'TEMPLES PROTECTION MOVEMENT' IN KERALA

The increased vote share of BJP in the recently concluded 2016 Kerala Assembly Elections
indicates the concern among Hindus on Temples Protection in Kerala. This fact is highlighted
by the following views expressed by Shri Kummam Rajasekharan, Kerala State President
of BJP in an interview given to rediff.com on election eve.
At the first press conference you gave after you became BJP state president, you
said that temples in Kerala should not be under the control of the Devaswom Board
and the state government. Why?
What authority has a secular government to administer Hindu temples?
A secular government is beyond all religions and they have no role in administering religious
places.
Every religion has the right to ask for religious freedom.
When Hindu temples are ruled by secular governments, what religious freedom do Hindus
have?
In this secular state, only the Hindus are denied the freedom to take care of their religious
places. It is not right on the part of a state government to interfere in the affairs of Hindu
temples.
The believers or those who go to temples and donate money should have a say in the running
of the temples.
That is what I call democracy, but in Kerala, the state runs the temples. I want the power to
be transferred to the devotees.
How can it be possible?
Even if there is a Devaswom Board, only those who are elected by temple goers should be
there in the board. Let such people take care of the temples, definitely not the state.
The state government can audit or check, but they have no right to administer a temple.
There are 2,000 members in the Devaswom Board, but there are around 13,000 temples
in Kerala. Temples administered by devotees run beautifully. There is no politics involved in
the running of those temples.
The temples administered by local people run much better than the temples controlled by
the Devaswom Board. These temples survive, not because of the government or the Devaswom
Board, but because of the local people.
What do you plan to do as BJP state president?
There is a K P Sankaran Nair commission report, which says how temples should be run.
This was constituted by the then state government in 1983 and the next government has to
only implement this.
If the BJP comes to power, we will definitely do this.
(Rediff.com. 21-1-2016)
The BJP which is already in power at Centre should take inspiration
from Kerala assembly results and work for a Central Legislation
for Temples similar to that of the Wakfs. - Editor

Please fulfill Promise of Temple Reform as a Service to Almighty!

On May 17th 2016 when almost all Exit polls predicted loss in the assembly elections
a message was sent through a staunch devout supporter of Temples Protection Movement
and a family friend of Honble Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalithareading as follows. It is
interesting to read the June 2011 editorial titled Surprising but True on the victory
in last election. Since there is still hope of Divine miracle (Almightys decisive vote
can be cast till the last moment ) it is worth while for powers to be to ponder on
the fact that the unfulfilled promise of Temple Reform is a sure way to please Him.
As a reference also including VAK May 2016 issue where we have covered BJP Manifesto
which can be a template for the reform process. Hope you can get this message across. We
pray that the person who believes in GOD wins the TN elections.
Honble Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalitha as widely reported in the media has thanked
the Almighty for her surprising victory in the 2016 elections against almost all Exit Poll
predictions. It may be a result of her efforts and personal commitment towards devotion
in Tamil Nadu Temples.
In this context the following is the excerpt from VAK June 2011 Editorial titled Surprising
But True
The results of Tamil Nadu Elections have surprised the most experienced pollsters.
They could not predict the scale of the mandate and the subsequent analysis in the
Press of the result has also missed the impact of this important election issue i.e.,
Temple. It is our firm belief that the commitment given to eminent devotees by
the top leadership of AIADMK that they would reform the Temple System through
amendments to the Endowments Act and setup a DharmikaParishad created this
silent wave through the grace of the Almighty. There is a clear pattern; where this
issue has silently, played a major part in the results of AP Elections in 2004, Karnataka
Elections in 2008 and now the Tamil Nadu Elections in 2011. The commitment for
Temple reform is a sure way to win the grace of the Almighty and He being the inner
controller of every voter can create a silent wave, recognition of which is beyond
the scope of material tools available to the pollsters and analysts. We now request
the Honble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu SmtJ.Jayalalitha on behalf of crores of
devotees of Tamil Nadu and rest of the world to take up reformation of the Temple
System as the topmost priority of her administration. We request the Honble Chief
Minister to work towards amendments to the Tamil Nadu Endowments Act on the
lines of similar amendments in AP and Karnataka so that very soon we can have a
DharmikaParishad with eminent people overseeing the administration of Temples
in Tamil Nadu.
On behalf of Crores of devotees VAK appeals to the Honble Chief Minister Selvi
J. Jayalalitha to fulfill the promise of Temple Reform in this term as a service to the Almighty.
O
There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama - 183

SPARKLING SHOOT OF SHAFTS

Sri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai

It is the Seventeenth of May 2016.

