Proposal

Perception
I chose this as my title as my documentary investigates how people are
perceived based on their age.

Channel
I will show my documentary on BBC 3 as my documentary is a similar style to
many of the documentaries that are already shown on this channel. This channel
also is targeted at teenagers which is my target audience. This channel often
shows expository documentaries on a serious topic but presented in a light
hearted way.

Subject Idea
My subject is ageism as I feel that although it is not a big problem it is not talked
about as other form of prejudice are. My documentary will feature interviews with
people of different ages to give different perspectives. By asking people the
same or similar questions it will be easy to see the difference in opinion from
different ages. This will mean that by the end of the documentary the audience
will be able to decide their own opinion on the topic as various points will have
been presented so they can decide for themselves. The reason I chose to do this
was because I have noticed how people are treated differently based on their
age and havent seen a documentary on it before.

Intended Aim
The aim of my documentary is to show how age can make a difference in how
people are perceived and treated. My aim is that by the end of the documentary
the audience will have come to their own conclusion about the subject matter.

Audience
In order to establish a target audience I put together a survey and sent it out.
The results of the survey revealed that when asked whether they would watch a
documentary on ageism, over 70% said that they would. Another question I
asked in this survey was what age do you think would watch a documentary like
this? From the answers I received, 58% said they thought the most likely age
group to watch this would be 11-20 year olds. The other 43% was split between
21-30 year olds and 71 and up. The people in the 11-20 age bracket would most
likely be in socio-economic demographic E as the majority of them would be
students. The majority of the people who answered believed that this
documentary would not appeal particularly to one gender but instead appeal to
both.

Format
The format of this documentary is an expository documentary as the audience
are addressed directly. The documentary also presents multiple views therefore
making it objective as expository documentaries are. I have chosen this format
as I think it would work best as I am investigating how the youth are treated and
whether it is fair. However, I will also show different points of view through
interviews with different people of different ages. The audience will then be able

to make up their own mind on the topic after seeing a variety of views on the
topic.

Genre
The genre is a documentary as it is a factual programme that presents a topic to
the audience in a very straightforward way. It also includes interviews as well as
voice overs as many documentaries do.

Style
The style of my documentary is a realist as it is about a real topic and includes
real people, as well as being a narrativization as it follows a narrative structure
as it has a beginning, middle and end.

Budget
It would cost 71 per day to hire this professional camcorder so to use for five
days it would cost 355.

The tripod would cost 8 a day so over 5 days would cost 40. A LED light panel
that can be set up next to the camera costs 95 to hire for 5 days. A zoom H2
Audio Recorder would cost 60 to hire for 5 days. To hire a camera operator it
would cost 375-450 per 8 hours; while a sound operator would cost 230 per 8
hours. This means that for 16 hours of work it would cost between 980-1130
for crew hire. For crew and equipment it would cost about 1630.
The majority of my filming is in Henley so the travel cost would be very low.
However, some of the interviews are filmed in Chalfont St Peter. This is 21 miles
so as it costs around 40p per mile it would cost about 8.40 each way. This
means that in total transport would cost 16.80.
All this would make my budget 1646.80 in total.
