FROM THE EDITOR

If candidates tell you they love

the poor, then they sure as hell
would want them to stay poor.

What FHMers
have been up to
this month

Stay with me on this.

The Comelec pegged the total number of registered voters for the 2016
National Elections at 55 million. An SWS survey made late last year showed
that, of the total number of registered voters, 59 percentor 32,450,000
votersconsidered themselves poor. Candidates winning top-tier victories do
so in the range of 15 million to 20 million votes, well within the power of the
poor vote.
So, if youre a politician-for-life, its in your best interest to get the poor vote.
Its easier with them. All you have to do is play the part of being maka-diyos,
matulungin, tapat, maaasahan (which is what the poor want, said an Institute
of Philippine Culture study reported by the Philippine Center for Investigative
Journalism as far back as 2004). As a voting bloc, less of them means less
votes, so it makes perfect sense to keep the voting poor, poor. Be their savior.
But they always have to be saved; you have to keep on saving them.
Im not saying they do not want to help the poor. I would like to believe that
public servants always start out with the best intentions. The point is this: In
the cacophony of image-building that is the 2016 elections, where everyone
loves the poor and has the answers to all their problems, we have to remain
skeptics. We cannot just believe what we hear or see. They are merely rhetoric
and always will be. Come election day, it is your intelligent assessment of each
candidates personality and capability that should determine your vote.
But we must not be disillusioned. In this, Im counting on that other vote:
the Youth vote. The Comelec says this voting bloc, ages 18 to 35, make up 37
percent of the electorate. Thats about 20 million of you. If you are what you
say you aresmart, savvy, and brimming with good vibesyoull deliver the
votes that will shape the future of our politics: one that doesnt rely on empty
rhetoric but on sound principles.

SALSA POOL PARTY

SAM IS BACK

Getting ready to throw that semi-ultimate

pool party! Thanks for the idea and the salsa
recipe, FHM ! Really enjoyed reading your
pool party article last month! Hope you can
write more fun stuff like that. Happy summer,
everyone!
xnickjagger, via Instagram

Thank you so much for bringing back the

gorgeous Sam Pinto, FHM ! Ive loved her
since her PBB days and my god that body
just keeps on getting better and better. I was
afraid that your rebranding was going to keep
Sam from showing off that awesome body of
hers but you guys found a way to make it look
classier but still keep it sexy. Hoping for more
awesome covers from you guys!

I really like the fact that FHM is working

with Ebe Dancel and Johnoy Danao. I really
love their music and they deserve a lot more
exposure than they get. Super great work on
the Troubadour feature on Ebe by the way,
sobrang idol ko siya. I had always wondered
where he got the inspiration for his songs. I
hope you get to work with Bullet Dumas soon
so the trio will finally be complete, ha ha!

Hey FHM , I actually liked the concept for

this months cover (but maybe its because
Im a beach bum and would really like to see
Sam at the beach for myself) but pants at the
beach really dont sit well with me. I mean,
I get that youre going for a classier image
and everything but sayang yung butt ni Sam!
Hope my comment reaches you! More power!

Nothing beats the joy of embarrassing an

old pal in a pride-filled game of one-on-one
basketball. Almost an entirely different ball
game than the usual five-on-five matches,
this type of duel requires players to harness
only their individual skills to trump the other.
And because its our lifes joy to become
king of the court, we sought the help of
The Prince Vince Hizon, former PBA player
and commissioner of the community-based
basketball league Filsports Basketball
Association. He was the floor director of
the recently concluded Red Bull King of the
Rock, an international one-on-one basketball
tournament. We wanted The Prince to give
us a few pointers on how to check the
unstoppable signature moves of some of our
favorite NBA and PBA cagers.

Terrence Romeo sizes up

some thought romeo would have a
hard time translating his collegiate
game to the pros, but his unrivalled
isolation play has left doubters in the
dust. hizon advises to stay low, keep
your weight back, and your hands up
to try and keep your balance while
keeping him from shooting over you.

Vic Manuel avoids a threesecond call with a nifty

under-goal stab

honestly, a physical match-up is out

of the question so just talk a lot of
smack and try to get under his skin.
Ask him if hes going to stay with
the cleveland cavaliers. Also, him
shooting foul shots (74 percent) is
better than an easy deuce, says hizon.

fajardo has his advanced skill set

and sheer dominance on full display.
top priority is not letting him get
deep position, says hizon. if he
does, you have no choice but to
body up and be tough. boxing out
should be your last option as he
would still be able to shoot.

DeMarcus Cousins shows

off the big man handles
and barrels down the lane
how do you defend a big man who
possesses the strength to bully his
way to the rack while still being able
to knock down perimeter shots? hizon
suggests you take two steps off and
pray that he shoots an outside jumper.
Also try to get inside his head and
have him ejected. cousins could have
been unstoppable if he would only
keep his head in the game.

manuel seems to adhere to the saying,

simplicity is key, using pure strength
and high basketball iQ to outplay his
opponents. [defend him] just like
how you would defend fajardo, but
requiring more muscle, says hizon.
manuel creates more scoring chances
in the paint, keep him out. stay one
step ahead of his offensive instincts.

there are times in life when you have

Its a scene from your worst
nightmare: The world has just
cleansed itself of humanity. It was
bound to happen. Mother Nature
has always found a way to rid itself
of unwanted guests, after all. Shes
always stood by the same promise
that dishwashing liquids also make:
she cleans 99.9 percent of germs.
But the human species is a
resilient bunch. Even if only a fraction
of a percent remains, you can expect
we wont go down that easily.
How exactly will humanity
survive, much less thrive, in harsher
environments? Lets take a cue from
Charles Darwin and analyze this
apocalyptic evolution through natural
selection. According to Darwin, its
the strong thatll be able to adapt to
their environment. In an atmosphere
as cruel as, say, desert heat 24/7 or
almost total darkness, what changes
would humanity take to adapt?

Desert everywhere
The world is like the Sahara
water is scarce, theres sand
everywhere, and the heat
is making you sweat your
balls off. Hirsutism, or the
excessive presence of human
skin, will be a favorable trait
here as well, but this time
for protection against the
sun. Humans will have very
efficient excretory organs
(kidneys, intestines, and sweat
glands) that can draw out most
of the moisture from whatever
it is we will be excreting. Think
of salt crystals for tears and
sweat, dry pellets for feces,
and super concentrated
urine or ammonia pellets,,
says Romeo Dizon, associate
professor of Biology in UP
Baguio. Passing stones
through pee? Wed rather live
in a nuclear winter.

Life after Mad Max

The world jusT ended. how will humaniTy survive

in an enTirely differenT habiTaT?

02

03

Second Ice age

Lopsided days and

nights

Dizon says hirsutism will

be the sexiest trait. Feet
will be broader to tread on
snow and thicker skinned
to insulate the body from
the cold, he says. We will
develop a hormone that
counteracts brain freeze the
same way insulin regulates
blood sugar. Your ideal
partner in this world would
be a sexy yeti.

Imagine living in the North or

South Pole where sunlight
lasts only for a couple of
hours, followed by total
darkness for the rest of the
day. It would be an interesting
change in routine, right? Now
imagine living like that for the
rest of your life. Dizon likens
this lifestyle to that body
clock mutation known
as the Call Center
Way, complete
with call center
agent-issued eyes
(like headlights,
to absorb as much
daylight as possible) and
ears (larger, to help navigate
through darkness). Coffee
and cigarettes will still be
essentials, we reckon.

A waterworld

An animal-less world
Ever played The Last of
Us? Its a survival horror
video game set in a postapocalyptic United States
where you fight, among
others, cannibals infected
with some kind of fungus.
An-an and alipunga to the
rescue! They turn savior,
in this world, by taking on
the role of plant or fungal
symbionts. Our waste
products will not be excreted
but will be directed to watch
over these plants [that will
be growing on our skin]
for their nutrition, says
Dizon. These plants will
be photosynthesizing (or
degrading our wastes into
simple molecules in the case
of fungi) and providing
our food. All we need to
do is get as much sun as
possible. Question is, will we
look more like the Swamp
Monster or Groot? Either
way, were not going to look
pretty.

Contrary to what you might

think, we wont develop gills,
although our features would
have to become aquatic.
Dizon says we would most
likely be closer to dolphins
and whales in terms of
appearance. Expect fused
legs that end [in] a tail and
arms that end in webbed
fingers. Hair will most likely
go out of fashion as it
increases drag [in] water.
Dizon says. Well end up
with streamlined skin, and
probably a bit of fat for
insulation. Sorry, Waterworld
fans, it looks like Kevin
Costner got the look of the
Mariner wrong.

07
Living entirely
underneath the earth
With the surface world
completely uninhabitable,
humanity will be forced to
live underground. What would
we look like? To sum it up,
imagine mole rats the size of
a regular humanblind, naked,
and crawling on all fours
instead of walking upright.
Dizon thinks developing
wildly flared nostrils will help
us better smell our fellow
mutants (and possibly be
instrumental in picking our
possible mate). Love is
truly blind, but probably not
pleasant-smelling.

06
Air is toxic
Dizon proposes two
possibilities that the
human body will filter
out the toxicity in the
air. One, we will develop
wide nostrils with thick,
bushy nose hair that
produce boogers the size
of baseballs. The other
possibility would be to
grow an additional organ
to filter the air. Expect
highly toxic and lethal
farts, Dizon warns.

Because youre a legit
audiophile or some hipster
dude who loves music

Anyone who was born before 1990

understands that some of what falls under
nostalgia could also simply fall under the
category of common sense. Maybe I am just
old, or old-fashioned, but I forever adore the
experience of holding an album in my hands, perusing lyrics
or album details as if they were clues to some other magic
place, relishing with certitude, Mine.
With the file-sharing boom, prescients with their
nose on the money predicted the eventual death of the
compact disc, the sheer abundance of convenience for
nothing and art for free would demolish the music industry.
And they were right. But only in the sense that it would
be demolished as it existed then, as happens in every
revolution, a change in the status quo creates another. Bad
things happened: musicians now need to tour extensively
to make crappy money. Good things also happened: more
choices for everyone.
But probably nobody imagined that there would be a
whole segment of the market that would now long for all
the other things that died in that post-millennial revolution
of convenience and instant gratification. These people now
long for the experience of holding something tangible in

their hands, the joy of holding the

object of ones love. It turns out that
not everybody loves convenience.
Jann Angara of Dub Temple
Records says: The vinyl covers
look so cool and you have to sit and
listen to the whole thing. You get to
experience the albums as a whole
thing, in the order that the artists
intended.
Some people want to earn their
experience of a work of art. We enjoy
holding something that somebody
crafted with their hands. We adore
the fact that we found it through
some cunning, some effort and a lot
of love. And they are willing to pay
good money for this experience.
In hindsight, we go back to a
simple marketing principle: variety
creates competition. In this case,
the vinyl experience trumps other
products because of its very

otherness. Its claim to the market

is precisely because it isnt free and
it isnt digital. Any true fan of music
would go back to that purer, snugger
vinyl experience because that is half
the fun of it.
Technologies will evolve, and
what was unimaginable then can
be speculated as probable now.
Someday in the not-too-distant
future, they will come up with a way to
bottle music in an innovative way.
Its no longer science fiction to think
that in the future, a record could exist
in capsule form, to dissolve in drink,
and respond to microchips in our
bodies that will be turned on. But then
there will always be people who will
prefer the original experience, that
irreplaceable, purer sort of fun.

