Big 12 Conference presidents are

expected to come armed with data
deemed critical to guiding their decision on expansion when they convene
for meetings this week near Dallas.
Whether that data includes the
University of Cincinnati or any of
the other expansion candidates is
being kept quiet. Big 12 presidents
arent likely to make a decision during meetings Thursday and Friday,
but theyll lay the groundwork for a
resolution expected later this year.
The smallest of the five major
football conferences may end up
remaining at 10 schools, partly because none of the candidates really
stand out as a must-have for the Big
12. Conference leaders have said the
data provided by consultants will
drive the decision on expansion.
The Enquirer compiled its own
data to see how UC stacks up against
the Big 12 schools. We looked at athletics revenue, TV market size, enrollment and other numbers.
It all could determine whether UC
joins a league that would pay it $20
million to $25 million more each year.
Or whether its going to be stuck indefinitely in the American Athletic
Conference, which paid UC about $6
million last year.
The divide keeps getting increas-

ingly bigger, said Courtney Brunious, associate director of the University of Southern Californias
Sports Business Institute. You see
these new media rights deals pushing
more and more money into the power
conferences.
The University of Texas Longhorn
Network appears to be a major expansion roadblock. Many conference
leaders would prefer to create a Big
12 network to generate more money.
But for the Big 12 to create a network, it would require Texas to most
likely give up its own network.
Youve got to make Texas financially whole, University of Oklahoma President David Boren said this
month, according to CBSSports.com.
You cant expect them to give up $15
million (a year).
Texas TV deal could be a reason
Boren has quelled his enthusiasm for
expansion. He had been the most
outspoken Big 12 leader on expansion
until Oklahomas board of regents
reportedly said in mid-May they did
not favor adding schools.
Boren had been an ally for UC, but
thats in question now. As chair of the
Big 12 board of directors, Boren has
major influence in the decision.
I think we kind of got out ahead of
ourselves, Boren told reporters.
Somehow, the speculation got out
ahead of what the reality on the
ground is. I personally do not have
any candidates at this point.
