    Changeisaninevitablepartoflifethateveryoneandeverythinggoesthrough.Thereis
    nopartoflifeortheworldthatisimmunetochange,regardlessofthesituation.While
    everythingispronetotheinevitable,therearesomepartsoflifethattakealittlemoreeffortor
    persistencetoworktowardschange,specificallyapositivechange.Itsthepartoflifethatisthe
    hardest,yeteasiesttasktofulfill.OverthecourseofUnitedStatesHistorythisyearwehave
    discussedanumberoftopicsregardingidentity,membership,andcommunitythatallrevolve
    aroundonecommonidea:change.
    Livinginasocietyconsistingof300million+people,makingadifferenceisnotaneasy
    tasktocomplete,however,itisnotimpossible.Itisoftenchallengingforpeopletofindavoice
    andbecomeanupstanderbyengagingintheircommunitiesratherthancontinuelifeasa
    bystander.DuringU.S.History,weexaminedavarietyofsocialactivismexamplesthathave
    occurredinAmericanhistory.Forinstance,inQuarter3,webrieflyviewedtheeventsofLittle
    Rock9,agroupof9AfricanAmericanhighschoolstudentswhointegratedintoanallwhite
    highschoolinLittleRock,Arkansas.Despitebeingraciallyandphysicallyabused,thenine
    studentscontinuedtoattendaschoolwheretheyweregreatlyunwanted.Theirpersistenceand
    determinationtochangeAmericanculturedisplayedanaccuraterepresentationoftheeffectone
    canhaveonsociety.

    Personally,Iamnotaveryoutgoingperson.Ioftenchoosetokeeptomyselfandwould
    rathernothavetoexposemyselftoeveryone.WhileIamquietandnottoooutgoing,Istillview
    myselfasasilentupstander.Ihavetheabilitytorecognizethatchangeneedstobemadewithin
    societyandwillparticipatetowardsmakingchangeratherthanjustcomplainingaboutcommon
    issuesinmycommunity.Ihavetheabilitytoseetheharshrealitiesoftheworldandamableto
    recognizethattheywillnotchangewithoutapersistenteffortputforthbysociety.Toparticipate
    inmycommunity,IhavebegunworkingonmyUpstanderProjectforSemester2,whichwill
    leadintomyServiceLearningProjectandpotentiallyoutlinethebaseofmySeniorProjectat
    Blackstone.AfteridentifyingatopicthatIwaspassionateabout,Iwasabletofindanissue
    withinit.Comingfromamilitaryfamily,myinterestwaspiquedtremendouslyontheendless
    amountofissuesthatU.S.soldiersfeel.Eventhoughmydadhasneverhadanyknownissues
    uponreturningfromoverseasorbeingseparatedfromourfamily,therearemillionsofneglected
    soldiersforgottenorleftbehind.MyUpstanderProjectfocusesonthefactthatalargeportionof
    U.S.soldiersfeellonelyduetomissingoutonlifeoutsideoftheirbases,resultinginthem
    acquiringmentalhealthissuessuchasPTSD,depression,stressandanxiety.Tocomfortthose
    whohaveservedorarecurrentlyservingthiscountry,mypartnerandIhavechosentogive
    soldierstheattentiontheydeservethroughplanningtorequestthatstudentsatBACSsignupfor
    theAdoptaSoldierorganization,apenpalprogramallowingcivilianstointeractwithactive
    dutysoldiersthroughwritinglettersandemails.Afterayearofpenpalling,wewillaskfor
    donations,suchashealthandbeautysuppliesfromBlackstonefamiliestobedonatedtosoldiers
    overseas.Thegoalofourprojectistoshowsoldiersthatthereissomeonewhotrulycaresabout
    themandthesacrificestheyvemadetoserveourcountry.

    Overall,throughthecourseoftheyearIhavelearnedthatbecomingthechangeIwishto
    seeandwatchingaschangeoccursaretwoextremelydifferentconcepts.Ihavelearnedthis
    throughpowerfuldiscussionsandanexposuretomajorthemesbasedthroughoutthisyears
    units.