1984 is 2016, and 2017, and so on until
the end of days.
This month, we will elect a new

It is much easier to begin a book rather

When you allow an industry
to churn out five comic book
blockbusters a year, you lose
the right to hate critics (or rabid,
diehard, opinionated, and above all
else, unforgiving movie fans) for
ripping Zack Snyder a new asshole.
That person was entrusted with a
mythology. As Spideys Uncle Bens
homily goes: With great power comes
great responsibility. Responsibility to
elevate the genre. To add a dialogue
to the canon that makes the comics
storyline relevant. To make a good
fucking movie, regardless of creative
liberties taken.
Once weve regressed into an
audience content with mediocrity
being shoved down our throats, icons
like Batman, Superman, and the
X-Men, fighters of injustice heralded
for their phenomenal capabilities, will
lose their power and relevance.
Then, we will all really need some
saving.

Theres a reason for this. No other Pinoy
is hovering in the boxing horizon to be
even half of a big deal as Pacquiao yet.
So what else can we do but immerse
ourselves in the UFC?
Boxing is as artsy (and as fancy)
as any sport could get with millions of
dollars for prize fighters. But without
a Filipino bet throwing jabs in the ring,
weve realized that we long for more
action. We want to see some blood on

Sure, Mayweather may very well be
the epitome of a boxer embracing the
essence of boxing with his style; he is
just not that entertaining.
Think Rousey. McGregor. Diaz.
These UFC fighters are as entertaining
running their mouths at weigh-ins
as fighting inside the Octagon. We
dont witness dragging moments
of opponents hugging; only nasty
ground and pound for knockouts or
submissions. Now that is entertaining.
We have found heroes in boxing, but
with Pacquiao soon to hang his gloves
for good, Pinoys will have to get their
dose of ringed chaos from the UFC.

College Guy meets Classy College Girl.
They fight all the timeover several
yearsbecause of their different
perspectives on sex and friendship.
Until they become best friends. And one
night, they have sex. Its confusing as
hell the morning after so they grow
apart. But they eventually realize
theyre in love with each other and
make up on New Years Eve. The end.
Theres also: Bad Boy goes out with Bad
Girl. Both of them hate the world but
theres mutual attraction there. Bad Boy
and Bad Girl fall in love. Then Bad Girl
discovers Bad Boy only asked her out
that first time because he made money
out of it. Bad Girl becomes Man-hating
Bad Girl. Bad Boy, who has fallen in
love hard, gives Bad Girl a guitar as
a peace offering. Apology obviously
accepted. The end.
And another one: Regular Guy is
in love with Popular Girl. But Regular
Guys Best Friend Whos A Girl tells him
hes too dull for Popular Girl to notice
him (because Best Friend Whos A Girl
is secretly in love with Regular Guy).
But Regular Guy still asks out Popular
Girl and she says yes. They go to a
party where Regular Guy realizes he
loves Best Friend Whos A Girl, after all.
Popular Girl lets him go, tells him shed
rather be alone for the right reasons.
Regular Guy runs after Best Friend
Whos A Girl and they walk, arms
entwined, in the moonlight. The end.
Its not that writers of rom-coms
didnt have any imagination back then.
And its not that these stories are awful.
(Theyre actually beloved classics.
Google these, kids: When Harry Met
Sally, 10 Things I Hate About You,
Some Kind of Wonderful.) These writers
just cashed in on peoples love for
stories that made them feel happy about
the emotional state of the world.
And then in Manila, indie romcoms happened. A new crop of
indie filmmakers began to take
unconventional approaches to update
the romantic comedy scene. For a
younger, worldlier, more tech-savvy
audience, these artists raised the bar
of the Pinoy rom-com with beautifully
shot cinematography, snappy dialogue,
perfect soundtracks, and, best of all,
characters who didnt fit inside a box.

Dan Villegas, an award-winning

director (and also a cinematographer),
is one of those indie filmmakers blazing
a trail. With his man bun and tattoos,
Dan might look more like the drummer
of an alternative rock band than a
weaver of romantic tales.
But he is a storyteller. Always
be my Maybe, #WalangForever, The
Breakup Playlist, English Only Please,
Mayohanthese are just five of his over
20 film credits, and each one is told
in the voice of someone who obviously
doesnt subscribe to the conventional
way of thinking. (Well, mostly. Because
sometimes, you do have to indulge
the way of the kilig.) Case in point:
For someone who lives and breathes
romantic comedies, youd think Dan has
no problem figuring out women.
Wrong. Hes totally clueless, like the
rest of the straight male population.
Theres no formula on how to relate
to women and understand them 100
percent, Dan says. He has no idea
that with this simple statement, he has
dashed the romantic hopes of half the
men in the world.
Dont worry. Women know youre
confusedand they forgive you.

Any MMK moments in your life that

would be perfect for a movie plot?
Lahat naman tayo may MMK moments
sa buhay. Sino bang tao ang wala? But
I had just one goal, anywayto become
a cinematographer. So kinaya ko lahat
ng hirap.
How difficult was it, exactly?
Ang hirap sabihin sa magulang na
ang gusto kong gawin, sa arts, which
many people think doesnt pay well. My
mom was supportive from the start,
but it was hard to convince my dad that
it would work. Hes not a big fan of
movies. Hes a civil structure engineer;
he designs oil platforms. Sobrang talino
sa math; unfortunately, I didnt inherit
that. Neither did my sister, whos a
successful photojournalist. Pareho
kaming bobo sa math.
But despite that, you were able to
make your first movieMayohanas
its director and producer.
Yes, pero nabaon ako sa utang for five
years. I had to fund it myself since I
didnt have a producer. So tipong lahat
ng savings ko, nakuha ko na. Umutang
na ko sa parents ko. Pati sa mga titong
minsan ko pa lang yata nakikita,
yung mga halos hindi ko kilala. Tapos
kulang pa rin. The film went super
over-budget. When I finally computed
the cost properlyfuck, ang laki! Para
akong nagpaaral ng college student. So

nag-bank loan pa ko. I finished paying

it all back just last year.
All worth it, though, right?
Oo naman. I just thought of all
those loans I made as a five-year
investment. One of the PAs in Star
Cinema saw Mayohan and loved the
cinematography. So siya yung nagrecommend sa kin kay Direk Cathy
[Garcia-Molina], and thats how I got
my first break with mainstream [films].
I got the directing job for English
Only Please because the producer liked
Mayohan, too.
You bounce between being a director
and a cinematographer. Which one do
you enjoy doing more?
I like doing both, but cinematography
is my first love.
Which movies made you want to
become a cinematographer?
Requiem for a Dream. In the Mood for
Love. Spectre. Her. Norte. Grabe ang
photography nung mga yun.
So how did you break into the scene?
The key is to find a couple of directors
na ikaw ang priority. Directors,
writers, photographersyou can just
make your movie, write your script,
shoot your photos, then submit [your
work] to festivals, writing contests,
or magazines so more people can see
your work. But cinematographers have
to wait for a text from a producer or
director saying, May pelikula tayong
gagawin. Kung walang trabaho ang
director mo, wala ka ring trabaho.
Obviously, you found your director.
For almost two years, nakabuntot lang
ako kay Odie Flores who did indies,
TVCs. Patanung-tanong ako, Paano ba
gamitin yang ilaw na yan? And thats
how I learned. Eventually, I figured,
Sino ba yung director na ako yung
first choice as director of photography?
Di ba ako rin? So sabi ko, sige, ako
na rin ang magiging director of
photography sa sarili kong stuff.
How was it having Direk Marilou
(Diaz-Abaya) as one of your college
professors?
Shes one of my mentors. I remember
the first day of class. Pagpasok namin
sa class niya, unang una niyang sinabi,
Leave your ego at the door. Walang
room ang kayabangan sa klaseng ito
at sa industriya na to. Number two: do
not impress me with talent. Maraming
magaling diyan. Impress me with
discipline and passion, commitment
and professionalism. Nag-stick sa kin
yon. Thats also how she runs a set
everyones equal.

DAN VILLEGAS

Movie-critic wannabes usually

describe indie films as intelligent and
commercial films as low on IQ. What
do you say to that?
Its a useless, old argument, and just a
waste of time and energy. I dont see it
as indie versus mainstream. For me, its
more important to ask whether a film is
ready for consumption [by audiences],
and if it fulfills its goal. Is its goal to
scare you or make you laugh? Napatili
ka ba sa takot? Napaihi ka ba sa kilig?
Hindi ka ba mapakali sa suspense? Ano
ba yung goal ng pelikula? Thats what
I look for.
Magbuhat-bangko tayo. What makes
Filipino filmmakers world-class?
We are sensitive people. Ma-feel.
Storytelling gives us catharsis. I
remember sociology class in college.
This Caucasian guy was wondering
why, at wakes, the first thing we
[Filipinos] say to the bereaved is, Ano
nangyari? So the bereaved will have
to tell the story [of their loss] over and
over again. Foreigners would say, Why
ask? Why force them to relive the pain
over and over again? Pero tayo, hindi
na natin naiisip. For Filipinos, its
cathartic to let out the pain by talking
about it.
Why do you think it matters to some
people that a director is a woman and
not a man?
Hindi ko alam sa kanila. Eh ano naman
kung babae siya o kahit gay? Whether
youre a man or a woman, gay or
straight, it shouldnt matter. What should
matter is the movie that you make.
Have you ever seen any
discrimination happen on set?
Wala. Whats nice about the Philippine
filmmaking industry is that there are
more women filmmakers than there
are men. When you talk to filmmakers
in other countries, you realize ang
lakas ng discrimination sa kanila. Dito,
parang wala. We are a matriarchal
society, at least when it comes to
producing TV and films.
Do you ever use your friends as
inspiration for the characters in your
films?
Of course, but with permission. For
example, one of the pick-up lines in
Always Be My Maybe was inspired by
my friend. I asked him, When youre
trying to get laid, ano yung tawid na
line mo from just getting coffee or a
beer to actually getting laid? Kasi lagi
namang kailangan mo ng transition
line na tipong, Lipat na tayo. Yung
friend ko, ang style niya, sasabihin niya,
Nagugutom ako, eh. His date will
say, Sige, kain tayo. Ano gusto mong
kainin? Gusto ko sisig. Sige, saang
sisig place ang alam mo? Ang sisig
place na alam ko, sa Victoria Court.
And that works?
One hundred percent batting average
raw si gago doon sa line na yon. Yun nga
tanong ko: How do you make it fucking
work? Its so pervy. Walang ka-finessefinesse. Sabi niya, hindi naman daw niya

ibabato kapag hindi tumatawa yung girl.

