President Sherilyn Emberton, Ed.D.,

Luke Fetters, Ed.D., associate
professor of ministry and missions and
Shoshannah McKinney, international
admissions counselor, spent spring
break in China, forming different
partnerships for the university March
15 through March 22.
We have signed several initial
agreements, which I would call [a]
memorandum of understanding,
Emberton said. We have decided that
there are many characteristics and
commonalities we have among our
institutions, and we would like to
continually explore other partnership
opportunities.

Emberton said the China team

successfully brought back two preliminary agreements Hong Kong English School and
Jilin University Zhuhai Campus. While there, she talked to leaders from several middle
schools and universities.
The group visited six different schools, McKinney said.
At China-Hong Kong English School, they tried to work on a foundational where students
who graduate from that middle school will be able to do their first year in China and
complete their degrees at the university later. They expressed their wishes of launching
the foundation year program this fall.
Hopefully, we will get to explore ways that we can move forward on these partnerships,
Emberton said.
Fetters said one Chinese school in particular has asked Emberton to come for the purpose
of signing an agreement. Since last fall, Emberton has received several gifts and invitation
letters from various Chinese schools.
It was fun to see her in China, Fetters said. She is a very good international traveler.
She is observant, she learns quickly, and it was fun to travel with her.
Emberton also brought gifts from the university to Chinese students.
I had gotten probably about 30 pairs of HU softball sunglasses, she said. I took them
with me in my suitcase. I thought if I meet some students, I will give them sunglasses. So
I did, and they loved them.
By partnering with schools in China, Emberton said the university will continue to seek
possible scholar visits and faculty exchanges.
We also signed a very general memo of understanding with Jilin University in Zhuhai,
Fetters said. They are very interested in our TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of
Other Languages) certificate program because our TESOL certificate is an internationally
recognized certificate.
Fetters said the group had the opportunity to talk with one of the members of the
Communist Party Standing Committee for the city of Zhongshan a city of 4 million
people.
I have known him for maybe twenty years, Fetters said. He was the director of English
education in Zhuhai city when I was doing training in Zhuhai city back in the 90s. So it was
very interesting to meet him 20 years later, and here we are able to do something maybe

A lot of the business that I have done in China, it is more about nurturing relationships
being with people, walking with people and eating with people, Fetters said

After this one-week visit, McKinney has spent a few days up north in Shandong province
and Beijing city to work on more partnerships for the university.