I am busy in search of the appealing way of presenting
the anecdote for the 183 rd name of Sri
Vishnusahasranama, with the tension of receiving
the telephone from the office of VAK reminding on
the same. For VAK has given me the seventeenth
of each month as the deadline for sending the anecdote
for the successive month.
I was toying with various ideas of presentation. .I
was still not satisfied .It was elusive.
I felt a small diversion might help. I took the Hindu
for the day and as is my want I turned to the page
on Sports. Amitabha Das Sharma had reported on
the IPL 2016 Match between Kolkata Knight Riders
(KKR) and Royal challengers Bangalore (RCB) on
the previous night at Kolkata.
Sharma had started his column with the sentence
Eden Gardens switched its loyalty to the brilliance
of Virat Kohili as the Royal Challengers Bangalore
Captain anchored the visiting team to an emphatic
nine- wicket victory over host Kolkata Knight Riders.
The message I got from this was that brilliance of
one person is easily proved when those in the opposite
camp switch their loyalty to him.
The Lord alone had absolute brilliance in all the fields.
These Virats have a trace of the same by His Grace
in their fields making them to cause shift in loyalty
of the onlookers.
Even in the field of sports there are ample incidents
to prove how enchanting his acts have been.
In His incarnation as Rama, an ideal human being,
He showed how enchanting His Archery could be.
He was there before the roaring ocean on the Southern
tip of Bharath. Sugreeva, His friend, the king of Monkeys
with an ocean of monkeys was by His side.
Vibheeshana, younger brother of Ravana and his four
companions was also there after having taken asylum
at the feet of Rama.
The army had to cross the ocean at that point with
a width of one hundred yojanas if it were to reach
the northern gate of the fort of Lanka to seize the
fort and liberate His queen Seeta.
Various alternatives to take the army to the other
shore of the ocean were discussed
The suggestion from Vibheeshana that Rama might
take asylum at the feet of Samudra Maha Raja asking

him to show a way to cross the Ocean was appealing

to the Lord.
Rama spread darbah grass and laid on it facing
the ocean seeking its grace and was on fast.
Three days passed. There was no indication of any
response from the King of waters-Samudra Maha Raja.
It was the fourth day.
Rama, tired and feeling hungry decided that enough
was enough.
He felt insulted. Evidently Samudra Maha Raja had
taken Him for an incompetent dud.
He said Let me teach him a lesson
Lakshmana! He called His younger brother. Fetch
me the bow and arrows as cruel as the venomous
serpents. I will shoot those shafts that would produce
the fire during the time of dissolution of the universe
and evaporate the ocean so that the monkeys would
cross the ocean by foot on the bed of the ocean.
Lakshmana brought the bow and arrows as instructed.
Rama took the bow and
tightened the string. Then He placed the arrows On
the string pulled it to such distance as if it were touching
His ears.
Next second! .
Trembling with Fear there stood a group of Goddesses
touching by their hands the auspicious thread tied
around their neck indicating they were married and
their husband who tied the thread was still alive. Behind
them stood a bald- headed deity.
Rama had to stop release of the arrow as they all
felt at His feet. The lady leading the deities still her
hand touching the knot of the thread on her neck
said:
Oh! Child! I am the goddess of River Ganges and I
am your great grand aunt as my foster father is the
great emperor Bhageerata, your ancestor. He brought
me from the heavens by his penance. He let me flow
in the pits dug by his sixty thousand grand fathersthe sons of Emperor Sagara who had completed one
hundred Horse Sacrifices. Thus was the creation
of this ocean.
These deities are various rivers like Godavaree, Krishna,
Kaveri, who also fall in the ocean. We are all therefore
rightly called the wives of the Ocean and the person
behind us is the deity in charge of the ocean. If the
ocean is dried by your arrows then he wont be there.
We all will become widows. Please therefore forgive
his lazy response for the sake of me

At this, the bald deity came to the front seeking asylum.