Maghihintay muna siya ng signs na
malamang on the same page sila.
How do you create such realistic
characters for your films?
Before you make a film, you create
a character map that shows the
progression of the character in the
film. So you know the journey of the
character from the start of the film to
the end. What I do is, I base it on one
person I know so I can more or less
predict how the character will react to
situations. Yung approach namin ni
Tonette [Jadaone], the experiences of our
characters are really close to what our
friends in real life are going through.
Some people find it hard being in the
same industry as their significant
other. How do you and your girlfriend
Tonette handle it, shooting That
Thing Called Tadhana together,
for example?
With some arguments here and there.
The bottom line for both of us, anyway,
was to make a beautiful film. When
Tonette was writing the script for
Tadhana, may mga comments ako

na, Hindi sasabihin ng lalaki yan.

Because she had a tendency to write in
the female voice, whether it was Mace
[Angelica Panganiban] or Anthony
[JM de Guzman] speaking. So she told
me to do the Tadhana journey with
her; shed be Mace and Id be Anthony.
Sinimulan namin yung dialogue sa
Manila; pagdating namin ng Baguio,
magkaaway na kami.
It seems like youve found your niche
in making rom-coms. Are you planning
on playing with other genres?
Im a fan of love stories. Ma-cheesefest
akong tao. Pero gusto kong gumawa
rin ng action. Gusto kong gumawa
ng Pinoy 80s action film, pare. Yung
tipong, Isang bala ka lang. Horror, too.
As in, a movie so roller-coaster scary,
like Exorcist. Yung paglabas mo hindi

What I know about women

strangely, despite his work, dan Villegas is still

mystified by women (just like you)

Why do their periods get

in sync whenever theyre
together?
Has science ever proven
this? The effect of this weird
thing is, pag mainit ang ulo ng
isa, mainit ang ulo ng lahat.
There was a time when my
ex-girlfriend used to live with
me. So that time, my mom
was visiting from the US.
Tapos sister ko, kasama rin
namin. Pagbaba ko pa lang sa
umaga, ang init na ng ulo ng
lahat, wala pa kong ginagawa.
Aalis talaga ko; Id get my
coffee somewhere else.
Why am I always wrong
and theyre always right?
Sala sa init, sala sa lamig
lagi. Even if I grew up in a
household full of women, I
still havent figured this one
out. For example, waking up
in the morning. Just waking
up, galit na sa kin. Buti
sana kung the night before,
umuwi ako ng lasing tapos
winasak ko yung buong
bahay. Shed have the right
to be mad at me. Pero hindi.
Umuwi ako nang matino.
Natulog lang. Paggising ko,
ibang mundo na. Lahat ng
gawin ko, mali.

Why dont they say what

they mean?
Halimbawa, Ill say, Babe,
lalabas ako with my friends
mamaya, ha. Inuman lang.
Guy bonding. Papayag siya,
pero na-feel ko na ayaw niya
talaga. She just wont say it
because she doesnt want to
box me in. Eh, wala naman
talaga akong planong
pumunta sa girly bar or
wherever. Iinom lang talaga
ako kasama ng barkada
ko. So because I get the
feeling that she doesnt really
like the idea of me going
out, Ill just decide to stay
home. Tapos magagalit siya,
Bakit hindi ka tumuloy?
Naramdaman ko na parang
ayaw mong lumabas ako,
eh. So dito na lang ako sa
bahay. Magvi-video games
na lang ako. Hindi, pumunta
ka na. Okay lang talaga.
Masaya rin ako sa video
games. Hindi, umalis ka na.
Wala talaga akong panalo,
pare.

Why do they have to

consider so many things
when answering just
simple questions?
Like, are you hungry?
Ang lalaki, simple lang.
Oo, gutom ako. Saan
mo gustong kumain?
Japanese. Diretso. One is
to one. Black and white. Ang
babae, huhulaan mo pa kung
ano talaga ang ibig nilang
sabihin. Kahit ano'ng isagot
nila, kailangan mo pang
isipin, Saan ba ito galing?
Why should it sometimes
matter whose fault it is?
Most of the time it shouldnt
really matter whose fault
it is. At the end of the day,
kailangan lang may magsabi
ng sorry. Kasi yung iba,
nangyayari na, yung goal
nila is to avoid fighting.
For me, thats not normal.
Tonette and I sometimes
get into long debates about,
for example, a movie we
just watched. Hindi ko
nagustuhan. Bakit? Eh ako
umiiyak na ko. Inantok nga
ako eh. What!? Minsan,
tatawid pa sa ibang bagay.

like their predecessors, the kids of

sensitive guy. says 26-year-old graphic

are not scared at all to discuss their
emotions.
But 24-year-old photographer rennell

and beyond personal emotions. i think
being sensitive is to go beyond yourself.
lalabas ka sa sarili mo to know whats

compassion.
which brings us back to: emotions and

03 Gold

CheT FaKer
For Gen-Xers the word
love came to hold such
gravitas, that they learned
to avoid using it until it
was absolutely necessary.
Here, Chet Faker slowly
sings about feeling love
thats made with gold. At
one point, Faker admits
defeat: Its gotta be love,
I said it.

04 Free

Cody simpson
Its like Jack Johnson
but with a little more life
and a little more groove.
With its clear admiration
for a cool and carefree
woman, Free is almost a
necessary inclusion. You
like her style, and youre

With You

sun Kil moon

Its almost like Before
Sunrise except they
didnt have much to
say. The romanticism
of missed connections,
of a shared kiss, and a
cigarette, plus a nifty
inclusion of snail mail in
this slow and quiet song
makes it sincere and
sexy. Bam!

In case youre missing out on Crwn and Jess
Connelly, allow us to bring you up to speed.
Theyre local independent musiciansCrwns
a DJ/producer and Jess Connelly is a singer
whose collaboration in 2015 has become hella
successful, its hard to see a gig without one or

melodic contrast to Crwns rap. There is uncertainty
and longing on her part, and an admirable talk of
The Future on his. Steadily brill.

lana del rey

We can't decide what we like best about
Lana Del Reys song: its high atmosphere,
its seductive yet humorous lines, or its music
video that features Father John Misty and
Del Rey dancing ballet. Hot tip: Play this late

Bon iver
Ah, the sick sensitivity of
Bon Iver is on full display
on this song. Taken off the
bands 2007 classic For
Emma, Blindsided is slow,
solitary, and reeking of so
much wanting. FYI: The
entire record was written
in a cabin after Bon Iver
frontman Justin Vernon
went through a year of
breakups and illness.

Jason mraZ
Well, okay, he begins this
song by insulting his girls

All That You Are

B.p. valenZuela
The signature sparse atmospherics of B.P. Valenzuela is in full display on All That
You Are. Its almost an echo of the loneliness of that empty space in your bed, that
spacious soundscape of the song. In it, the young Filipino musician talks about
adoring all of her beloved, wanting to hear the beloveds voice, and feel merciful love.

11 The Light

EASY LISTENING
FOR HARD MEN

Common
The song is reported
to be a love letter from
Common to his thengirlfriend, R&B singer
Erykah Badu. It has killer
lines that will showcase
your sensitivity: the need
to communicate, the
belief in heaven and God,
your plans of a family,
and so on.

One look at any of Andi Eigenmanns social media accounts

and youd know: we are dealing with someone hip.
Perfectly cropped selfies, a photo with a
pineapple on her headAndis Instagram
page scrolls down like a study on
Generation Ys apparent fixation on the
unconventional. She captions her IG
photos with such phrases as, Touch the
earth and feel the earth touch you.
She describes herself in different
ways on social media: dirt worshipper,
isda, lamok, a mermaid who flies. If Andi
were born 30 years earlier, shed have
been tagged as a flower child; a hippie.
Shed have walked barefoot with flowers in
her long hair, flashing the peace sign at
random strangers, taking impromptu road
trips in a beat-up VW Combi, and sitting at
the beach with her equally hippie friends
watching the sun set.
Oh wait. She still does that. On a whim,
she recently went to Calaguas with friends
not knowing it was 10 hours away from
Manila. (But all the pagod was wiped away
when we got there; the beauty of the island
was breathtaking.) Just conversing with
her would show you that Andi takes pride
in not being a member of conventional
youth, Andi (who considers herself as not
so young anymore at 25) peppers our
conversation with inspirational tidbits that
all basically point to what sounds like her
life philosophy: You only live once.

Mainstream is certainly not her cup of tea.

But curiously, almost 10 years ago, Andi
made a decision that put her right smack
in the middle of mainstream Philippine
culture: she joined the showbiz industry.
You couldnt really blame her, being
part of the multi-awarded and immensely
talented Eigenmann clan. Her parents are
Jaclyn Jose and the late Mark Gil. There is
Tita Cherie Gil and Tito Michael de Mesa.
Never mind that it was a world her family
didnt want her to enter. They didnt say no,
but they didnt encourage me, either. They tried
to convince me to put college first and become a
lawyer or something. Yet Andi faced showbiz
full on, and the glitterati of TV and film
embraced her as if she were one of them.
Soon after, she was. She sharpened her
performing chops as a Houseplayer (guest) in
Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus and as
a Myx VJ. And then came the big one: Andi
got cast as the lead in the primetime teleserye
Agua Bendita where she played twins Agua
and Bendita. (Mainstream Pinoy TV. What
can we say?) That threw me on a 180-degree
turn, says Andi about the fame her part
brought. I felt like I was on every magazine
cover, every billboard on Edsa. I really loved
it, and I embraced it. But at the same time,
it was a struggle for me. I felt like I was
battling with something inside me.

