newprocessesandnewmachines,cleverorganizersandadministratorsofthenewcorporations,
acountryrichwithlandandminerals,andahugesupplyofhumanbeingstodothe
backbreaking,unhealthful,anddangerouswork.ImmigrantswouldcomefromEuropeand
Chinatomakethenewlaborforce(254).Wedidnotforceimmigrantstodoanything.They
actuallycame
willingly
tobuildthisnation.ItsasifwealthyAmericansseeinhumaneworkas
theticketpriceforcitizenship.
Withindustrycamecorporationandduetocorporations,greedandcorruptionplagued
theindustry.Thewealthycapitaliststhathadnotbeencalledforthecivilwarwerenow
investinginindustry.DuetothisthenetworkofwealthyindustrialistscreatedanIllscratch
yourbackifyouscratchminekindofprocess.Manufacturersneededrailroadstodistribute
goodsrailroadkeptsteelproductionsteady,bankersfinancedeverythingandallofthislinked
backtothegovernmentandthecreationofbusinessfriendlypolicies.ZinnwritesaboutJ.P.

Morgan,JohnD.Rockefeller,andAndrewCarnegieandtalksabouttheirpracticesofbuyingand
sellingstocksandbonds.thegovernmentgaveacopiousamountofmoneytodevelopthese
industries,andthenpassedpoliciesthatwouldbenefitthemevenmore,allwhiletaking
advantageofcheaplabor.Zinnstates:shrewd,efficientbusinessmenbuildingempires,choking
outcompetition,maintaininghighprices,keepingwageslow,usinggovernmentsubsidies(257).
ThegovernmentwasbehavingexactlyasKarlMarxdescribedthecapitaliststate:pretending
neutralitytomaintainorder,butservingtheinterestsoftherichthepurposeofthestatewasto
settleupperclassdisputespeacefully,controllowerclassrebellion,andadoptpoliciesthat
wouldfurtherthelongrangestabilityofthesystem(258).
Inthe1877presidentialelection,boththeRepublicansandDemocratswereso
concernedwithsupportingbusiness(whileappearingtobeforthepeople)thattherewasno
discernibledifferenceintheirplatforms.Instead,thepresshadtofocusonpettygossipand
personalities.ZinncitesonecommentatorofthetimeInsteadofthisthepressisengagedin
mostamusingdisputewhetherMr.Clevelandhadanillegitimatechildanddidordidnotlive
withmorethanonemistress(259).
thischapterinmyopinionwasverydull.Ithoughtalotofthetopicsitwasbringing
upwereinteresting,however,formostofthetimereadingitIfoundmyselflookingatmyclock
alotwonderingwhenthechapterwillbeover.Ithinkifthischapterwasafewpagesshorter
thanthetextwouldbemoreengaging.Andbecauseithadsomanydifferenttopicsitwashard
tocondensesomeofthem.EventhoughIdidnotparticularlylikethischapter,Ididfindthatthe
topicsfromthebeginningwereprettyinterestingandi'mhappytothatthelastbookforthisclass
wasonefromHowardZinn.
