviserevisenomatterhowmuchofsharpbrainyouare.
4.Youmightnotunderstandeverythinginonego.Itisveryusualtotake4to5
readingsofatopicatdifferentpointoftimebeforeyoureasonablyunderstand
it.Iamsayingreasonablybecausetheirmightstillbequestionsyouwon'thave
aclueabout.Itsnormal,youdon'tneedtobeexceptionallybrighttoclearIES.
5.Trytodopreviousyearquestionstopicwisetheywillappropriatelychallenge
youandgiveyouanideaaboutwhatisexpectedoutofyou.Againnotevery
questioninthatpaperisneededtobesolvedbyyou.Paperisamixofeasy,
mixedandhardquestions.Trytoraiseyourlevelbutdonotgetdisheartenedby
difficultquestions.
6.Setaside2to4hoursforthisprep.Studythesubjectscominginthesemester
seriouslythiswouldhelpyoutogetgoodgradestoo.Buttrytoreviseprevious
subjectstoo.Youmightbelosingsomefuntimeorsleeptimebuttrustmeitsan
investmentyouaremakingtowardsfuturehappinesswhichisfarmoreworthy
andvaluable.
7.Onceyoudecidetogoforitmakesureeverymomentisspenttocomemore
neartoyourdream.
YouknowwhatIwishedsomeonegavemethisaforementionedadvicewhenI
wascollege.IjustwastedmytimetherewithfriendswhomIdon'ttalktoany

Interviewersaskthisquestiontomakeyounervoussothattheycanbreakyourshield
of confidence. If you reply very confidently saying you wanted to work for a govt
company for recognition and respects it brings or any other reason they would stop
buggingyou.Catchhereisnotgettingnervousnottheanswer.
And anyone who wishes for good future takes risk, and so have you. Don't get
disoriented at last time. I hope you are giving ies 2014. If not please prepare for a
monthandtaketheexam.
Ihaveaverystrongbeliefthatbeforewegetasuccesswefeelextremelyfrustratedfor
theverylasttime.Itslikenightisdarkestbeforedawn.Itdependsonuswhetherwe
choosetokeepwalkingonthepathorlosehope.
PleasekeepyourselftogetheranddecidetogiveeverythingtoIes2014soyoudon't

Ihavebeenreadingyourblogsincelast1year.Iama2012passoutandthenipreparedforGate
13byjoiningmadeeasyweekendbatch.GotAIR3838ingate2013..didn'tjoinMtechasiwasnot
sure that it was my 100% attempt. Although interview calls in PSUs started coming just after
Gate13. I joined Weekend batch again for GATE14 and IES in my target. Now in April I gave
interviewforEPIL,wenttherehighlyconfident.Iamabitroughguy,onewhowillfightonhis
points..soItriedtotakeanINTERVIEWERdowninaHeattransferconceptandrestofthepanel
madefunofhim.Anywaysonly10peoplewerecalledfor2postsandeventopperofwrittendidn't
getselected!Theydidn'tevendeclareresults.Myfatherkeptbangingtheredesksandtheykept
telling lies that it will be out soon. Later after 3 months they told that we gave joining to 2
candidates1weekaftertheInterview.Aclearcutcaseoffraud.NeverminditwasnotagoodPSU
so i didn't took that heavily. Meanwhile struck by DENGUE in Delhi which ripped away my 20
days.MysecondinterviewwasSAIL..itwentreallywell"asifIwastakingtheirInterview"..GDs
wentreallynice.Peopleinmybatchweresurethatiwasthrough.Iwouldgiveita9/10interview.
Otherswereinterviewed47mins..minewentonfor20minutes.AfterthatoneinHALalso..then
icamebackandsatdowntostudyhardon15DecforGATE14.Ihadplentytimeof2monthsto
revise. I had studied everything and done every question except "Mechanics" which madeeasy
doesn'tteach.Ipreparedallmyshortnotesinadvancedandprobablygavemybestshot..willsay
90%ofwhatiamcapableofexhaustingmyself.GATE14AIR2438..anotherdissapointment.
Aftergateihadsometroublewithmyshoulderduetooverexhaustionduringlast2monthsof
GATE almost 12 hrs daily. So couldn't study for 2 months due to a clot in shoulder and
physiotherapysessions.Gatedissapointmentaddedtomiseryandasaresultihavealmostruined
IES14attempt.Otherwiseafoolwouldbewritingthison16thjune.

SoanalyzingGATEiseethatapersonstartsoffwitha0.25probablilitythathewillgeteasyone
and0.25thatheisscrewed.(4thsessionbeingtoughestone).
Iscored59/100.Asecuredno.forgettingaPSUwouldbe75/100.Nowmyparentsaresaying
thatishouldgoforanotherGATEonlyasmymarksareimproving.Butifeelthatevenifigofor
anotherattemptiwillbeabletoincreaseonly10marksatMAX..!Iamapvtcollegeproduct.I
reached there coz i was poor in MATHS and Mechanics and didn't do well in AIEEE...that
weaknesswillalwaysremainalongnomatterhowmuchistudythem.RegardingIES,IgaveESE
2013 without any prep (since i was aiming for GATE14 then) in that i scored 107 in GS paper
withoutanyprep.Ihad"notattended"MadeEasyclassesofGSalsotillthen..!!Peoplediefor
thatGSscore.Inpaper1scored75andinpaper2scored69overall300.Thiswaswithoutany
preparation.ThisyeariwasfocussingonIESbutcutoffduetohealth..nowiknowmyStrength
liesinGSandWeaknessinMaths,Mechanics,Analyticalability...InshortIamsomeonewhocan
doapreviouslysolvedproblemagainveryaccurately..!!
Forthepast2yearsiamlivingconsistentlyatmyhomeandtravel5hoursoneveryweekendto
MadeEasy.IcouldhavelivedinDelhibutitwouldhaveaddedanextracostof10,000permonth
onparents.Moneyisnotaproblembutididn'tfeellikewastingthatwhenicandothesamein
weekends.Althoughihadtobearalotathomethosesarcasticcomments"Aurbetakyakarrahe
ho?"Theyjustripmyheartoff..!!Friends,family,relatives,neighbourhooditseemsentirecity
mockedatme.Ihaveabsorbedeverythingtillthisday...inhopethatonedayathreeletterword
will say it all "IES". You during your prep would have been going home very rarely..but would
haveexperiencedsomethinglikethat.Inmycaseithasbeen2yearsinarow.
Mamirequestyoutopleasegivemycaseagoodthoughtandsuggestmewhetherishouldgofor
GATEorIESnextyear.MyparentsaresayingishouldgiveGATEsecureaPSUandthenIESbut
that GATE is 56 months of absolute waste. I have joined NITHamirpur with an easy branch
Energy.(onAmitKakkarSir'sadvice"jomilrahaholofirageybadho.."Iwillget56hoursdaily
forpreparationinit.IrequestyoutokindlysuggestmeinDETAILwhatshouldbemyPLAN.You

Instead of movies {Except the unavoidable ones}, i watched sitcoms like FRIENDS,
whichhaveonly20minutesepisodethatrefreshesyoulikeanything.Ifeltitsagood
waytoreducestressandavoidlonelinessandinsanity.Oneepisodeperdayofcourse.
In case of books i avoided as much as i can. BUt i had my few favorites which i read
againandagaintoavoidcuriosityandmindoccupancyofnewnovels.
The point is don't spend time in things you don't enjoy much and don't leave the
entertainmentwhichmakesyourhappyandbearable.