Please do not shoot the arrows on me. I will tell
you a method by which the stones placed on me
will float and you can easily build a bridge enabling
your army to cross the ocean to invade Lanka
Thank you. But then said Rama You are a bit late.
Having placed the arrow on the string, as a righteous
archer and sincere student of toxophily, I do not withdraw
them without providing them the prey
You want only a target for them.
Yes
There is a beautiful Island called Drumakulya in the
northern portion in the centre of this ocean. It is as
famous and enticing as you are. But there are a few
cruel ugly sea robbers who pollute the place. You
may kindly shoot the arrows at the island to finish
them and purify the area.
Rama shot the arrows at Drumakulya, annihilated
the robbers removed the pollution. He then blessed
the area to be an attractive tourist spot.
As He was shooting the arrow, the grace of shooting
was so enticing that all those on the side of Samudra
Raja who were in the camp opposite to Rama till
then switched their loyalty like the spectators in the
Eden Gardens shifting their loyalty as reported by
the correspondent of the Hindu.
This is just one instance of the glowing shoot of arrows
by the Lord in His incarnation as Rama. There are
many more like His war with Moola Bala, Ravana
etc..

In His incarnation as Krishna such a sparkling shoot

was exhibited in burning the Khandava forest, war
with Baanasura etc.
Because of these sparkling shoots of arrows the Lord
,an envy of toxophilites like Arjuna of Mahabharata,
is called Maheshwasa - the one with enticing shoot
of arrows.
Veda Vyasa could not avoid recalling the incident
of His conquering the Ocean for the sake of Seeta
as Rama as Maheshwasa (name 183) after describing
Him as Mahadridrith, (name 182),the Tortoise that
bore the mountain Mandara during churning of the
ocean another adventure for the sake of getting His
Consort Goddess Mahalakshmee.
Nirukti simplifies this enticing explanation to this
name Maheshwasa by Sri Parasara Bhattar by giving
the literal meaning in a prosaic pattern that He is
called Maheshwasa because He is the one adorned
by the mighty bow called Kodanda when it says

Madhura Vijayam - 56

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II

Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai

Story so far: The story based on the 14th century

incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is
based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura
Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief
Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha
and Dutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol
of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved
by four Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim
invaders. After several adventures the two boys, with
the help of Chenchu tribes found the idol along with
one Kodava who protected the idol for more than
eighteen years deep inside the forest of Chandragiri.
Lord Ranganatha was brought to Tirumala and King
Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler of that place
patronized the upkeep of the idol with daily pujas.
Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief of
the Vijayanagaras mulvoy province reaches Tirumala
in search of Lord Ranganatha and he promises
Vallabha help of Vijayanagara to restore Lord
Ranganatha to Sri Rangam which enabled Vallabha
break his fast unto death. Vallabha and Datta turned
to Kancheepuram on their way back, ensured safety
of Manjari with her neighbors after the death of
Singazhagar who was the key energy behind the
expedition and left the town with disguised Vaishnavas
as the fort doors were closed as a defense to an
impending attack by Vijayanagar army. The disguised
Vaishnava leader was no other than Camphor merchant
who revealed that he was the head of Intelligence
army of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the
Vijayanagar men managed to kill all their pursuers
and escaped to the foothills of the mountain on which
Sambuvarayas fort exists where at the behest of
Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta enter the
Rajagambhira fort as Gem merchants to rescue
Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace and
ensure here safety.
Meanwhile, as a first step the Vijayanagar army mission
was undertaken to conquer Sambuvaraya of
Rajagambhira. Kancheepuram was conquered and
Kampana Rayas army advanced to Rajagambhira
mountain. conquered it and killed the Raja Gambhira
king. The Madurai princes was rescued. Later,
Vallabha and Datta are entrusted with the task of
escorting Princess Madhurangini to Pandya kingdom.
During this long journey, Vallabha expects a heartto-heart chat with the princess to express his love....
Since the princess addressed him as brave man!
Veera and expressed her desire as partly desire