Right there was the rub. Andi,

contrary to what showbiz might say,
has a terrible case of stage fright.
I may come off a certain way in media,
but in real life, Im a very shy person,
she admits. Talking with you, only
with you and not the rest of the team,
is way better. Because with so many
people listening in, it makes me so
much more awkward. (Were actually
not all alone in the hipster caf that
Andi picks for our interview. Her
model-esque friends are upstairs and at
the table behind ours. But they are her
people; no awkward moments when the
squad is around.)
Ironically, it took a controversy
something that changed Andis life
foreverto give her some breathing
space, so to speak. When Andi got
pregnant five years ago, her career
had to take a backseat. As well as,

temporarily, the eternal ray of sunshine

that went wherever Andi went.
Of course it was hard, she says,
tears pooling in her eyes. I didnt know
what the future held for me. I became
very sad, confused, and lonely for a
while. But eventually, I told myself, (and
here, she points upward) He has never
let me down before. What kept me
strong was that thought and knowing
that I did what I believed was right.
Today, four-year-old Elliea carbon
copy of Andihas a huge following on
Instagram, thanks to her famous moms
fans. One post of Ellies photo gets an
average of 11,300 likes. But thats not
why Andi is in awe of this little lady.
Fun-sized na, bestie mo na, sobrang
talino pa, at comedian pa. What more
could you ask for? Andi gushes. Any
mother would.
Hindsight is awesome. As Andi
recalls the moment she became a
mother, we get the feeling that those
nine months werent spent just growing
a baby in her belly. She got introspective
and filtered her life up until then.
I never was really sure about doing
mainstream from the beginning, she
says. And now that I know myself
better, I know what I want for myself.
Actingmy passion for that will never
go away. Film. Art. Travel.
On that note, Part Two of Andis
life began. First on the agenda: the
69th Cannes Film Festival. When Andi
finally figured out what she wanted to
do, one of the first things she did was
agree to star in her first indie film,
whose cast included mom Jaclyn. Ma
Rosa is about an impoverished couple
who uses their sari-sari store as cover
for selling drugs. The gritty topic must
have piqued the interest of Europe: Ma
Rosa beat out over 1,000 entries and
has made the cut to compete against 38
other films from all over the world. By
the way, it was directed by Cannes Best
Director Brilliante Mendoza.
Its a dream come true, says Andi,
speaking for all of us. Ive always
been into art films, so indie is really
what I love. I have a burning passion
for it. She leaves for Cannes with her
mom and director middle of this month
to represent their indie effort in the
international film community. What
were you doing when you were 25?
With this newfound priority list,
Andi has become a risk taker. So second
on her to-do list is: Conquer the stage.
For someone with almost crippling
stage fright, the stage is probably as
frightening as an Asian horror flick. But
Andi is eager to do it for the different
sense of fulfillment it will give her. Stage
will show how good you are and how
dedicated you are as an artist, she says.
And Im all about just always getting
over my fear and trying to be better.

...walked off the beaten path with my bare feet and my soul
has never shone brighter.

Speaking of
overcoming fear,
we present to you
one fantastic
offshoot of
this magazine
reformatting
effort. I did hear
that FHM was
reformatting,
Andi says.
After some tense weeks of waiting for
her decision, she finally gave the nod.
She was appearing on our cover! I feel
like Im at the point in my career where
I can show what I can do without so
many restrictions.
And what can you do when there are
no limitations, we ask.
Well, its always worth it to take
risks, Andi says, refusing to take our
bait. Appearing in FHM is one of the
risks I want to take. Anyway, youve
changed your format so I know it wont
be so scary. Look at this as a kind of
pre-celebration of my 10th year in
showbiz.
Apart from FHM Cover Girl and
Representative to Cannes, another of
the new (-ish) titles that Andi has taken
on is blogger/influencer. Begun to ward
away boredom when she was pregnant,
Andis blogentitled Mermaid
Wandershas evolved into a kind of
environmental advocacy. Its there that
Andi chronicles her many travels. This
year alone, shes already been to Bohol,
Calaguas, La Union, Puerto Galera,
Mindoro, and Boracay. And shes set
to leave, afterahemFrance, for
Zambales, Baguio, and Sagada. She
doesnt just travel, however. Thats
what sets me apart from other travel
bloggers, she says. I lean towards the
more naturist side; Im all about being
eco-friendly and supporting advocacies
that help protect our planet.
This blog is included in Andis effort
to streamline her work. Yung klase ng
art na gusto kong gawin, yung art na
minamahal ko, eto na siya. I married

them into one thing. Hindi ko naman

pala kailangang mamili ng isa lang. Now,
nagagawa ko na silang lahat.
It does sound like this is one tough
lady, yes? A lot of people would always
refer to me as a strong person. But what
they dont know is that Im not the only
one. Every single person who lasts in the
showbiz industry is strong in their own
way. She has no qualms about traveling
alone or going down the koboy path on
her trips precisely because her industry
has taught her to take life by the balls.
Andi has learned the magic of going
her own way. As she writes in one of her
Instagram posts: Walked off the beaten
path with my bare feet and my soul has
never shone brighter. Definitely more, and
much deeper, than the Andi you know.

Im all about just always getting over my

fear and trying to be better.

It may seem like it, but putting all those characters into
office on May 9 is not a joke. And because you belong
to the 37 percent of the general voting population who
are considered the youth vote (18-35-year-olds, many
of you first timers, no doubt), well make the exercise
meaningful to you by explaining what exactly we should
expect from every person we elect in office, what
happens on voting day, andlets focus on the real

our journalistic principles. But we can advise that to

arrive at that one vote, think about something that

concerns you the most and see how these wannabe
presidents intend to solve your problem. We help
you on this part. If youre convinced, then your choice
will have been easier. But truth is, it wont be. our
elections are based on personality, not on agenda
and personality is the last thing you can judge
objectively. Hence the battle for image in their ads.
You just have to choose as best you can. our next
advice is to make them damn accountable for it. How?
Its been shown that social media feeds can force
people to take action. You know what to do

THE JOB
We break down the duties of the
officials youll be voting for this

The President delegate certain
powers to people that will
comprise his cabinet. He/she will
also be in-charge of allocating
the budget which makes it VERY
important that you get an idea of
what the candidates plan to do
with YOUR MONEY. Experience
tells us, feelings shouldn't dictate
matters of the wallet.

If you have successfully

registered as a voter, you
will just have to bring your

should be available at

years. Dream job? We think so.

Senators have the primary job of

legislating laws. They hold hearings
to discuss matters concerning
public interest. Now, you wouldnt
vote for a person who cant even
answer simple interview questions
regarding her stand on pertinent
issues of the country, would you?
No? Yes? With reservations? Pills!

First things first: [Voters]

registration is key. Like,

you have gone inactive

have not updated your

Party-list Representatives are

much like governors, party-list
representatives (usually from the
marginalized sector) earn their
seat in the congress to let other
people know the problems their
specific sector faces and how the

can help them solve it.

Governors/Representatives
are literally the peoples
representatives in the congress
and they should pass on the
qualms of the people to be heard
in a national arena. They get a vote
when deciding what bills get turned
into laws, that is, if theyre actually
present during the meetings.

Binay and Duterte ALWAYS use

Makati and Davao as examples in
their platforms to show people how
the city developed under their
rule. Mayors supervise all projects,
programs, and government
transactions that happen in their
cities or municipalities.

Councilors can potentially be

responsible for changes that

You've got your problems.

My concern is...

My father always complains that

he just isnt earning enough. He
makes about P20,000 a month
but he says taxes take a big
chunk out of it. We need him to
bring home more of his salary.

My concern is
I want fast internet

BINAY: Free Wi-Fi in the
whole country! The internet
will be a basic service,
no longer a value-added
service. He will also put up
an Information Technology
department whose only job
is to make sure everyone
in the Philippines has highspeed internet.
DUTERTE: Id talk to the
telecommunications people
and ask, Ano bang problema

POE: The internet is just

like a highway. It is a conduit

to wake up to get ready. dont even get me started
about going home. Im not asking for muchI just
want to get to my school faster (and not have to
wake up so early)

ROXAS: You should pay

attention to what telcom
firms promise in their ads. If
they say, minimum of, that
means so many hours of the
period must be at that rate.
SANTIAGO: Allocate
budget for the development
of shared internet

BINAY
What the Philippines needs is an
enlightened foreign policy. He will

DUTERTE

ROXAS
We will continue to pursue our claims

SANTIAGO

BINAY

to go. Binay says the
BPo industry could
eventually give jobs

He will also boost
the agricultural,

SANTIAGO

DUTERTE
He will create business
islands instead of a

the Philippines, just like
how singapore does it.
This way, Pinoys wont

First things first: Its perfectly okay to not know anything

about cars when youre buying your first car. You have the
moneythe guy who keeps talking about horsepower and
torque and shit doesnt. Youre the man.
Most guys lalo na kung hindi car guy, itsura ang
basehan ng pagbili, says Pio rodriguez, owner of Urban
Elite Autoworks, a shop specializing in car customization in
Libis, Quezon City. No one is going to fault you for wanting
to buy a certain car because it comes in a color similar to
Ferrari red.
But that doesnt mean you have to be stupid. If youre
really buying, you have to be smart with your purchase.
Cars are generally in the top five most expensive
expenses people will make in their life, explains Botchi
santos, consumer editor of Top Gear Philippines.
do your research before you visit any showroom. Car
dealerships and their agents will always try to oversell you
and have a tendency to give you a mountain of useless
information thats often taken out of context, says santos.
By doing due diligence, you won't let tie-wearing sales guy
talk you into a bad deal.
Next, always take them on a test drive.
Youll have a first-hand feel of the
engine power, how it responds,

and how fun the car is to drive. If a dealership doesnt

allow you to test drive, go to another that will let you, says
Paulo subido, associate editor of Top Gear Philippines.
Then, look at your finances. Its amazing how easy it is
to take out a car loan these daysif your credit is good, itll
take less than an hour. dealerships offer low downpayment
that can go as low as P8,000, all-in packages (including free
insurance on the first year, free chattel mortgage, etc.) and
doodads on top of that. But there is always the fine print you
have to read. As you shop for cars, shop around for banks
as well. The smaller, newer banks usually offer better
deals at lower overall interest rates versus bigger, more
established banks, explains santos.
Finally, never settle. When choosing a car, you should
go for one that tugs at your heart, the one you know you're
going to be happy with, says subido.
Because youre buying, were showcasing the best cars
out there thats yours for the taking. Check them all out
and drive home in your first car. Astig!

The size of a mans sedan suggests his financial

status. Big-time executives usually own full-sized
sedans. Middle management workers own something
slightly smaller, and compact sedans are usually what
first-time car buyers go for.
Technology, size, and ride differ depending on what
kind of sedan you choose. Its just really a matter of
choice, depending on what youre looking for in terms
of size and features, and what you can afford, says
Dela cruz. Prices for this variety of vehicle starts at
around P800,000 and above, depending on size.
If ever you get bit by the customization bug, sedans
are a good choice to take apart. The more popular
the model you choose, the more body kits and go-fast
parts are available in the market, Rodriguez says. Of
course, its best to do this after your new car warranty
expires so you dont void it.

Pickup trucks are the perfect vehicle if your work or business needs you
to haul stuff all the time. You can easily sit five people in them and have
all that flat bed space that can carry a whole host of heavy things. They
are also typically higher than most vehiclesmaking it a good option of
you live in flood prone areas.
But dont make the mistake of buying one just because driving a truck
makes you look more maangas. If you do a lot of city driving, and need
to constantly do a lot of short drives, a pick-up will be noticeably more
tiring to drive, warns Santos. After all, trucks often dont steer as light
and are sizeablemaking parking it pretty much a tedious process.
If youre the outdoorsy type though or have a business that has you
hauling stuff all the time, then you should definitely invest in a pickup.
Aside from being versatile, most of them are diesel so running them is
cheaper due to lower diesel fuel costs, says Santos.

