Oregon statutes and rules addressing educator

ethics:
The ethical educator must keep the confidences concerning that student and
his/her family. He/she must not exploit the relationship for personal gain. The
educator must maintain a professional relationship by not becoming too involved
with the students personal life, not accepting or exchanging romantic or overly
personal gifts. He/she must report to a supervisor if it is thought that the student
may have romantic attachments to the educator, and using appropriate the adult
and student boundary of conduct and conversation.

Mandatory abuse reporting law:


Any district employee who suspects abuse or neglect must report immediately to
notify the Oregon Department of Human Services or local law enforcement
agency. No abuse of a child by a district employee will be tolerated. If a
substantiated report occurs, it will be documented in the employees personnel
file. The district must comply with investigations of suspected abuse. Any
employee who makes a good faith report of abuse will not be subject to civil or
criminal liability.

Confidentiality and sharing of student


information:
Written consent is required before the use of personally identifiable information of
a student is disclosed. Directory information is allowable without consent.

Supervision requirements in public school


settings:
Students must be closely supervised on school grounds and buildings during
school hours. Not included are the hours early in the morning or after school
hours unless they are on a school scheduled activity.

Limits to personal expression in the work


environment:
Employees can participate in political activities of their choice. Personal opinions
should be kept to themselves. The school cannot be used for political
campaigns.

Scope of practice for paraeducator


Educational assistants (Paraeducators) must have a high school diploma and
must be at least 18 years old. They also must have high moral standards. Title
one assistants must have 2 years of college or an associate or higher degree, or
meet vigorous standards.

Allowable uses of school equipment and


technology:
Primary purpose of technology is for educational purposes. Users must abide by
copyright laws. It cannot be removed from school without consent. Hardware
must be purchased through the technology department. The district will provide
computer training.
