-Meeting your
students needs as
people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and

cultural backgrounds of your students? (10 pts)
-

Four students struggle with math such as fractions.

Five students struggle with reading. Have a difficult time
sounding out words and comprehending text.
- One student is an English Language Learner.
- Most of the students are very active and like to be engaged
in activities while three students are quiet and to
themselves.
- One student likes to share her snacks with her friends.
- Two students love to help with homework.
- One student struggles at home with financial issues.
- A group of students prefer to be on the blue team when
playing soccer. Certain students feel left out when they are
placed in the green team.
- A group of four boys love to talk about sports.
Integrating math into reading instruction
- Since most students tend to struggle with math and
reading I will integrate both into the lesson. I will start by
reading As the doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins, a book that
involves fractions.
- For the students that struggle with reading and for the
ELL, I will work with them in a small group as well as
pair them up with the students who love to help.
- I will introduce them to a book about soccer and football.
This will help students know that sports may be different
in different parts of the world. I will also have a group
discussion on what the book will be about and test for
comprehension. This will allow for the ELL to feel
involved.
- To involve them in a physical activity since most students
are active, I will have the group divide each other in onethird, one-fourth, a half etc. to practice fractions as well
as play a game of soccer.
- The boys who love to talk about sports will set the rules
and explain the game of soccer to the group.
- I will change the colors of blue and green teams to the
colors red and yellow to avoid conflict.
- For the students who are shy and dont like to play soccer
I will have them be the referees and the score keepers.
- I will make sure that if any supplies are needed, I can
supply them.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local
community? (5 pts.)
Activities and physical movement is a great part of the Boys and
Girls club. I noticed that during the students outside time they
really enjoy playing soccer and forming teams to play together.
The Boys and Girls club has a mixture of races and ethnicity
backgrounds. For this reason, spending quality time, expressing
opinions, and learning information about each other serves as a
great way of accepting each others differences.
Based on this information I can tell the community is a wellblended one. This reflects well on the community as well as in the
Boys and Girls Club. Teaching the importance of accepting each
others differences and coming together as one.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need
additional challenge during this lesson (enrichment)? (5 pts)
I want to move away from the traditional strategies of partnering
up a student who is done with the assignment with a student who
needs help, and giving students additional work.
A variety of strategies include:
-

Sharing an additional book that relates to the lesson whom

they have read with the class.
Having them bring an item that was of importance from
one of the books and explaining the reason behind it.
Story Stretching: by creating a new ending to the story
based on the storys details and information.
Make a story up that explains the concept of fractions.
Retell story from another characters perspective.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need

additional language support? (5 pts)
-

Have them work in groups.

Have them work one-on-one with me.
Partner up with another student that speaks the same
language and that is able to translate.
They will be able to use dictionaries, translator, and tools
that might assist them.
Allow them to represent information by drawings and
illustrations.
