Aim:
To be introduced to Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS)
generator, time domain viewing, snap shot and eye patterns,
two generator synchronization and alignment with the sliding
window correlator.
Theory:

A pseudo random binary sequence generator generates a bit

stream of binary pulses, ls and 0s, of a known and
reproducible pattern, the bit rate of which is determined by the
frequency of an external clock. A long sequence the ls and 0s
are distributed in a (pseudo) random manner. The sequence
pattern repeats after a defined number of clock periods. In a
typical generator the length of the sequence may be set to 2 n
clock periods, where n is an integer. In the TIMS SEQUENCE
GENERATOR (which provides two, independent sequences, X
and Y) the value of n may be switched to one of three values,
namely 2, 5, or 11.

The PRBS is used for supplying a known binary sequence. This

is used as a test signal (message) when making bit error rate
(BER) measurements.
For this, a perfect copy of the transmitted sequence is required
at the receiver, to compare it with the received sequence. This
copy is obtained from an identical PRBS generator.

Observations:

The following PRBS were generated:

The PRBS was passed through an LPF and observed

Decreasing the bandwidth of the filter resulted in the above

output

Two PRBS signals were X-OR to obtain the green sequence

above. An X-OR operation generates a 1 when either, but not
both the inputs are 1.

When the inputs were two identical PRBS signals, the XOR operation gave a constant output of 0.
Result and Discussion:Once the two generators are aligned, they will remain aligned,
even after the alignment link between them is broken. This is
ensured by the common bit clock.
The sequences will be misaligned if the sequences are offset by
a time delay, when the two generators had been separated
some distance, resulting in a delay between transmission and
reception of the SYNC pulse.
The arrangement is called a sliding window correlator because
of the X-OR comparison technique.
