Describe the organization of the Electronic Instrument System
(EIS).
The EIS displays data on six identical Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)
screens referred to as Display Units (DUs). The EIS is broken into
two parts: the Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS),and the
Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor (ECAM).
What does the EFIS provide pilots?
The EFIS provides both pilots with all normal flight
instrument and navigation displays.
o The displays associated with the EFIS include
two Primary Flight Displays (PFDs), and two
Navigation Displays (NDs).
o The PFD should be displayed on the outer DUs
while the ND should be displayed on the inner
display units.
What does the ECAM system provide?
The ECAM provides aircraft system displays, fault
monitoring, and corrective procedure checklists.

The displays associated with this system include

the upper and lower ECAM.

The ND presents navigational related information in one of five
selectable modes. The 5 modes are:
1. ROSE ILS
2. ROSE VOR
3. ROSE NAV
4. ARC
5. PLAN
What is the purpose of the EFIS control panels?
The EFIS control panels, located on the glareshield, are used for the
following functions:
- displaying optional information on the ND. This
includes airports, NDBs, VORs, waypoints, and
constraints contained or entered in the FMS
database
- modifying the range presented on the ND
- selecting the desired mode of the ND (ROSE
ILS, ROSE VOR, ROSE NAV, ARC, or PLAN)
- displaying raw VOR and ADF data
- modifying and viewing the barometric pressure
used for altimeter settings
- controlling the ILS information presented on the
PFD
- turning the flight directors on and off
Describe which information the Air Data
Inertial Reference System (ADIRS) supplies to the EFIS.

The info supplied by the ADIRS can be broken down into 2 parts:
"air" based data, and "inertial" based data. The ADIRS is composed
of 3 Air Data Inertial Reference Units, or ADIRUs.
Each ADIRU is further subdivided into two components: the Air Data
Reference (ADR) portion, and the Inertial Reference Unit (IRU)
portion.
ADR:
- PFD: indicated airspeed (airspeed tape), mach,

barometric altitude (altitude tape), and
backup vertical velocity
- ND: TAS (true airspeed)
- SD: TAT & SAT
IRU:
- PFD: attitude, instantaneous vertical speed,

flight path vector, magnetic heading
(heading tape), and track
- ND: magnetic heading, GS (ground speed), true
wind, magnetic wind, track, and aircraft FMS
position (little yellow aircraft icon)
ADIRU 1 supplies information to the CA's PFD,
ND, and the temperature information

presented on the bottom of the SD.

ADIRU 2 supplies information to the FO's PFD

and ND.
ADIRU 3 serves as a backup.
Describe the general organization of the E/WD.
The E/WD is essentially divided into 3 sections:
1. primary engine operating parameters: this
includes N1, EGT, N2, and fuel flow

indications for each engine
2. supplemental operating information: this
includes the current engine thrust limit
mode, Fuel On Board, slat/flap positioning
3. the memo section: the memo section is divided
into left and right columns
Know which aircraft systems the System
Display (SD) provides information for.
The SD provides info for the following aircraft sys:
- engines: on the ENGINE page
- the pneumatic system: on the BLEED page
- the pressurization sys: on the CAB PRESS page
- the electrical system: on the ELEC page
- the hydraulic system: on the HYD page
- the fuel system: on the FUEL page
- the APU: on the APU page

- the air conditioning system: on the COND page

- doors, slides, oxy info: on the DOOR/OXY page
- landing gear and brakes: on the WHEEL page
- the flight control system: on the F/CTL page
The default inflight CRUISE page also presents information forthe
engines, air conditioning, and pressurization systems.
Describe how color coding is organized for the ECAM.
GREEN: indicates normal long term operation
WHITE: used for remarks and labeling to guide
you during procedures
BLUE: used for units of measure and ECAM
action steps
AMBER: a failure or configuration needing
crew awareness, but not necessarily
immediate action
RED: indicates a failure or configuration
requiring immediate crew action
MAGENTA: used for messaging
AMBER "X"s: indicates that the information is
not available
Describe the display priority of the EFIS.
The PFD takes priority over the ND. If the outer DU is turned off or
fails, the PFD automatically transfers to the inner DU.
Describe the display priority of the ECAM.

The E/WD takes priority over the SD. If the upper

ECAM DU is turned off or fails, the E/WD automatically transfers to
the lower ECAM DU.
Know the difference in function between the two ND
brightness control knobs.
The inner knob is used to power and control the
brightness of the ND.
The outer knob is used to vary the brightness of
weather radar and GPWS displays.

