Learning outcomes By the end of the unit you should:


1. Know different types of organisations in the music industry
2. Know job roles in the music industry
3. Be able to show your understanding of job roles/opportunities in the music business
This unit provides learners with a broad knowledge of employment opportunities in the music industry
and the jobs undertaken by those who work in it. You will also gain awareness and knowledge of the
basic structure of the music industry, taking into consideration some of the roles undertaken by those
working in it.
We will explore a range of music organisations to discover their purpose, the ways in which they operate
and how they relate to each other.
We will consider:
the roles of people working in these organisations, specifically exploring those involved in the
administration, promotion, performing and production of music events and products
how individuals are required to collaborate and relate to others working in the same area of the
industry as well as those in other organizations

You are working as an arts administrator. Your boss gives you a research project to complete so that all
staff can be briefed by your knowledge on organisations and job roles in the music industry. Your brief is
to give some basic information about music organisations and select job roles then say how they are
linked. Your presentation/interview will be particularly to new recruits who have little experience of
working in the music industry

Undertake a piece of research that answers the following
questions. Your research may take the form of a Power Point
presentation or an interview.
1. What is the role of a performer (e.g. singer,
rapper, DJ, instrumentalist)?
Describe what they do, give an example of good one
(your favourite) and explain why they are a good
performer.
2. What is the role of a marketing manager in the
music industry?
Describe what they do, give an example of a
successful piece of marketing and explain why it is a
successful example (e.g. a poster campaign, internet
campaign or a TV advert etc.)
3. What is the role of a record producer?
Describe what they do, give an example of a good
one and if you can say why they are successful. (Find
an example by searching your favourite song and
who produced it).
4. Do performers, marketing managers and
record producers need to work together?
Firstly say why they do need to work together, then
say why they dont, then say your opinion. Give
examples to support what you say if you are aiming
for the top grades.
