This primary source video podcast with Ruby Bradley helped me to understand the risks
she took while being a (captive) nurse in the Army. When she boarded the sick and
wounded in a plane, she was the last one to get aboard and just as she did her ambulance
exploded. Also, when she gave her food to children she had shrunk down to just 86
pounds. I used this information in my project when I talked about quotes she gave from
this video and how she saved lives by working hard and being kind.

This primary source journal, about the place where Ruby Bradley was held prisoner while
helping people, helped me understand what it was like where Bradley was aiding people,
and also what she saw and went through. There were old men dying at this camp
everyday (about one to two of them), mainly because of the lack of food. When it was
explained in the journal that they had seen their troops coming in to help, it showed there
was hope and how wonderful it was to finally see them. I used this information in the
historical context of my project (second layer) describing where Bradley was being a
prisoner while being an army nurse, which was the Santo Tomas Internment Camp.

This primary source website about the Santo Tomas Internment Camp (where Ruby
Bradley was held prisoner) helped me to understand exactly what it was like living in this
camp, backed up by quotes from Lt. Rita G. Palmer. The Santo Tomas Internment Camp
(No.1) was as dirty as the other buildings, in which that group had been quartered.
Weekly inspections were held to try to make the camp as livable as possible, because it
was not doing so well, with the bed bugs, cobwebs, etc. I used this information in my
project when I talked about the Santo Tomas Internment Camp (in the Historical Context
Section).

This primary source photo (born digital) with Ruby Bradley helped me to understand
what she looked like. Also, the information that came along with the picture helped me
to understand background information on her before the war and just how heroic she was
(which was very heroic). Bradley was a career Army nurse before the war began and in
the picture information, it stated she spent over three years as a POW, performing
surgery, delivering babies, smuggling supplies, and comforting the dying in the camps. I
used this in my project in the background information section and when it is explained
how Ruby Bradley is so well known.

This secondary source audio clip(online) about Ruby Bradley helped me to understand
little facts about Bradley that showed she was definitely a hero. This audio explained
how Bradley and other nurses took care of the sick and how they taught good hygiene to
the prisoners. After both wars, she retired as a full Colonel in 1963. I used this
information in my project on the home page as a link for an overview of Ruby Bradleys
actions in the Army and what kind of person she was.

This secondary source reference source explaining about Ruby Bradley helped me
understand exactly what kind of help she was giving to people while nursing and what
she was doing before the war had begun. She was serving in the Philippines when the
Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She was in the Army Nurse Corps, and got captured
three weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, at the camp she assisted in more than 230
major surgeries and delivered 13 American babies. I used this information in my project
in some of the background information of Ruby Bradley and when talking about her
involvement in the war.

This secondary source newspaper about Ruby Bradley helped me understand exactly
what she did in the prison camp she was in, to help others. She was a nurse that snuck
surgical tools from camp hospitals to patients and allowed herself to starve, so she could
give her food to children who were starving. Bradley had earned 34 medals for her
bravery, dedication, and courage. I used this information in the part of my project where
I explained why she was important in history and her involvement in the war.

This secondary source website about Ruby Bradley helped me to understand more of her
life before the war. Ruby Bradley was born on December 19, 1907 and was originally a
teacher before she was a nurse. But, after being a teacher for awhile, she gave it up to go
to school and become a nurse, and later to join the Army Nurse Corps in 1934. I used
this information in my project in the background information section, talking about Ruby
Bradleys life before the war.

This secondary source reference source about Ruby Bradley helped me to understand
how she put others before herself. She refused to leave a plane in Korea until she loaded
the sick and wounded onto that plane. She did this even though she was surrounded by
100,000 Chinese soldiers. The prisoners with her named Bradley and many others Angel

in Fatigues. I used this information in the part of my project where I explained what her
fellow captives thought of her and how dedicated and thoughtful of a nurse she was.

This secondary source video clip (online) about the place Ruby Bradley was held
prisoner while helping people, helped me to understand exactly what the Santo Tomas
Internment Camp was like. This video clip was a photo documentary of pictures of
people in the camp, as well as places in the camp and of the camp, during the second
world war. There were many different roles people had in the camp and many different
things they did, as shown in the pictures. I used this in my project under the historical
context section talking about the Santo Tomas Internment Camp.
