GALAXIES

Galaxies
Galaxies are gravitational bounds of

stars, stellar gases, interstellar

gases, dust and dark matter.
Galaxies can be categorised to their
morphology as elliptical, spiral and
irregular galaxies. Examples of
galaxies range from dwarfs with a
few thousand(103) stars to giants
with one trillion(1014 )stars ,each
orbiting their galaxys own centre of
mass.

Elliptical Galaxies
Elliptical galaxy are low portion of open

clusters with a reduced rate of star

formation. Also they have little interstellar
matter and their appearance shows little
structure. These galaxies have an
ellipsoidal profile, giving the galaxy an
elliptical appearance. Consequently these
galaxies have a low portion of open
clusters that reduce the rate of new star
formation. Instead they are dominated by
generally older and more evolved stars
that orbit in random directions.

Spiral Galaxies
The spiral galaxy have spiral arms that

are made from bright stars that reach

out from the densely packed core. The
stars in the spiral arms turn around the
core. The majority of mass is in the
roughly spherical halo of dark matter
that extends beyond the visible
component. It appears that some spiral
galaxies have fat and bulging while
other spiral galaxies have flat discs.

Barred Spiral Galaxies

This type of spiral galaxy has a

central bar shape that has the core

of the galaxy in the middle. It has
a structure composed of stars,
interstellar gas and spiral arms. It
has about 30 kiloparsecs in
diameter and a kiloparsec thick.
A kiloparsec is
equivalent to
3259 light years.

Irregular Galaxies
An Irregular Galaxy does not have a

distinctive regular shape, unlike the

spiral or elliptical galaxy. Some
Irregular Galaxies are just messy
collections of stars. An example of a
Irregular Galaxy is The Small
Magellanic Cloud that orbits the
Milky Way. The shape of a Irregular
Galaxy is very uncommon.
