Program Outcomes

The Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Saint Mary builds on the skills
of baccalaureate-prepared nurses in order to prepare students for advanced nursing
practice. Advanced practice nurses in nursing education are expected to be change
agents, leaders, and innovators in this specialty area (USM, 2015).

Outcome 1
Graduates of the MSN program will integrate comprehensive assessment, theory,
evidence, clinical judgment, research, patient values, and inter-professional
perspectives in advance nursing practice for diverse populations and environments
(USM, 2015, p. 362).
Several courses in our MSN program helped me achieve this outcome. I learned how
to do a full head to toe assessment in our Health Assessment course. I wrote a
paper to Louisianas congressmen in our Health and Politics course. Also, every
week in every course we wrote discussions that helped me build my understanding
of these needs in an advanced nursing role.
Outcome 2
Graduates of the MSN program will utilize information and technology to
communicate, educate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision
making for quality improvement processes (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this goal throughout the program, I have never taken an online course before.
The best lesson I learned in this outcome was in our Teaching with Technology
course where we were challenged to create a game for students and I produced an
evidence-based Jeopardy game on bedside care regarding multiple care routines
and orders.

Outcome 3
Graduates of the MSN program will synthesize ethical, economic, legal, and
political factors that influence health care to influence the organization and
financing of health care and educational delivery systems (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this goal in the Healthcare Policy and Ethics class, by writing a letter to my
congressman regarding healthcare changes that could be implemented to help
provide Louisiana citizens with better overall health. We also held a lot of
discussions in that class and throughout the program focusing on nursing ethics and
legality issues.

Outcome 4
Graduates of the MSN program will collaborate to design, coordinate, and evaluate

patient-centered health care as a leader or member of an inter-professional team

(USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this outcome by creating an asthma simulation for a pediatric patient for the
school I work at for our Foundations and Teaching course. We now offer the
simulation during every pediatric rotation at the school.

Outcome 5
Graduates of the MSN program will contribute to nursing practice to improve health
care outcomes by translating evidence into practice (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I have met this outcome in multiple courses. There has been a large focus on using
evidence-based practice in the program. We have participated in several
discussions regarding evidence-based practice and have used evidence-based
practice in almost every paper we have written throughout the program.

Outcome 6
Graduates of the MSN program will integrate evidence based findings for patientcentered and culturally responsive strategies for clinical prevention and health
promotion for diverse populations and environments (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this outcome in my Advanced Pharmacology course. I researched and wrote a
paper about a new FDA approved medication (Orkambi) for Cystic Fibrosis in 2015.
We also wrote papers early on in the program regarding ethics and cultural
sensitivity.

Outcome 7
Graduates of the MSN program will advocate for policies to improve population
health, access to quality care, and the profession of nursing (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this competency by writing a letter to Louisianas congressman about public
health and ways we can improve the way people take care of themselves by
providing healthcare fairs and healthy food education.

Outcome 8
Graduates of the MSN program will provide evidence of professional and personal
goal development and activities (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this competency throughout the program through reflective journals and
discussions on my future goals. Also, we have completed a full teaching portfolio on
Weebly.com. I also have written a paper regarding my teaching philosophy and my
nursing philosophy as well.

Outcome 9
Graduates of the MSN program will integrate the 5 C's of caring - commitment,
conscience, competence, compassion, and confidence - in advanced nursing
practice (USM, 2015, p. 362).
I met this goal by being committed to my goal of finishing, even doubling up for the
last two terms, in order to get a full time job in the fall. I displayed my conscience
with completing all assignments whole-heartedly and by myself. I displayed my
competence in Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology,
and Health assessment. I have a well-rounded compassion for what I do, with
patients and in school, I have talked to other students who have been stressed
regarding school and completing assignments. I displayed my confidence during my
capstone project by teaching in full classrooms and implementing alternative
teaching styles.
