ENGINEERING PHYSICS LABORATORY OBSERVATION (hand sheet)
A.C. FREQUENCY - SONOMETER 2008-2009

Exp. No:
Date:
A.C. FREQUENCY - SONOMETER

AIM:
To determine the frequency of A.C. power supply using Sonometer.

APPARATUS:
Sonometer with Brass wire, paper riders, bridges, weight hanger (100-500gm),
two magnets, AC supply (6VAC) with crocodile connecting wires, Screw gauge.

FORMULAE:

1) Frequency of A.C. power supply is given by

1 T
n= Hz
2l m
where ' l ' is the resonating length between the bridges
' T ' is the tension applied i.e., T = Mg dynes
where ' M ' is the load added to the weight hanger in grams and
2
' g ' is the acceleration due to gravity in cm/sec .
' m' is the linear density of the given wire i.e., m = π r 2 D
where ' r ' is the radius of the given wire and ' D ' is the density of
the material of the wire given (for Brass, D = 8.5 gm/cc).

2) To determine the radius of the given wire using screw gauge

dis tan ce moved
Pitch of the screw =
no. of rotations
Pitch of the screw
Least Count =
no. of divisions on the head scale
diameter of the wire, d = pitch scale reading + ( Head scale reading x L.C .)
d
radius of the wire, r = cm
2
GRAPH:
Plot a graph taking T on Y-axis
and ' l ' on X-axis, which results a Straight line
passing through the origin such as shown below. T

From graph, T = _____ and l = _____

1 T
n= = ______ Hz. l
2 m l