English Translation : CSL Narasimhan

and partly an order, Vallabha was disturbed. Has

the Princess distanced herself from him? was his
question for which he had no answer so far. In the
night he had a painful state of mind. What is there
between me and the Princess? Why should I bother
about her?, why should I worry about what she
said to me or not?. May be it was my mistake.
I have created an expectation for my self. I was
having a feeling about her affection towards me
which I never confirmed with her. Without knowing
her position, building up my own palace of desires
is not a good thing for me. And, now, when I am
experiencing a situation which is opposite to my
expectation, I am sad. Why this situation for me?
Why have I brought myself into this position? He
tried to console himself in many ways. He felt that
like other men and like the description of many
poets in many famous works, feelings of love occurs
to all and hence has occurred to him also. Like
other men facing hurdles to realize their love, he
is also facing. All this feelings are happening to
him like those happening to the other heros of poetic
works and like them he has to keep it totally
personal within his heart, within his mind and within
his soul. He cannot let his feelings out as it may
look awkward. He will have to silently cry within
his soul like the other heros.
Tears are the best friends for love. He read this
some where and he is feeling the same way now.
Therefore, he came to a conclusion that whether
the princess thinks of him or not, loves him or not,
he will think of her and build a passion and love
for her. He will cry for the love in the heart of hearts
and he is experiencing a type of joy in crying for
his love and shedding tears for her. Yes, this craving
for love is creating sorrowfulness in him, making
him shed tears, but it is an enjoyable sorrowfulness
in which he would like to continue to dwell for ever.
Next days journey was also without any event.
Third day, Vallabha was suffering from high fever.
The party soon chose a good place and hit the
camp tents there for stay in the evening and night.
In the night Vallabha lamented and blabbered in
fever. He was getting the vision of his brother ChinnaKulasekharan at times and at times he was getting
his mother Vasanthika in his vision. Vallabha! Did
you do all I had asked you to do? You have not
returned yet! Have you strayed in your way? asked
his mother in his dream.

No mother! No! blabbared Vallabha in high fever.

He woke up, opened his eyes. He did not see
Datta. He may have gone for security work. Water!
asked Vallabha as he was feeling thirsty. He could
feel the heat of his high fever. A divine damsel
was standing in front of him. He was surprised.
He had not seen a divine damsel before. Feet of
divine damsels are levitated. In fever the figure
standing in front of him appeared diffused and
levitated.
Who is this? Is this a divine damsel? enquired
Vallabha
Vallabha was looking at the damsel examiningly
and sharply. He cleared his eyes and saw again.
His eyes became clear and broad. who is standing
there?. Have my love hallucinations not yet
stopped? How can this be true? How can Princess
Madhurangini come into this tent of mine? if the
figure standing in front of me does not belong to
Madhurangini then who is this standing in front
of me?
That girl quickly went out, came with a pot of water
and handed over a glass of water from it to Vallabha.
Vallabha was surprised to see. who is this?, it
looked very familiar the smile is also familiar.
who is this? thought Vallabha for a moment in
his mind.
Please drink the water. Dont you recognize me?
said the sweet voiced lady.
Is she the princess?. How can this be? How
can she come into my tent?
Are you the Princess? Am I not hallucinating
here? asked Vallabha.
If the water you have drank just now is true then
I am also true replied the princess.
No Princess! I am hanging between dream and
reality. Not only you, but even your speech also
is as if in dream for me responded vallabha.
Soon, Vallabha again closed his eyes. His eyelids
were hot and it closed the eyes. His whole body
was burning with high temperature and fever. He
was getting mixed voices of the Princess, ChinnaKulasekharan and his mother Vasanthika. He got
drowned in a huge depth of confusion and became
unconscious. After a long time, he slowly opened
his eyes. The same figure was sitting beside him
with concern in her eyes.
Oh! Princess! Are you in front of me? Is that
you princess? enquired Vallabha. Yes! It is me
only! responded the princess.
I am unable to believe said Vallabha.
Why? enquired the princess.
You are like the queen. How can you come here?

