English Syntax
The study of the internal structure of sentences
and the interrelationships among the internal
parts.
A theory of syntax is based on:
word order
morphological categories of words (e.g., nouns,
adjectives, articles)
functional constituents of sentences (e.g., subjects,
objects, prepositional phrases)
Important Concepts
English is an SVO language (Subject-Verb-Object).
Word order is important in English. The position of a
word in a sentence can change its function, and
sometimes the meaning of the sentence. (e.g., The man
chased the dog and The dog chased the man)
In English the subject cant be dropped from sentences
(except in commands the Imperative form)
Auxiliary verbs and main verbs in English differ with
respect to question formation, negation, and tag
formation.
Teaching Grammar
(Larsen-Freeman, 2001)
A Three-Dimensional Grammar
Framework
In dealing with the complexity of grammar, three
dimensions must concern us:
Structure/form (morphology and syntax)
Meaning (semantics)
Context-appropriate use (pragmatics)
