Assignment 2: An essay
Your task is to:
1. Write an essay which considers what is known about the way in which young language learners
(YLLS) should be assessed.
2. You will first need to limit the scope by deciding on the specific focus of your essay.
Deadline:
By Session 11, May 4th, you should submit your essay electronically to maria.britton@thebritishschool.pl
Additionally, you can email me at any point before Session 8 (April 13th) if you would like me to approve
your proposed title for the essay.
Word limits:
The word limit for the title is 30 words.
The word limit for the essay is 3000 words +/- 10% (i.e. 2700-3300 words). Please note that essays outside
this word limit will not be accepted.
To pass this assignment:
1. Decide on a clear title which informs the reader of the focus and the scope of your essay.
2. Structure your discussion of the selected topic by reviewing relevant studies (adhering to the
criteria specified in Assignment 1 rubric). A minimum of 8 empirical studies must be included. In
the essay you do not need to discuss all the findings and possible implications or limitations of each
study. Discuss only the ones that are relevant to your essay. It is important that you reflect on what is
relevant to your discussion. Please ensure that you give an accurate account of the studies that you
report, e.g. by providing context, participants and indicating that you are only reporting selected
findings where appropriate.
3. Use published research to argue your point or illustrate issues in assessment of YLLs. The essay
should not consist of your opinions, experiences and/or beliefs. If you want to make a point, you
should identify a published paper that is relevant to your point. It is also possible that certain issues
in assessment of YLLs have not been researched. You can state that in your essay but you must
ensure that your statements are accurate e.g. if you claim that something has not been research, it
must be true that it actually has not been researched.
4. Use the terminology of assessment that we discussed in class meaningfully.
5. Ensure that you write in an academic style, in English that is essentially free of errors. Please see a
reference to a MOOC on Trello. Please refer to your personal feedback from Assignment 1and slides
from Session 6.
6. Include clear referencing in the APA style. This refers to in text referencing as well as the list of
bibliographical references.
7. Proofread your work carefully and correct it before submitting. It would be advisable to have a peer
proofread your final draft.
The task should be word processed (font size 12, double spacing between lines, all margins 2.5cm) and
submitted electronically to the tutor by emailing it to maria.britton@thebritishschool.pl. Please proofread
your work before submitting. Please note that your work will be checked with anti-plagiarism software.
