FAS2030 COMPUTER-AIDED PATTERN DESIGN 1

Students develop and apply knowledge, skills and techniques necessary to operate
a personal computer to design and draft patterns for fashion items for the lower
torso.

Prerequisite: None
This course focuses on a garment for the lower torso (for example, A-line skirt,
shorts, pants).
Create a drawing of a garment for the lower torso using Photoshop, Inkscape
or [CAD program]
Create a drawing of the same garment on a croquis using Photoshop,
Inkscape or [CAD program]
Use you drawing to create a composite image (using Canva or Piktochart)
showing at least 2 different outfit ensembles centered around your garment.
Create a pattern design using CAD program.
o Must be to industry standards (darts, grainline, notches, fold-lines, etc.)
Using an appropriate scale, create a layout for the pattern pieces
o Show layout for 45 and 60 fabric widths.

FAS2060 PATTERN DRAFTING 1

Students use body measurements to draft a basic skirt or pant. They demonstrate
drafting techniques needed to create the desired look, and test the draft by sewing
in muslin.
Prerequisite: FAS1030 Sewing Fundamentals
This course will focus on fine-tuning pattern designs to specific measurements and
requirements.
Create a pattern for a garment for the lower torso using CAD. This should be
different that your first one (ie, if your first garment was a skirt, make either
shorts or pants this time), but you should now know how to effectively use
the program.

o Must be to industry standards (darts, grainline, notches, fold-lines, etc.)


o Identify and include ease requirements
Using a word processor, compile a step-by step list of instructions to follow
during the assembly of garment.
o Include all required fabrics and notions
o Calculate yardage of fabrics needs.
Construct garment using muslin or broadcloth. When complete, test for fit
and alter pattern as needed.

FAS2130 CONSTRUCTION FUNDAMENTALS 2


Students apply intermediate construction techniques and knowledge of fabrics and
patterns to complete a garment for the lower torso.
Prerequisite: FAS1130 Construction Fundamentals 1
This course will focus on sewing a garment, as well as documenting progress.
Using pattern created in previous course, create a garment.
Add any missing details to instructions created for pattern including:
o Appropriate fabric suitable for garment function
o Appropriate fasteners, elastic, and interfacing
o Elimination of bulk
o Waist treatment
o Finishing and hem
Photograph steps, and add these as illustration to your instructions.

FAS2140 FASHION MERCHANDISING


Students learn about policies and techniques used by retail operations in the
fashion industry.
Prerequisite: None
This course will focus on introducing students to the industry through internet
research.
Create a dictionary of key terms, and proved examples where applicable), as
they relate to the merchandising of fashion. It must include, but is not limited
to:
o Demographics
o Psychographics
o Fashion cycle

o Quality
o Price
o Depth and Breadth
o Brand
Explain advantages and disadvantages of contemporary fabrics and/or
textiles (ie. Fibre content, care, use).
Explain target market in terms of demographics and psychographics
o Describe a specific target market for your garments
o Outline a merchandising policy for the target market.
Present all your information in an infographic, or another format (consult
teacher).

FAS2910 FAS PROJECT B


Students develop project design and management skills to extend and enhance
competencies and skills in other CTS courses through contexts that are personally
relevant.
Prerequisite: None
Creating a portfolio. This project accompanies the previous 4 courses, and
provides students with a professional platform to showcase their work. Not only
does it connect to the other fashion courses, but to other information processing
courses, specifically ones involving web design. It will be completed over the course
of the semester, and should be in constant development.
Format: Website (Weebly), or other approved medium such as online flip book,
Prezi, etc.
The portfolio must include various elements from the four courses including:

Drawing of a garment for the lower torso using Photoshop, Inkscape or [CAD
program]
Drawing of the same garment on a croquis using Photoshop, Inkscape or
[CAD program]
At least 2 composite image (using Canva or Piktochart) showing outfit
ensembles centered around your garment.
Uploaded PDF of pattern design using CAD program.
Layout for 45 and 60 fabric widths.
FAS2060

Pattern for a garment for the lower torso. This should be different that your
first one.
Document of instructions to follow during the assembly of garment. (Final
copy, with additions outlined in FAS)
FAS2130
Images of final product that could be used in a marketing context.
FAS2140
Infographic synthesising the information from research.

Any other relevant work may be added to the portfolio. Remember to select an
audience for the portfolio (including marketing, merchandising, management, art
and graphic design, design, construction, photography, and photo editing). This may
affect how you present the required information.