Prepare for the long game

You may have saved up enough for the downpayment
and know where youll get the monthly payouts, but thats
not where car costs end. There will be required servicing
for your vehicle while its under warrantywhich means
youll have to take it to the casa. That usually costs more
than your average talyer. Ask your sales agent to talk to
a service adviser so you can have an idea of the average
costs of maintenance servicing for your chosen car,
suggests Santos.
Insurance is usually free as part of your financing deal,
but it does need to be renewed after a certain time period.
Comprehensive insurance premiums are roughly 5 percent
of the cars total market value, explains Santos. So make
sure you save up for that. While youre at it, get one with
acts of God coverage. It might cost a bit more but should
there be a flash flood, typhoon, or earthquake that damagers
your ride, youll have a backup for the ensuing repairs.

THe real deal:
Being a single income family in our country is
no walk in the park (unless you own a park).
Kay Bunagan of Better Steps Psychology
explains that culture has long dictated that
men are providers who bring home the days
hunt, while the mother nurtures the young.
While thats ultimately okay, there will
sometimes be pressure to keep working even

though you just want to spend time with your

kids. Theres also the mind-numbing pressure
attributed to staying at home and wanting
a break from Elmo videos on YouTube. She
says, Quitting our jobs for anything is still a
huge blow even if the reasons are worth it.
We like earning money and being able to pay
for bills and buy things. In this economy, being
skilled and qualified is a thing to treasure.

It takes so much of
my time. Food posts
and all that are nice to
look at, really, but I end
up not talking to my
date. Naubos oras ko

THe real deal:
Sure, not all girls are onto
some Kardashian-level
oversharing, but they are
pretty crazy about updating
their social media accounts.
But in all honesty, isnt
everyone? The modern,
preferred way to document
lives is via online albums.
Sometimes the magic of the
moment is lost when were
snapping away, and we do
agree that this is something to
work on, but well be damned
if we have to add this to the
already lengthy list of what
girls should stop doing!

THe real deal:
It is a truth universally
acknowledged that living
with your in-laws is straight
up catastrophic. You and
your wife are a whole other
family with a whole other
world of issues to address.
Besides, household dynamics
can get weird. First its just
your wife pointing out how
uncomfortable she is that her
mother-in-law is folding her
underwear. Before you know
it, things have escalated into
a power struggle over raising
your own children. Marriage
is constantly choosing your
partner over other people.
If you and your wife are
choosing each other over
parents on a daily basis,
feelings will get hurt more
often than they should, and
you may be making your allies
the enemies.

Females are
biologically
predisposed to shed

pregnant, a hormone
produced when

a woman increase
milk production.
Also, keeping all that

to increase stress

to cardiovascular

Bunagan.

Ysis, restaurateur
THe real deal:
Kay gave us some information that could
explain this whole nagging wife/girlfriend
deal that seems to plague some relationships.
Its whats in the brain space: the difference in
what interests affects individual priorities. This
un-synchronization can grind on both man and
woman when someone communicates and
the other is not entirely listening. So the reality
is, anyone can be a nag!

Forced sex is the worst. Its uncomfortable

and bitin. Also, I dont want to have to fake
it! Jolo, video editor
THe real deal:
According to Bunagan,
the answer lies in the
hormones. Womens
menstrual cycles dictate
libido, and not all women
are blessed with a regular,
monthly
cycle. This
causes
womens sex

drive to appear more erratic

compared to men, who have
a steadier production of
hormones in their bodies.
Sometimes Netflix and Chill
is just that: Netflix and chill.
The thing is, all humans
have the
reasons and
right to say
not tonight.

Apparently, it does hurt. A lot. If Id

opt for the painless method, which
is the laser treatment, then therell

THe real deal:
Its tough to be a woman in a society
obsessed with smooth armpits because
guess what: all armpits have hair! When
women have hair in places other than their
scalp, its just asking for ridicule; meanwhile
men are considered super sexy when
rugged and covered with facial hair.
Bunagan explains that this practice has
been driven by how media presents hygiene
for women. It is heightened, more so with
the aesthetics side of it all, so everyone
aims for the silky, white pits!

IF I WERE A GIRL,

i would tag along boys nights

John, BPO employee

THe real deal:

Girls would really
rather hang out with
girlfriends, or by
themselves. Guys can
be crass and weve
hung out with them
enough to know that
they sometimes talk
about farts and other
bodily functions. If your
girl always insists on
this, Bunagan advises:
Assess her reasons.
Maybe something
bothers her that she
feels the need to keep
an eye on you. We say
you dont ignore your
phone on nights out,
buddy. Update her!

ost of our beaches are
literally at the ends of the
earth, each one offering
different degrees of
desolation and freedom.
While remote, these
secret coasts are yours for
the taking. But the normal
weekend warrior would
only gloss over these hidden
gems when planning a trip;
with the limited amount of
vacation time we all get,
its safer to head for a tried
and true location. However,
if you do choose to stray
off the well-Instagrammed
path, you may end up in
a getaway like this, in
Zambales.
Regina Swan, our model
from Brazil, grew up next
to a surf beach in Recife
like this onebut she never
really got into the ocean
vibe. So instead of asking
her to join us for a day of
surf, we asked her what
she thought of our slice
of nature compared to the
views back home. She said
it was beautiful. The way
she said it, wed say it was
totally worth the trip.

Super
pair

WORDS : ASH MAHINAY; PHOTOGR APHY: MARK JESALVA

Double up on
your shaDe
A premium pair of
sunglasses is a good buy
for several reasons. Unlike
fancy clothing, all you
need is some sun to justify
whipping them out. They
actually protect your eyes
from the elements. They
look cool on anyone. And
they let you scope girls
while being low-key (or at
least you think you are).
It is really hard to settle
on what single pair to get,
though; sometimes youve
got it all the way down to
a single silhouette, like our
Ray-Bans here, but then
youre losing your hair over
the lens color decision. Our
solution is simple: get more
than one. You dont limit
yourself to a single pair
of shoes, pants, or a shirt,
no matter how classic,
timeless, or perfect they
are, after all.

The paTTern of The season

A lot of prints and
patterns are good to roll
with in the summer
but the one that looks
spot-on is the nautical
or Breton stripe. Maybe
because it has legit
style history (the 1800s

French Navy introduced

these as their uniform),
maybe because its bold
without being loud, or
maybe because it goes
well with pretty much
anything (except more
Breton stripes).

WoW,
a haT!

There was a
moment in time,
Ne-Yos heyday in
fact, when Pinoy
men collectively
lost their minds
and started
wearing fedoras
everywhere. To the
mall, to church, to
workbut never to
a girls bedroom
because we found
out (belatedly) that
they all thought it
was a disgusting
look. But, we have
to admit, it does
look less douchey
than wearing a
snapback to the
beach, so you get
a pass there. Just
make sure you
dont roll up with
your entire squad
rocking them!

The fabric of
The Times
In case you missed it, linen is
what a literally cool summer
shirt is made of. Its crumply
vibe dresses down a shirt
so you dont look like a
stodgy guy on the beach.
Don't wear pants with them
though; even linens cool-guy
powers cannot overcome the
discomfort you'll be bearing.

He wakes up at 5 a.m. after only four

hours of sleep. He slogs through Edsa
traffic for two hours and ends up at
his office sweaty, irritable, hungry
(Dammit, I forgot to eat breakfast.
Again!), and with painful shoulders.
He hunkers down to work at his highstress job. (I would actually feel like
crying some days, Robbie says. Of
course, I keep it all in.) He takes full
advantage of his lunch break to head
to the nearby mall and indulge in his
favorite comfort food: burgers. To ward
off extra stress, he brings back a bag of
munchies to snack on throughout the
rest of the day. By then, Robbies raring
to head home, but not before eating
another burger with everything on it
for an early dinner, because, you know,
hes a growing boy. After another twohour commute, Robbie arrives home.
He plunks down to watch his favorite
series while eating his second dinner.
Sometimes he falls asleep on the
couch with his hand still in a bag of
chips and Salonpas strips on his sore
shoulders.
The next day, Robbie discovers he
has hypertension (and high blood sugar,
by the way) during his annual company
checkup, where they stop his treadmill
test midway when his blood pressure
shoots up. They were as surprised
as I was when they saw that my blood
pressure was already 140/100. They
had to do the test again after I took my
lunch, just to make sure. There were
no symptoms to warn Robbie of his
condition, except for persistent pain on
his shoulders.
That day, Robbie foregoes his precommute-home burger. And while
eating his only dinner for the day at
home, he checks out gym membership
fees on the internet.
Now we ask you: Are you Robbie?

How well you live your life is the

most important thing when it comes
to matters of the heart. According
to statistics, guys are harder hit
between the two sexes when it comes
to coronary heart disease. More males
than females are succumbing to heart
attacks and strokes.
The teleserye stereotype of the rich
old magnate in velvet robes clutching
his chest as his heart has an episode
does not ring true anymore, either. Dr.
Arby Baybay, who heads the Internal
Medicine section at the Asian Hospital
in Muntinlupa, reveals that his heart
patients are getting younger. Just last
year I had five patients in a row; all had
heart attacks. Their ages range from 38
to 42. My youngest heart attack patient
is at the ripe old age of 25.

undeR
pRessuRe

Its a lifestyle disease, explains Dr.

