Bleach like products were first used around

3000BC. It wasn't until 1772 when Karl Wilhelm
Scheele, a Swedish chemist, first discovered
chlorine, an essential ingredient in subsequent
modern bleaches.
In 1913, the Electro-Alkaline Co. was formed and
sold bleach in big crocks only to institutional
users such as laundries and water companies.
The company changed names to Clorox Chemical
in 1922.

Why Chemicals DO NOT eliminate

Germs

Germ corpses smell due to the degradation of

products produced by bacteria and other microorganisms that are using the corpse as food. So
basically what you smell are bacteria.
If cells die, they tend to lyse, i.e. they burst and
the molecules just mix with their surroundings. So
they do not leave corpses per se. There may be
lipid residues (parts of their membrane) but they
will usually be quickly utilized e.g. by other
bacteria.