Your private attendant Anthahpura kariyam will not

accept replied Vallabha
If I have some personal desires, can anyone stop
me? responded the Princess.
I am more than grateful Princess! said Vallabha.
Vallabhas fever reduced in two days and he became
fit to travel again. After this the caravan again started
its journey. Because, it would be tough for Vallabha
to travel on horse, he was given a palanquin. Vallabha
slept in the Palanquin for half of the time and for
other half he was awake. On the forth day everyone
reached the town of Mulvoy. When they reached
there, they took Vallabha to the hospital next to
the temple. The head physician started treating him
in the morning. It took over a week for Vallabha to
be completely alright.
After Vallabha became completely alright and started
to move around like before, he called Datta and
said Datta! I want to know about an item if it is
true or false. I am unable to judge. Will you help
me?
Ask Vallabha! said Datta.
Enroute, when we camped for my fever to reduce,
I felt like the Princess came to my tent and talked
to me. Is this true or my hallucination? asked
Vallabha.
You look crazy! You think the Princess, who has
the status of the Queen would come to visit you
in your tent? She is not an ordinary lady. You must
be dreaming. Just because she had talked to us
while in trouble does not mean she will come and
talk to us like equals. Responded Datta.
Vallabha was startled.
Datta! All what you said is right. Have you not seen
her enter my tent at all? enquired Vallabha
unbelievingly.
No replied Datta.
Has anyone else seen? re-enquired Vallabha
When it has not happened how could some one
have seen it responded Datta
Vallabha became perplexed and speechless.
He was very happy to think about the sweet memories
that happened with him, with the princess entering
his tent, giving him water and watching him recover.
And now, lo! He felt all that fortress of sweet memories
had to be demolished as imagination which he was
not prepared for. He felt helpless.
May be what Datta said is true. If someone
excessively loves some one and had sweet feelings
in loneliness, he will have to face all these feelings
of real items becoming hallucinations and
hallucinations becoming real. It is a must for everyone
in the state of Vallabha to go through this.

Vallabha said to himself there is no use in thinking

about all these items. Let me concentrate on
work at hand. At the time when he thought that
he should focus on work in his hand he heard
the voice Hai, ha ha hai hai hai! . a beautiful
palanquin carried by many people approached
the entrance of the hospital.
Vallabha expected the beautiful princess to alight
from the Palanquin. But to his chagrin, a palace
servant approached him from the side and said
Sir, the Palace Karyam (palace service head)
has sent this palanquin for you to visit
Sathyamangalam.
Vallabha became pale and deceived. For lovers
one can see how even small deceptions become
big set backs. Vallabha did not show his feelings
on his face.
Why do I need this palanquin? asked Vallabha
No Sir! You are recuperating and hence should
not take undue trouble. Therefore they have made
this arrangement. What did he mean by they
have made arrangements? Could he have not said
straight that Princess had made the arrangements?
Any how, Vallabha felt it was not proper to ask
who had made the arrangements for him. He
accepted and said:
Ok! Good. Thank you! and sent away the palace
servant. Later, he went inside the hospital hall
and sat for some time.
mm! lets start. Time is running out said Datta
which started to energise the otherwise passive
Vallabha.
Both of them started.
When he came out he was startled to see 20
armed horsemen waiting to escort him.
why do we need so many people. Are we not
going to Kongu kingdom? Is that place still not
part of Madurai Sultan? The people there are
paying taxes to sultan. Under these circumstances
if Vijayanagara armymen are seen will it not
become a reason for a fight? enquired Vallabha.
The commander was head down, silent for a while
and then got strength to answer the query of
Vallabha.

Sir, dont you know what happened here recently?

asked the commander
what? What has happened? enquired Vallabha
As soon as they heard the news that
Sambuvaraya was defeated, the Kongu satraps
have announced that they have no more allegiance
with Sultans and they will accept the suzerainty
of Vijayanagar and will give their taxes to the
Vijayanagar king and not the Sultan any more.
The message regarding this development has been
sent to Rajagambhira kingdom where our king
is currently camping. Even before that the local
Vijayanagar representative of Mulvoy has accepted
our proposal and hence all the Kongu provinces
are part of Vijayanagar now said the commander.
Vallabha was very happy.
He asked with enthusiasm Oh! Commander sir!
Is this true? Is what you say true!
Yes sir. We have the royal emblem of Varaha
and wherever this is accepted on the way, all
are our land belonging to Vijayanagar empire.
Replied the commander.
Aha! Has my country also become independent?
I feel proud about this said Vallabha.
We are also happy, sir. And for security reasons
we wanted to postpone this journey of the princes
by a few more days said the commander.
Why? Why do you want to postpone the journey?
enquired Vallabha.
Since the Sultan had lost Thondai mandalam
and kongu we dont know what his reaction will
be. Considering the security we are planning to
bring in a portion of our army for security of this
place. Also we would like to inspect the route
for security and if secure, we now dont have to
reach south of Pandya kingdom via Malayala
province. We can reach via Kongu provinces in
short route said the commander.
Ok. That is also a good idea responded Vallabha.
When he said that he felt as if the Princess is
visiting Sathyamangalam and meeting his mother
Vaasanthika. He felt as if his mother is welcoming
the Princess. After some amount of hallucinations,
Vallabha started to leave with others.
(to be continued)

