IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION

ALEXIS ROGERS & ELLIE ROCHELEAU

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Implicit Differentiation is used to solve for

given a function, which can then be used
to determine slope at a certain point.

WHEN DO I USE IT?

Implicit Differentiation takes the

derivative of an equation that uses
both y and x.

PRE- QUIZ

QUESTION 1

Click on the equation that doesnt require Implicit

Differentiation.

+ 2y =

2xy+ 3

y=

NICE JOB!

TRY AGAIN

Hint:
Remember to only pick equations that
include both y and x, and y has an
exponent greater than 1

QUESTION 2

What does stand for?

A.the integral

B. a point on the graph

C. the slope
D. the area under a
curve

Hint:
To find the derivative of rewrite e
(including all exponents and the
coefficient), then multiply by the
derivative of the exponent.

IMPLICIT
DIFFERENTIATION

REMEMBER

WHEN TAKING THE DERIVATIVE OF THE Y VALUES,

ATTACH TO THE END OF THE TERM.

EXAMPLE 1

Find when given 3y+4=8

Step 1: take the derivative of each term
end of the term when dealing with y
3 + 8x = 0

Step 2: solve for
3 = -8x
=

*dont forget at the

EXAMPLE 2

Find when given 2+ 4x

4y + 34
4y = 4 - 3

YOU CAN THEN USE TO SOLVE FOR SLOPE AT A CERTAIN POINT BY

PLUGGING THE POINT IN TO THE EQUATION.

EXAMPLE 3

Find when given + 5y = 3 and solve for slope at (2,3)

Step 1: Repeat process from examples 1 and 2 to solve for
2y + 5 = 6x
(2y+5)

= 6x *pull out as your GCF

=
Step 2: Plug in the given point to the equation to find slope at this point
=
=
* This is the slope at (2,3)

EXAMPLE 4

Find given 2xy + 4

2x + 2y + 3
*use the product rule
2x
= -2y - 3