Baybay. A lot of people dont realize
that their lifestyle choices even at a
young age affect their heart health.
These heart problems do not happen
overnight. There is a cumulative effect.
You dont get a heart attack simply
because you indulged in something
high-cholesterol a month before.
He explains how heart attacks happen.
It starts from the rich, fatty food you
eat that leads to cholesterol buildup. If
you eat so much processed food from
an early age, you develop plaque that
accumulates on the inner wall of your
artery. Plaque has chemicals that clog
the arteries with deposits such as
calcium and cholesterol. In high-stress
situations that require more oxygen
flow in the body, such as strenuous
physical activity, the oxygen-rich blood
has a hard time circulating. Thats

Start sweating

calories, especially at night

and start a cardio workout.
Resistance training can come
afterwards when you lose that
water weight and you start
getting hooked because you
have been seeing results.
Many might say that this
is easier said than done, but
Tomilloso says it is all about
taking that first step. It can
take as little as 30 minutes to
an hour, four times a week. Find
something that you like doing,
or something that you find easy
to do, like brisk walking, biking,
or swimming. What is important

Since obesity and a sedentary

lifestyle are contributors to
heart problems, Ryan Tomilloso,
a fitness specialist at the
Crimson Hotel in Alabang
advises sweating it out. Its
a combination of high caloric
intake and a sedentary lifestyle.
They should be more active, not
only to look good but for health
purposes, to burn those calories,

where the symptoms, such as chest

pain, start.
The doc lists down the risk factors
that contribute to heart problems.
First is smoking. It increases blood
pressure and the tendency for blood
to clot. Then it is also what you eat.
Because of the fast pace of life, people
are eating more processed food. These
are high in trans-fat, cholesterol,

is to have a fitness goal and to

stick to it.
Another obstacle is that fear
of feeling sore after a workout.
This is where a fitness trainer
comes in, because we can
plan a workout and help avoid
injuries. He likewise advises
making simple changes such
as taking the stairsanything
to get you moving. You will see
that if you have a healthy body,
you will feel less stressed and
able to focus more on work,
Tomilloso says.

sugar, and salt. The consumption

of more processed food and lack of
exercise lead to obesity, which is
another risk factor. Having a parent
or sibling who has had a heart attack
or stroke is also an early indicator, he
says.
Stress comes into play when it leads
you to make the wrong decisions. In
itself, stress is ambivalent. Whether
physical, mental or emotional, you
can learn to manage it. What it does,
though, is lead you to smoke, drink, or
eat the wrong kind of food as a form
of release or relief. Lack of sleep, as in
the case of BPO workers, is a form of
physical stress, Dr. Baybay adds. Then,
what do these employees do? They stay
up at the end of their graveyard shift,
smoking and drinking. They do not
exercise either, and they stay stationary
at their work stations.

n i p iT i n T h e b u d

As always, prevention is better than

cure. While modern medicine is
advanced enough to offer heart attack
patients a second shot at life, it is still
easier, simpler, and cheaper to end
those bad habits early on before they
end you.

www.fhm.com.ph

First on your to-do list should be

to go and get a workup, especially if
you feel you are at risk. They can get
tested even at the age of 28, says Dr.
Baybay. For cancers, the screening
can come later on, but we can already
start taking a look at the heart,
particularly if the person has a family
history of heart disease.
There are several ways to monitor
heart health. A basic cardio test would
be an ECG or electrocardiogram
(where electrodes record the impulses
that make your heart beat). Your
doc might also order a blood test to
check cholesterol and sugar levels,
depending on what they feel they need
to look into based on your consultation
and risk factors involved. If you
think that you are [at] high risk, dont
wait. Get a check-up and live a healthy
lifestyle. Dont wait for the symptoms,
Dr. Baybay advises. When you do get
diagnosed, listen to your doctor, turn
your lifestyle around and take your
medication as needed.

Avoid refined sugars

The halo-halo is a simple complicated dessert. How is

that?
Its essentially ice, milk, and sugar. Take these three
out and you have nothing. Its afterwards thats a free-forallmeaning, in keeping with the concept of it being halohalo you can pretty much throw in anything you want. But
a true halo-halo will always have the classic ingredients
(see inset).
The thing about halo-halo, as with many Pinoy culinary
delights, is that every creator of the concoction says
theirs is the best. But is it really? Taste is subjective, and
we leave it up to you to decide, although we have good
reason to believe Teresitas may be a gold standard.
Teresitas opened in San Fernando, Pampanga in
2002, owned and run by the Razon family of Pampanga.
Nine years later, they decided to open Teresitas first Metro
Manila outlet.
Does the Razon name sound familiar to you? Thats
because their family has been feeding you good food
since you were little. As the story goes, there were13
Razon siblingsthree of them grew up with a unique
mastery of the kitchen. These three Razon women opened
a restaurant but also shared their recipes with their
relatives. Soon, their relatives started their own food joints,
all of whom offered the three Razons signature treats:
halo-halo and pancit palabok.
A niece-in-law named Teresita, saw first-hand how her
aunts worked the kitchen, and even assisted them as they
cooked. Aling Teresita eventually inherited the heirloom
recipes and culinary secrets. Thats how Teresitas came
to be.
So, whats so special about this halo-halo recipe? Its
all in the ingredients

A regular Teresita's Halo-halo

Thats the right

way to stack
up halo-halo
ingredients inside
a glass. But we
know that little
chef inside of
you wants to
do something
different.
Experiment at your
own risk. However,
we can vouch for
these upgrades:

SAGING
The real secret [of our
halo-halo], says Ryan
Razon, the eldest son
of Aling Teresita, is its
simplicity. Instead of using
ten ingredients, which
is the common practice,
Teresitas halo-halo only
uses four, with the banana
as the foundation. They
dont just slice and dice
the fruit, thoughthey
mash, grind, mix it with
sugar, and cook it for
better flavor. Your tito
knows this as minatamis
na saging.

ADD CREAM PUFFS

Slice the cream puffs
(how many depends on
your appetite). Take out
the filling. Toss into your
halo-halo. Mix.
BLEND IT
If you find it really difficult
to eat your halo-halo
using that tiny spoon with
a long handle, do this:
dump that halo-halo into
a blender and give it three
or four good swirls. We
tried it with Teresitas, and
it changed our life.

MACAPUNO
Again: Minatamis.
Theirs dont come from
a jarthey prepare the
macapuno themselves.
LANGKA
Heres another thing to
remember: Use fresh. Or
facebook.com/FHM.ph

at the very least, dont use

anything youve kept too
long in the refrigerator (a
week is too long). With
langka, the more dizzying
it smells, the better.
LECHE FLAN
The secret to a great
leche flan is to be
generous with the
ingredients. Dont scrimp
on the eggs and the milk;
you want a full taste that
will envelop your mouth.
Preparing each ingredient
before cooking the leche
flan means that di magaagaw-agaw yung flavor,
explains Razon. This way,
he adds, youll have a
halo-halo with a distinct
banana/leche flan/
langka/macapuno taste.
Not just ice, milk, and
other sweet somethings.

Hurt level: Like any other massage, it really depends on how strong you
can handle it. Dont let the high pressure bit scare you. This experience is
relatively mild compared to being hosed down by riot police.
Payoff: This utilizes cascading water from the falls as it strikes all parts of
the body, says Jennet Sanchez, Marketing Manager. It relieves muscle aches
and pain, reduces fatigue, and improves condition of the nervous system.
How long it takes: Approximately two to three minutes.
Cost: P550 at Ace Water Spa (includes use of all the spas amenities).
Restrictions: If you can handle the pressure then you're good to go.

Hurt level: There are four

different hot pools with
varying scents, like rose,
lavender, and mint, and
temperatures ranging from
36 degrees to 40 degrees
Celsius so you can
pick the one that youre
comfortable with.
Payoff: The process
prevents stiffness, which
is beneficial to people with
arthritis, releases toxins in
the body while stimulating
blood flow, strengthens
the immune system,
enhances kidney function,
and eliminates insomnia.
How long it takes:
Approximately two to

Restrictions: Pregnant
women, persons with
heart ailments and high
blood pressure, and kids
below 12 years old are
not allowed to use the hot

Hurt level: Dont worry if you
have ticklish feet, exfoliating with

Payoff: The whole set-up will

look good. To illustrate: there are
flowers floating on the soapy,
milky substance. As one of the
most neglected parts of a guys
body, your feet will feel really
pampered.

tension from specific
muscles groups. Hear
that, girlfriend?

Remember your cool-kid, high school days when

you used to hide your secret drink inside your

were letting you in on a secret: when we have to sit

Here are some criteria that
we run our alcohol by:
1 It should go

From some sizzling sisig

picky with our appetizers,
just as long as you give

of the food. We tried a
Japanese brand for a
change, an Asahi Super
Dry Beer, and we say it
has a very mild honey

with most of our choice
pulutan.
2 Is it sweet?
While Italians might

You are here.

And sometimes thats okay, especially when youre
chugging beer on your friends roof deck on a payday
Friday, the citys color and noise at your feet. Or on those rare times when
the bus youre riding cruises through a traffic-free Edsa just before dawn.
But you are here and most of the time you dont want to be. Not when
there are bills and queues and the MRT and your boss; not when another
taxi driver rejects you and speeds off; not when every new headline
about rape jokes makes your head pound in shame for your people.
So you pack your bags and leavefor five days, two weeks, a
monthlong enough to forget, short enough to still remember. Seat
sales and Airbnb are your best friends. Never mind that you need to dip
into your savings. Never mind that you need to subsist on instant pancit
canton and crackers before you leave. You are confident that the dent
this trip will make on your budget will be worth it. It better be.
Now the plane is touching down in an unfamiliar city with a
definitive thud. You have finally found yourself in another corner of the
world where there are districts to explore, exotic cuisine to sink your
teeth into, subway systems to figure out, rowdy backpackers to grab
a drink with, intimidatingly hot women to pretend not to ogle, and
an entire culture to soak up. Armed with a taste for adventure, you
set out to discover what this new place has to offerand maybe
discover some missing part of yourself, too. ( Naks. ) You take a
lot of photos and rake in the likes, acquiring comments such as,
Sarap naman! Of course you cant help but feel a bit smug. You
are here while all of them are back home. Sarap nga naman.
You will weave in and out of main roads and back alleys,

and you will be reminded that getting lost is inevitable. Its part of the
experience, the way flight delays and language barriers are. You will get
lost, and things will be lost in translation. But soon enough you will point
yourself in the right directionor at least muster the humility to ask for
directionsthe way you always managed to do back home. Diskarte lang.
You are here, the map will tell you, a tiny red dot in a maze of streets.
Just when the vacation is starting to feel like real life, it will be time to
go. Just like that. So you head back. Maybe a few pounds heavier. Maybe
a few notches wiser. And when the citys chaos and sweltering heat
welcome you, you will know that you are home. You are here. Again. And
for some time, that will be okay. You are reenergized enough for all of it:

are here, and for some time, you will want to be.

SIMPLY
UNSTOPPABLE
Derek Ramsay is rough, tough,
and willing to push his limits.

Always push
yourself. What
you expected was
your limit, you can
always surpass.

erek Ramsay is currently

shooting his electionthemed movie, My Candidate, which explains the
longer do, a departure
from his trademark buzz
cut. He is waiting for the day when he
can have it all cut off again, he confides
laughingly. My hair was one of my insecurities growing up because it was so thick
and it was also such a hassle when I was
playing sports. These photos show him
executing workout moves that would have
left a lesser mortal in the throes of agony,
but he breezed through them effortlessly,
owing to the fact that he takes 30 minutes
a day to do an intense routine. The buff
bod is something he works on religiously,
and his being active has opened many
doors for the actor.
He has been in showbiz for 10 years
and has been playing sports even longer
than that. Here, he shares his thoughts
about how an active mind and body have
helped him to achieve his life goals and
how they allow him to set the bar higher
each and every time.

