Objective: Students will understand and discuss Michigan Great Lakes. Students will gain
knowledge of the agriculture and geography of the Michigans five Great Lakes: Lake Huron,
Lake Ontario, Lakes Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Superior. Students will understand and apply
the acronym HOMES. Students will create a drawing and explain the memory or vision of
fishing on the Great Lakes applying knowledge of cliffs, islands, sand dunes, and the architecture
of a lighthouse. Students will gain an understanding of colors and apply the knowledge to write
a description to their Lake Drawing creations.
Class time: 15-20 minutes
Materials: Paper, crayons, markers, pencil, pen, colored pencils
Procedure:
A. Interest Builder: Who can name Michigans Great Lakes?
Share with the students the acronym HOMES
Visit the website: http://sciencewithkids.com/science-facts/facts-about-the-greatlakes.html- and learn some Great Lake facts
B. Direct instruction:
1. After visiting the website: http://sciencewithkids.com/science-facts/facts-about-thegreat-lakes.html and sharing with the students the Great Lake facts and introducing
the acronym HOMES which stands for; Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.
Remind students Lake Superior is the Largest of all the Great

2. the students and teacher will visit the photography of the Great Lakes on the website;
While looking at the webpage: http://sweetwatervisions.com/Pages/galleryGL.html the
teacher will point out the different lakes and the geography associated with the lakes.
Teacher: Students do you see the cliffs of Lake Superior?
Teacher: Students take a look at Lake Michigans sand dunes.
Teacher: Notice the Les Cheneaux Islands of Lake Huron.
Teacher: Presque Isle Lighthouse of Lake Erie.
Teacher: Do you notice the cool colors of the lake.
Teacher: Notice the Lighthouse is in the background.
3. Tell students along with the description of the Michigan Five Great Lakes the fish that
is most commonly associated with the fisheries of each lake:
Yellow perch primary catch
Lake Huron : whitefish
Lake Ontario: American eel, yellow perch, bullheads, sunfish and rock bass
Lake Erie and Lake Michigan: yellow perch, salmon and walleye support the fisheries

Lake Superior: herring, rainbow smelt, lake whitefish and yellow perch

4. Next tell the students to imagine they are on one of the Great Lakes fishing and create
a drawing of the image the students are imagining .If the students do not like fishing
they may draw the Lakes, geography , and some architecture they remember from the
photography.
Remind the students of the islands of Lake Huron, cliffs of Lake Superior, sand dunes
of Lake Michigan and the lighthouse of Lake Erie.
Remind the students to use different colors remembering what cool colors are.
Students will write the name of the lake anywhere on the drawing.
Students will write 3 sentence description of their drawing on the picture.
The students will have the opportunity to share their drawings with the class.
Assessment: I will gain understanding of students comprehension of Michigans Great Lakes,
the students ability to transfer images in their head into a visual art drawing, and then write
about their drawing into three grammatically correct sentences using vocabulary learned in the
lesson.
Lesson Closing: The students will hand their drawings and descriptions to the teacher to display
on the art wall.
