Dear Matt,

Writing 2 was a course that taught me to write and revise WPs this quarter. From these
WPs I have learned that I should start reading like a writer rather than reading as a reader that
doesnt follow the process of the writers writing. By writing the WPs, I have learned to write for
an audience which help shapes my WPs. By revising my WPs, I have learned that my writing is
usually written for my teachers that I try to please with my fancy writing, but I learned that that
wasnt needed and that I should write to fit my audience and purpose.
In WP1, I learned of genre. Genre was taught to me as a set of conventions that make it
up. The conventions and audience are what shape my writing to create a certain genre. Genre
helps me understand what the writer is trying to portray to a certain audience and through
reading through many types of writings with different genres, I learn what the writers purpose
and who the writers audience is for.
In WP2, I learned about discourse communities. Discourse communities are specific
communities or an audience that some writers write to and only those discourse communities
understand what the writer is writing about than compared to those that arent in the discourse
community may not understand what the writer is writing about. Through writing about
discourse communities, I learned of the importance of audience. The audience is what shapes
your writing and that by writing to a certain audience may cause you to use a different type of
writing style for that type of discourse community.
In WP3, I learned used what I learned in WP1 and WP2 to help me write this essay. I
used all the skills of reading like a writer, using genre, using conventions, and discourse
communities to help me write this essay. I used all these skills to analyze many articles and
readings. I read all the articles like a writer and paid attention to the audience that the writers
were writing to. In this WP, I wrote about how I used these skills to help me become a better
writer.
I revised my WP1 and WP2. I revised WP1 and WP2 because my thesis wasnt strong
enough and I didnt understand the concept of genre and discourse communities that well, and

also my flow and organization of the essays werent well though out. I revised the thesis for both
WPs. I have also changed some of my transitions to help make the flow of the essays better. I
would like to improve on my thesis and try to organize my essays better. This portfolio helped
me learn more about audience and that that is what shapes many writing. I have changed my
style of writing by addressing the audience more.