NEWS PURI TEMPLE ROW BRINGS RELIEF

TO NAVEEN BUT REDEMPTION LIES IN RESTORATION
When Biju Patnaik shot off a letter to Narasimha Rao
In 1992 when two stones fell from the main temple roof, the
then CM Biju Patnaik shot off a letter to PM Narasimha Rao
seeking protection of the temple. Within two days, ASI DG
reached Puri. Repair work started in three weeks and sanctum
sanctorum was handed over by May-end the next year.
ASI spent only L9.38 crore on shrine in 30 years
The whole issue is symptomatic of the deep-seated
indifference of ASI towards the shrine. It has been in
charge of conservation of the shrine since 1975.
According to information available through RTI queries,
it has spent barely about Rs 9.38 crore in 30 years
(between 1985 and 2014).
........With the annual Rath Yatra drawing close, attention of
the entire the State now stands shifted to the conservation
of the holy monument at the hands of the national
archaeology body. While the ASI has invited sharp criticism
for its apathetic attitude, the BJD Government also faced
flak for sitting pretty, prompting the CM to shoot off a letter
to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 13, two days
before Mitra put in his papers. Mitras resignation led to
immediate outrage he still has not disclosed what
triggered the decision eight years after he was made a
member of the panel but the sheer timing sure has
saved Naveen the blushes as his party was at its wits
end over how to take on a unified Opposition. With Union
Minister Dharmendra Pradhan taking up the matter with
Mahesh Sharma, his counterpart in the Culture Ministry,
the spate of events has taken a new turn.
A Central team, led by Union Culture Secretary, has visited
the Puri Temple to take stock of the situation. On his part,
Naveen also held a telephonic talk with the PM before
making an on-the-spot assessment of Jagamohan to
silence the critics. Mitras claim that the Jagamohan,
main prayer hall of the shrine, is waiting to crumble if
immediate repair and restoration measures are not
taken has grabbed the centre-stage with all political
parties now making a beeline to the temple.
The whole issue, though, is symptomatic of the deepseated indifference of ASI towards the shrine. It has been
in charge of conservation of the shrine since 1975 and
well aware of the stress the 900 year-old structure has
undergone. According to information available through
RTI queries, the ASI has spent barely about `9.38 crore
in 30 years (between 1985 and 2014) which speaks
volumes of its disinterest. The ASI had formed two teams
in 2006 a 14-member technical committee to assess
the damage and suggest restoration measures apart
from a six-member core committee to supervise the
whole process. The core committee has not met even
once. On the other hand, the technical panel, as per
Mitras own admission, was allowed to inspect the
Jagamohan only last year during which it came across
the cracks on the beams and columns. Its suggestion to
install stainless steel frames to support the structure
was apparently rejected by the ASI which had also
requested another team from IIT, Madras to suggest
remedial measures.
Last year, when the expert panel headed by its permanent
chairman Prof AP Gupta, a former Head of the Department
of Civil Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, inspected the
temple, it had detected major cracks in the inner roof of

Jagamohan and on the north east beam and support

column. It had then suggested that ASI must carry out
repairs to bring structural stability to the main prayer hall.
What took the ASI so long to act needs a thorough
investigation. There is nothing new about the decaying
structural stability of the Puri temple which is thronged by
millions of devotees every year but the ASI has long been
at loggerheads with the State Government and Sri
Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) over the
restrictions the latter imposes during restoration works
in view of the multitude of daily rituals. This has to be
sorted out by taking the servitors bodies on board before
things get out of hand. The 12th century shrine is one of
the four dhamas of the country and an emotive issue
for both Odias and crores of Hindus.
The fallout of ASIs actions will not only be under public
scanner but could also snowball into a major political
issue. Besides, the Jagamohan is nothing less than
an architectural marvel given the fact that the pyramid
structure (Pidha Deula) of the main prayer hall has been
built without use of mortar. The State administration must
also take equal responsibility by mounting pressure on
ASI instead of passing the buck onto the Centre which
has been a pattern with it. In 1992 when two stones,
weighing about a tonne each, fell from the main temple
roof on August 13, the then CM Biju Patnaik shot off a
letter to the PM Narasimha Rao seeking immediate
protection of the temple.
Within two days, the ASI DG reached Puri. The repair and
restoration work started in three weeks and the sanctum
sanctorum was handed over to the temple administration
by May-end the next year. Why similar measures cannot
be taken up now is beyond logic.