Was there a point when you were

insecure about your body?
I was very healthy when I was born. I was
a chubby baby. I had 10 bottles of milk
lined up outside my crib that I could just
grab. That was why my parents got me
into sports. In high school I was the smallest and the lightest but you could tell that
I was athletic. I didnt fill out until I got to
around my third year. I didnt consciously
start out to bulk up, it just happened.
You were able to represent our
country for Ultimate Frisbee, are you
still active with that or are there any
other sports you are into now?
With Ultimate Frisbee, not as much as I
used to. I am slowly trying to step away
from the sport, but they asked me to join
the team one more time for the World
Cup in UK this June, so I am preparing for
that now. I am also interested in obstacle
course racing, because of a new show
TV5 is launching called Tough x Rough,
and we are looking for Pinoy athletes from
other neighboring countries to compete

in the world championship this year. What

I am really starting to like is golf.
Golf? Thats a bit of a departure from
your extreme sports.
For me, it is the most intense. Its the
hardest sport. Its not physical as it is
mental, you cant blame anybody but
yourself for decisions that you make. You
cant afford to be distracted, one swing can
cost you so much. Sometimes I dont enjoy
it, but then I go back out there. I can shoot
under par but I can also shoot 10 over! It is
also my bonding activity with my dad. I love
spending time with him and beating him.
Golf is a sport I really want to get into and
maybe become a pro. Well see.
How does this mental toughness from
all your sports help you with your day job?
It helps that when you are on the set, you
know how to focus. If you lose your focus
even for just a moment, people will see
that on the big screen. It also teaches you
that you cant just think about yourself.
You learn to gauge how everybody else is

performing and you make certain adjustments.

With English Only, Please, even though the role was
simple, I had to put nuances into the character so that
people will not look at him and see Derek. I made it
look like I was just relaxed but it was actually very hard.
I had to focus on being that character.

same thing, I want to be respectful to my partner, and

smelling fresh on the set is one less thing to worry about.
My priority in life is not looking good, but I have to
take that into consideration, especially for the shows
where I have to be a pretty boy. Its about having an
active, healthy lifestyle and pushing my limits.

What are the other tough parts of your job?

It can get very stressful. With all the things that have
been happening lately, you get a clue about how hard
people have to work in the industry. You have to take
notice of that and realize that it is inhumane to be
working for more than 24 hours. Whether you are an
artista, a director, lighting crew, or in cateringwe are
all human beings. A little more focus and preparation
will go a long way in working shorter hours.

Does it come naturally for you to always aim high?

I say, always push yourself. What you expected was
your limit, you can always surpass. This will help you
continue to get better and better. When I started
showbiz, sinasagad ko na and I thought hanggang dito
na lang. Then I won Best Actor award for English, Only
Please at the Metro Manila Film Festival. This motivated
me to do even more. When I work out, I push my body
to the limit, tapos babagsak ang katawan ko. Instead of
giving up, I try again about two days later, and I realize
that I can do much more. As long as hindi ko naman
papatayin ang sarilli ko. Ha ha ha! I keep making my
goals higher. I will live that way until the day I die.

How were you able to last for 10 years in

this crazy industry?
The most important is always wanting to learn. I look
forward to learning from all the people I work with. Its
about being a sponge and soaking up more knowledge
about the craft. If I didnt feel that I was bettering
myself, I would step down.
What is the toughest part of being Derek Ramsay?
My biggest challenge is being myself. I have to
constantly remind myself not to get sucked into this
world and in effect getting sucked into things you dont
want to allow to happen. Sometimes I piss people off
because I am very vocal about certain things. But, as
long as I feel that what I say is delivered in a respectful
manner I dont think there is anything wrong.
The intrigues are part of the industry and, again,
with that I am not going to make decisions based on
how people expect me to react. If they judge me then
let them judge me. In the beginning, people didnt
understand that about me, but now they respect
me for it.
With the physical and emotional toll it takes on
people like you, what motivates you to keep going?
On days when I am tired or sick, I just remind myself
that I have signed a contract and people expect me to
deliver on my responsibilities. My dad always told me,
your name is the most important thing that you have,
and I carry his name too. Ha ha ha! The way I am wired
is that if I commit to something, I follow through. In this
business too, you cant just coast along. There is always
someone new coming in. You have to constantly better
yourself para hindi magsawa ang tao sa iyo.
What can you say about staying active even
though you are busy?
I can honestly say that as I get older, it becomes
harder for me to get up in the morning. I move twice
as slow and roll around in bed for another five minutes.
With age comes wisdom and experience, though, and
you get to find new ways to have an advantage over
your opponent.
How important is it for you to look and feel fresh
on the field and on the job, then?
I am glad that theres Belo Men Clinical Strength
Anti-Perspirant Deodorant. The best way to describe
it is when you are playing against international teams.
You can see and smell the difference. Ha ha ha! Using
the product gives me one less thing to worry about,
because I dont want to worry about body odor. When
I am working, especially with an intimate scene, its the

WIN AGAINST #WORKOUTFAIL

Fix your form when sweating it out to avoid injury, and to
max your #gainz!

Operation balik-macho has you heading to the gym so you can unleash your abs at
the beach. Thats a fitness goal, and a good thing. But before you go beast mode,
take a step back and consider your formespecially on exercises that you consider
elementary. Fix your form doing these five common exercises and youll be saying
hello to a better body in no time.

Plank

#WorkoutFail:
Doing the plank with your hips too low, therefore
losing the tension in your core. A study published
in the journal Medicine & Science in Sport &
Exercise says that when done correctly, the plank
is the best exercise for your core as it activates
your mid-section, glutes, and back muscles while
working on their strength and stability.
Do it Right:
Go into the plank position with resting your weight
on your forearms and your toes. There should be
a straight line from your shoulders to your heels.
Contract your core and squeeze your glutes
together and hold this position for 30 seconds to
a minutethe ideal time range for this exercise.

Push-ups

#WorkoutFail: Do any of these, and you

squander this workout: Dropped neck, elbows
flared out, and hips dropped too low, says Nico
DHaenen, a Cagayan De Oro-based strength and
conditioning coach. Push-ups really should be
like moving planks, there should be a straight line
from your shoulders to your heels for each rep
you do, adds DHaenen.
Do it Right: Assume the push-up position resting
your weight on your hands and toes. There
should be a straight line from your shoulders
to your heels. Lower yourself by bending both
elbows until your chest is close to the floor.
Pause and go back to the starting position. Keep
your elbows close to your body when you lower
yourself and contract your core with each rep.

Box Jumps

#WorkoutFail:
This exercise is great for developing leg power
but pay attention to your landing. Also, because
its easy to misconstrue as a cardio exercise,
you might do this in high volume, which spells
trouble for your knees. Going high volume,
where you jump up and down, doubles the stress
on your muscles and joints, warns DHaenen.
Do it Right:
Stand in front of a knee-high box or bench.
Slightly bend your knees, swing your arms back
and in one motion jump and swing your arms to
drive yourself up. Land softly on top of the box
on the upper-half of your feet with your knee at
the same angle of your take off. A good landing
doesnt make a loud sound. Slowly step down
and do it again. Thats a rep.

Deadlifts

#WorkoutFail:
Lifting a barbell stacked with heavy plates can look
mighty impressive. But focusing too much on the
weight and instead of the right form puts stress on
your back. Regardless of the kind of deadlift, its
a hip exercise, not a lower back one. You should
feel your hips and hamstrings working the hardest,
in that order, says Chappy Callanta, C.S.C.S., head
coach of the 360 Fitness Club Chain.
Do it Right:
Stand facing a barbell in front of your shins. Bend
your knees, push your hips back and hold the bar
with an overhand grip with your hands wider than
shoulder-width apart. Keep your chest out, your
back flat as you squeeze your glutes together and
push from your heels to straighten your legs to
stand up and pull the bar up to your hips. Contract
your core and keep your back straight at all times.

Pull-ups

#WorkoutFail:
Dont swing wildly to push yourself up the bar.
That just puts extra stress on your shoulders,
man. Also, contract your core to stabilize your
body with each rep.
Do it Right:
Hang from a pull-up bar with an overhand grip
with your hands slightly wider than shoulderwidth apart. Cross your legs behind you and
contract your core. Pull yourself up until your
chest is close to the bar.

3 GYM RULES YOU

SHOULD ALWAYS FOLLOW

Never forget these

whenever you
work out
Rule#1:
Always wipe-down
the equipment
with your towel
People will
understand that
sweating is a
normal human
physiological
reaction. But
when you leave
equipment
drenched in sweat,
the poor person
whos going to
use it after you
wont appreciate
it. Wipe off your
spot before you
proceed.
Rule#2:
Return the
weights once done
You can lift
really heavy,
right? So there
shouldnt be a
problem returning
dumbbells and
plates where you
got them once you
are finished with
your set, right?
Its common
courtesy, yo!
Rule#3:
Lessen the
gym selfies
Hey, we get that
you want to show
off your gains.
But when you hog
equipment and the
mirrors just to get
the perfect selfie
youre not the only
one using the gym,
you know.

YES,

MAN-FOOD CAN
BE HEALTHY

With a few recipe tweaks, you can turn sinful eats into more
nutritious meals. Start with these two favorites

ertain dishes, after a single bite, have

the power to get you grinning from
ear to ear. This is man-food at its
best (cold beer on the side, always an
excellent option). Consider the regular culprits:
pizzas, burgers, chicken wings, ribs, chips,
and steakstextbook comfort food. Sure, they
make you happy but theyre also most likely
the culprits behind your ever-expanding gut.

These foods are normally higher in fat, sugar,

and preservatives, says pharmacist and chef
Laica Herrera. The good news is: you dont
have to shun man-food altogether. By cooking
your own comfort meals using some recipe
tweaks, you can make them nutritious while
still getting your fix. Check out the hacks
below and give yourself a healthier option for
a couple of your favorites.

Fortify Your Burger

Who can resist a big juicy burger? Is there a way for it to
be less indulgent? Burgers should have a well balanced
mixture of ground beef, fat, and herbs and spices, says
Hererra. Follow these tweaks to make yours a healthy one.

GET THE RIGHT RATIO

The best way to ensure that burgers
are on the healthier side is to buy your
own meat and have it ground at the
store, advises Hererra. Making your
own patty entails having the right ratio
of beef to fat. A 80:20 beef-to-fat
ration is good so that the burger will
still have enough juice on it.

PILE ON THE VEGGIES

Not only do you add crunch
to every bite, but using fresh
vegetables increases your
fiber intake, which is good for
digestive health.

CHOOSE
CONDIMENTS WISELY
Most of the time, its really the sauces
or condiments that make a meal fatter,
says Hererra. Do away with usual
sugary condiments and use healthier
ones like mustard, which contains
Allyl Isothiocyanate (AITC), a healthy
phytochemical. A study published in
the journal Carcinogenesis found that
AITC helps inhibit the development and
progression of bladder cancer

COOK IT RIGHT
Grill the meat instead
of frying it. The fat from
your patty will drip off,
instead of having it
swimming in its own fat
when its fried with oil.

LEVEL-UP
YOUR BREAD
Use whole-wheat buns
instead. Theyre higher
in fiber, which increases
satietymaking you
crave less unhealthy
food after youre done
devouring your burger.