ARCHAKAS URGE CM TO APPROVE SERVICE RULES
Leaders of the A.P. Archaka Samakhya and Temples
Protection Movement on Friday urged Chief Minister N.
Chandrababu Naidu to expeditiously approve The Andhra
Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and
Endowments Hereditary Archakas Qualification and
Emoluments Rules, 2015, which is pending with him
since December 2015.
The approval of the service rules would benefit thousands
of hereditary archakas, who are bogged down by nonclearance of retirement benefits, succession rules and
their service issues, Temples Protection Movement
Convenor C.S. Rangarajan asserted at a meeting at the
Prathama Nandi temple in Nandyal in Kurnool district.
Tax on donations
The government was not granting a pie to temples, but
they were functioning with the contributions made by
devotees. Ironically, the State government is levying a tax
of 21.5 per cent on donations made by the devotees to
temples and utilising the taxes to pay the salaries of
employees right from the executive staff to the
Commissioner of Endowments, Mr. Rangarajan stated.
However, the temple employees were being treated as
second-grade citizens, he lamented. Major demands
such as implementation of PRC, regularisation of
services of non-muster roll workers and compassionate
appointments were pending for long, he said.
A.P. Archaka Samakhya organising secretary P. Rambabu,
secretary K. Srinivas and others were present.

Nookalamma temple awaits woman priest

At a time when women's entry into temples has been
recognised as a fundamental right, here is a classic case
of a woman priest at Nookalamma Ammavari Temple at
Kakinada, who was baulked by the authorities to succeed
as a temple priest. Strange as it may sound, but its true.
Nookalamma Ammavari Temple (NAT) has the custom
of appointing women priests ever since it was
consecrated in 1975.
In line with the tradition, Endowments officials at
Rajahmundry and Kakinada submitted a report soon after
the passing away of Kasi Ratnam, a woman priest (Asadi),
stating that her younger daughter, Madada Kanchana, be
appointed as the Asadi on compassionate grounds. An
appeal was made to the Endowments authorities that
Kanchana had all the qualifications to be appointed as
Asadi. She had passed Class X and cleared the required
Devatha Agamamana Examination.
She had experience of performing all liturgical rituals by
way of assisting her mother. Ch Hanumantha Rao,
deputy commissioner, made an appeal to the
Endowments Department to appoint surviving daughter
as priest in place of her deceased mother. The report
details the practice of appointing of Asadis since 1975.
First Asadi appointed was Bade Appayamma, daughter
of Pikki Adayaa. She was succeeded by Bade
Kodandamma, daughter of Pikki Adayya.
After the demise of Kodandamma, Bade Kasi Ratnam,
daughter of Gandha Polayya, was appointed. It clearly
shows that persons belonging to same family have been
appointed as Archakas at the NAT. The temple was also
having sizable income. For the Assessment Year 201213, the income of the temple was Rs 7,60,219. It rose to
Rs 8,23,467 during the Assessment Year 2013-14. The
temple posted an income of Rs 6,07,513 during the
Assessment Year 2014-15.
Bade Kasi Ratnam had worked in the temple for a period
of 20 years and was drawing a monthly salary of Rs
6,000. She passed away on January 20, 2015. The
employee ID of the deceased was 499 and the temple ID
is 10888. (Metro India 24-5-2016)
Ghanapatis children in search of their roots
Kramapati, Ghanapati, Somayaji and Vajapayee are
some of the highest degrees in Vedic education and those
who have achieved them will be honoured by adding the
tag to their name. Delta areas in East and West Godavari
districts are not only popular for paddy production, but also
for the rich Vedic tradition for more than 500 years.
The Vedic scholars settled down mostly in Agraharams
(specially designed lanes) like Peruru in Amalapuram
rural mandal, Nandampudi, Vyaghreswaram,
Vakkalanka, Gangalakurru and Tondavaram villages in
Ambajipeta mandal of Konaseema region in East
Godavari and the most popular village Iragavaram in
West Godavari. Ganti Lakshmana Somayajulu, Ganti
Purushothama Somayajulu, Nemani Somasekhara
Avadhanulu and Nemani Jwala Narasimha Avadhanulu
are popular in Peruru and Amabjipeta mandals.
According to Nemani Sriramachandra Murthy, Head of
HDFC Bank, Raichur, many of their families have settled
in Nagpur, Mumbai and Chennai about two generations
ago for livelihood, particularly in Railways, though they