Wing it Better
Three things make chicken wings
unhealthy: The actual chicken
meat, marination, and the cooking
method, says Hererra. Make wings
night healthier with these hacks

CHOOSE
YOUR CHICKEN
Use free-range. Even
though your wings are
covered with skin (where
most of the fat is,) at least
you wont be ingesting any
other chemicals.

USE THE RIGHT

MARINADE
Substitute butter and sugar
for healthier alternatives,
says Hererra. Use honey, Dijon
mustard, and spicesall of
which add a punch to your
recipe while slashing calories.

CHANGE THE
WAY YOU COOK
Deep frying adds to the fat
youll ingest. Baking or grilling
are still the better cooking
methods to make healthier and
succulent wings, says Hererra.
You can also use an air fryer for
truly fat-free cooking.

BREAKING BAD

Food so good, eating it regularly can kill you

TABA NG TALANGKA

ISAW

Who can resist that gooey

orange goodness? Its good
with rice, pasta, or even by
itself. But what youre eating
is straight-up cholesterol.
Consume in moderation.

Its crispy, salty, and goes well

with beer. But its high in uric
acid, and full of unhealthy oils
that can block your arteries.

Grilled chicken and pork

intestines are the bomb! But
they can also be sources of
bad bacteria, which can affect
your gut. Its also high in uric
acid, which may lead to gout.

THE POWER
OF PAWIS

WHILE SWEAT IS COMMONLY VIEWED AS OFF-PUTTING, PERSPIRATION

IS HEALTHY AND DOES YOUR BODY A LOT OF GOOD, TOO
When youre sweating buckets in the middle of a
rather hot day and there are obvious signs of jabar
on your shirt, its a rather unpleasant feeling. But
every time you sweat, your body actually benefits
from this. Here are five healthy gains that occur
whenever your skin starts dripping.
SWEAT BENEFIT #1:
YOUR BODY STAYS COOL
Sweating is the bodys defense mechanism from
overheating, says Gia Sison, M.D., D.P.C.O.M., an occupational
medicine specialist and chief medical officer of Global
Telehealth, Inc., the team behind www.konsulta.md.
You cool off once the sweat evaporates. When your body
fails to regulate its temperature, conditions such as
heatstroke can occur, which can damage your brain, heart,
kidneys, and muscles.
SWEAT BENEFIT #2:
YOU GET TO NATURALLY DETOX
When you sweat it out regularly, you rid your body of toxins.
[Sweating releases] toxins and chemicals from your system.
It also assists in de-bloating us, says Dr. Sison. This helps
your immune system function better and prevents diseases
caused by toxic overload.
SWEAT BENEFIT #3:
IT KEEPS YOUR FACE LOOKING POGI
Unless youre an athlete, its dyahe to have your face covered
in sweat. But while its not a pleasant sight, just remember
that sweat helps the skin on your face, too. Sweating opens
up your pores, which releases any toxins clogging them up.
This, in turn, prevents acne. Just make sure you wash your
face with a good facial wash twice a day as your skin can
actually react with sweat if you dont practice good hygiene.
SWEAT BENEFIT #4:
YOURE MORE RESISTANT TO INFECTION
A lot of diseases are transmitted via skin-to-skin contact.
Sweat can actually help, as it contains peptides that are
effective against viruses, fungi, and bacteria. A 2013 study
published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences also found that dermcidin, an anti-microbial
protein secreted by human eccrine sweat glands, is highly
effective in warding off dangerous health bugs and germs.
SWEAT BENEFIT #5:
IT KEEPS THE GOOD VIBES ROLLIN
Okay, this may be an indirect benefit, but you sweat buckets
whenever you go beast mode during workouts. When
you exercise, your body releases endorphinsfeel-good
hormones that boost your mood. So if youre having a bad
day, or have hugot blues, go out there and sweat it out!

WIN AGAINST SWEAT

Take regular showers
Putok aside, sweat can also
affect your skin when left
unwashed. Some people
react to their own sweat by
breaking into an allergy,
warns Dr. Sison.

Pack an extra shirt

This ones a no-brainer! Be
a boy scout and stash an
extra shirt in your car or
your office cabinet

Use a powerful
anti-perspirant
Belo Deo Clinical Strength
Anti-Perspirant Deodorant
for men and women
(that gives you maximum
protection from sweat and

STRONGER
NOW
The 2015 MMFF Best
Actress talks about what
motivates her to sweat it
out at work and at play.

t was a fresh-faced, 16-yearold, Jennylyn Mercado who

first came on TV as a reality
show hopeful in 2003. She
beguiled the audiences with
her talent and upbeat attitude,
which led her to be the first
Ultimate Female Starstruck Survivor in
its first season run.
Since then, she has become a
fixture in local showbiz, starring in
unforgettable teleseryes such as
Encantadia, the racy Rhodora X,
and recently in My Faithful Husband.
She has also released three albums
showcasing her singing prowess, and
was recognized twice by the Metro
Manila Film Festival judges as Best
Actress for her roles in English Only,
Please (2014) and Walang Forever
(2015). 2015 proved to be a banner
year for her too, as the single mom
was voted the Sexiest Woman in the
Philippines in FHMs annual poll.
The multi-talented actress has come
a long way from her simple beginnings.
She may have faced several challenges
in her personal life, all the while
retaining that upbeat, relatable attitude
that has endeared her to fans from the
start. From where she stands now, with
all the hard work she puts in, things
are only bound to get even better.
A few days before the Bionic photo
shoot, she had been confined at the
hospital for what the papers call loss
of voice, but she bounced back
quickly and has since resumed working
on her latest film Just the Three of Us,
proving that you cant keep a strong
woman down.

Whats the most challenging part of

being an artista?
I wont lie; its not easy. Maraming
challenges yanthe first is time. Hindi
mo hawak ang oras mo, youre always
on call. We work at tapings for 24
hours, and you have to have your script
memorized. Then, you have to motivate
yourself to act. Sa akin, sanay na ako
doon. I think for me, at this point, the
most challenging part is dealing with
the intriguesespecially when damay
na ang family ko. Hanggang ngayon yun
ang hindi ko kayang tanggapin.

How do you deal with those

intrigues, then?
As long as hindi totoo, dapat huwag
magpa-apekto. Although, minsan kapag
naririnig mo or nababasa mo, you cant
help but be affected. My mom, nagrereact pa din, even though I have been in
showbiz for a very long time! Ha ha ha!
When you hear those things being
thrown at you, you also still have to keep
smiling. Even if we are tired, we still have
to keep smiling too. Pero kasama sa
trabaho namin yan, to entertain people
and to maintain this image. So whatever

you may be going through at the

moment, you have to stay professional.
As they say, the show must go on.
What keeps you going in
showbiz, then?
I guess its the thought that of all those
aspiring actors out there, hindi lahat
kaya maging Jennylyn Mercado. Ha ha
ha! No, thats a joke! I guess that its
this: ang dami ko nang pinagdaanang
malalaking problema so when something
comes up, I just say, thats all?
What helps me through all these is my

support system. My family is always

behind me and I still have the same
set of friends up to now. I know that
whatever happens, kahit wala na ang
showbiz, sila, andyan pa din.
Your taping schedules can run
really late. What motivates you to
get up the next day?
I dont know... Its weird but I think
I have this inner clock that wakes
me up at 6:00AM every day. Kahit
kulang ang tulog ko, basta six, I wake
up. I just go back to bed if I have
nothing to do, pero basta six-oclock,
nagigising ako.
You have been a triathlete for
some time. What do you get out
of that type of physical exertion?
I enjoy tri a lot! Ive been racing
since Tri United, five years ago.
Gusto ko yung challenges na dala
niya. Iba yung feeling when you
finish a race in three disciplines. I
dont even time myself; wala akong
best time na hinahabol. Whats
important is that I finish, even though
naglalakad na lang ako sa huli.
I will be joining three races this year:
Iron Man in August, where I will do
a relay tapos Tri United and Bataan
International. Im lucky to have a
coach [Jojo Macalintal] who is willing
to take on my crazy schedules,
parang on-call din [siya]. I would
call him and ask if he is available at
5:00AM because I have an 8:00AM
taping. Papayag siya and gigising
siya para sa akin.
Triathlon is a very physical
sport, but how does it help you
with mental toughness?
Ang triathlon, or any extreme sport,
is a mental game. Na-prove ko yan.
Its 99% mental, kasi kapag sinabi
ng brain mo na pagod na siya, your
body will follow. If your brain says its
hungry, na gutom na gutom na ako,
I start getting cranky. Ive had races
like that, where thoughts pop into
my head like, ang pangit-pangit mo
na, or ang itim at ang dumi mo na,
why are you doing this to yourself?
When those thoughts come, umiiyak
na lang ako. Ha ha ha!
How do you counter that?
You just have to keep telling
yourself na kaya mo pa. In the end,
kakayanin naman. As long as you
dont think negative thoughts, youre
okay. Kapag inisip mo kaya mo pa,
makakahanap ka ng lakas.
What are your thoughts when
you cross the finish line?
I feel konting yabang, the kind where
you can say, o kaya niyo yan? Ako

natapos ko! I may not have been

the fastest, but I finished something this grueling. Then, you
start wanting more, because you
get that runners high, and you
get addicted to that. Ang sarap
ng feeling.
How would you compare that
to being called onstage as
Best Actress?
Thats totally different!
Nakakapanghina yun! Thats
the feeling na parang sasabog
ang puso mo and nanghihina
ang tuhod mo at the same time.
Its like you want to shout and
celebrate ngayon na. Iba yung
feeling, hindi mo alam kung
paano ka magsasalita.
There is a big difference
between sweating it out in a
race and having to look glam at
an awards ceremony. How do
you manage to mesh the two?
I take care of my skin by going
to the Belo Clinic. The doctors
there would tease me, saying
O. nag-tri ka na naman? Ayan
na naman tayo! They are
actually kinakabahan every
time August comes around
because that is when I race and
I would be so dark when I go to
them. What works for me is the
Gluta IV and the Revlite. They
help even out my skin tone.
My go-to is Belo Essentials
Clinical Strength Anti-Perspirant
Deodorant, which helps keep
me fresh when I race. Gusto
ko siya kasi ang bango niya. I
can pass somebody at the race
and they would look at me and
think that Im wearing perfume.
Pero ang totoo, naka-deodorant
lang ako. Belo Essentials
Clinical Strength Anti-Perspirant
Deodorant really keeps you dry,
which is important for me.
Long shoot days, intrigues,
competitive racinghow do
you find that willpower to just
get going?
There are days when I just dont
want to get out of bed at all. I just
have to psych myself, especially
pag alam ko na may commitment
ako. I just keep that commitment
in mind, then I take my bath. After
that, okay na ako.
Theres a reason why I work so
hardand thats my family. I have
my son, Jazz, and I am a solo
parent. Matanda na ang parents
ko, so kailangan ko paghandaan
ang lahat. More than anything, I
want to secure my sons future.