had learnt conducting Yagnas and Homams and were

well-versed in Vedic sastras.
This happened in the 1950s and then in my generation
youngsters started going to Bengaluru and Chennai for
software jobs as Vedic rituals would not earn bread and
butter, he added.
But, there was a sea change since the last one decade
as the youngsters started looking back to their roots.
They are coming to Agraharams. Every year during the
summer they are coming with families and spending
almost a month here to learn daily rituals like Sandhya
Vandanam from their grandfathers, Mr. Murthy added.
Pidaparthi Sivarama Sarma of Sri Dattatreya Veda Vidya
Gurukulam, Rajamahendravaram, said though the youth
were getting attracted to Vedic culture and learning rituals,
many scholars were not encouraging them to enter their
own profession or learn the Vedas.
Dr. Gullapalli Dattatreya Ghanapati, who had done
research in Vedic literature and head of the Gurukulam,
said once the number of institutions went up, the next
generations would automatically carry the torch of the
Vedas to the masses.
Like Bharata Natyam and Kuchipudi, the young generation
of the Agraharams wants to preserve the Vedic culture in
these districts, says Nukala Bapanna Somayajulu.
Maha Mahopadhyaya and Vedic adviser to Sringeri
Peetam Sri Sri Viswanatha Gopalakrishna said the East
and West Godavari districts were the only places which
would continue to produce hundreds and thousands of
Vedic scholars.

7) G.O.Ms.No.13, Revenue (Endt.I)Department, dt.8-1-2016.
-o0oORDER:The Government has reviewed its orders issued in the references first to sixth read above and
accordingly decided to withdraw its orders issued in the reference 7th read above. Consequently, the orders
issued in the references 1 st to 6th read above will come into force.
2.
The Commissioner, Endowments shall take necessary action accordingly.
(BY ORDER AND IN THE NAME OF THE GOVERNOR OF ANDHRA PRADESH)
J.S.V. PRASAD
PRINCIPAL SECRETARY TO GOVERNMENT
The Andhra Pradesh Government through the above orders has withdrawn the abeyance order on several
GOs issued due to pressure from certain section of the Endowments Department Officials who were obstructing
the much needed reforms. The fact that the Government could overcome the pressure from the Department
Officials is a welcome sign for future. The key initiatives which will now come into force are :1.
More Powers to Dharmika Parishad in recruitment and promotions of Endowments Department Officials
at various levels. The GO 337 gives such powers to the DharmikaParishad which if implemented will
ensure that Endowments Officials with Dharmik mentality and knowledgeable on Hindu Dharma alone
are appointed a key reform initiative.
2.
Rationalization of Contributions is another much needed initiative which was proposed in GO 927 but
was again kept in abeyance due to pressure from Officials. This GO orders that the contribution to EAF
from which Endowments Department Officials salaries are paid be reduced from 12 % to 8%. Simultaneously
the GO proposes the increase in contribution to Common Good Fund from 5% to 9%. This increased
contribution should be utilized for undertaking much needed renovation of ancient temples and also to
provide funds for Dhoopa Dheepa Naivedyam in low income temples. Further the GO orders that 2%
of the CGF contribution should be used for Hindu Dharmik activities targeted to propagation of Hindu
religion reducing conversions.
One other important aspect of the GO is complete exemption from contribution for low income 6C category
institutions. Enabling them to use the save money for better pay towards employees and also for other
Dharmik activities.

dissension is not amenable. Prowess alone is agreeable for me here."