Explain the functions of the three Display
Management Computers (DMCs).
The DMCs process all of the signals received from the sensors &
computers within the aircraft for display on the EIS DUs.
- DMC 1 provides information to the CA's PFD,
ND, and the E/WD.
- DMC 2 provides information to the FO's PFD,
ND, and the SD.
- DMC 3 serves backup to either DMC1 or DMC2.
Explain the functions of the two Flight Warning Computers
(FWCs).
The FWCs perform for the following functions:
- generating E/WD cautions and warnings

- the abnormal procedure checklists on the E/WD

- MASTER CAUT & MASTER WARN light
- generating aural alerts which include:
1.generating the Single Chime (SC)
associated with master cautions
2. generate the Continuous Repetitive Chime
(CRC) associated with master warnings
- managing the memo section of the E/WD
- providing auto aural callouts
- generating the STATUS page
Explain how the FWCs classify malfunction messaging.
Crews will be confronted with 2 classes of malf. messaging: Class 1
and Class 2 messages.
- Class 1: these are malfunctions specifically
presented on the E/WD

a. Class 1 messages are divided into either
cautions or warnings
b. Cautions are further subdivided into two
levels: level 1 and level 2
- Class 2: these messages are presented on the
STATUS page; they reflect systems

affected by minor degradation which
will ultimately require maintenance

How is a Class 1 warning displayed?
Class 1 Warnings:
- the CRC sounds
- both MASTER WARN lights flash
- a red failure message appears on the E/WD
- the affected systems display page appears on
the SD
- fault lights illuminate on the affected system's
control panel
How is a Class 1, Level 2 Caution displayed?
Class 1, Level 2 Cautions:
- the SC sounds
- both MASTER CAUT lights illuminate steady
- an amber failure message appears on the E/WD
- the affected systems display page appears on
the SD
- amber fault lights illuminate on the affected
system'scontrol panel
How is a Class 1, Level 1 Caution displayed?
Class 1, Level 1 Cautions:
- an amber failure message appears on the
E/WD
- in some cases, an amber fault light will
illuminate on the affected system's control panel

How is a Class 2 message displayed?

Class 2 message:
- presented in the lower right corner of the
STATUS page under "MAINTENANCE"
- examples include "F/CTL" or "FUEL" (presented
in white)
Describe how failure messages and their
associated action steps are presented on the E/WD.
When a malfunction is detected, the respective failure message is
automatically displayed in the memo section of the E/WD. There are
three types of failure messages: Independent, Primary and
Secondary.
How are independent failure messages displayed on the
E/WD?
Independent: these are malfunctions that DO NOT
affect any other aircraft components.
-presented in left column of the memo section
-the affected system is underlined.
-the failure title is presented right after the
affected sys...example: "F/CTL ELAC 1 FAULT"
- these are typically associated with CAUTIONS,
so they are displayed in amber.
- any associated checklist action steps are
presented in blue beneath the failure title.
How are primary failure messages displayed on the E/WD?

Primary: these are malfunctions that DO affect other aircraft

components
-presented in left column of the memo section
-the affected system is underlined similar to
Independent failures
-the failure title is boxed
-these are typically associated with WARNINGS,
so they are displayed in red
-any associated checklist action steps are
presented in blue beneath the failure title
How are secondary failure messages displayed on the E/WD?
Secondary: these reflect systems that are affected as the result of a
primary failure
-presented in the right column of the memo
section in amber
Explain the functions of the two System Data Acquisition
Concentrators (SDACs).
- The SDACs collect data from numerous aircraft
systems. This information is then relayed to the
DMCs for display on the SD.
- The SDACs also monitor Level 2 Caution
tolerances. If a particular system exceeds a
tolerance, the SDACs then signal the FWCs to
generate Level 2 Cautions.
Describe how to tell the difference between a DMC failure vs. a

DU failure.
The DMCs are monitored by the FWCs; therefore, a failed DMC will
trigger a failure message and applicable action steps on the E/WD.
The DUs are not monitored by the FWCs; therefore, there
will be no failure messages supporting a DU failure. Additionally:
- If a DMC fails, the three DUs supplied by that
DMC will go blank and contain a diagonal line

going across each of the three affected DUs.
- If a DU fails, the screen(s) will simply go
completely blank or distort.

Give a general description of how pumps are displayed on the

SD.
Pumps: presented in a "square" format
- a green vertical line within the square (inline
green) indicates the pump is on and pump
pressure is normal.
- a green horizontal line within the square
(crossline green) indicates the pump is off in
accordance with normal automatic logic.
- an amber horizontal line within the square
(crossline amber) indicates the pump has been
manually selected.
OFF
- an amber "LO" within the square indicates the pump is on but

pump pressure is low
Give a general description of how valves are displayed on the
SD.
Valves: presented in a "circle" format
- inline green within the circle: indicates the valve
is open
- crossline green within the circle: indicates the
valve is closed
- inline amber within the circle: indicates
disagreement between the actual valve position

and the commanded position. Specifically, the

valve is stuck open when it's being commanded
to close.

Describe the STATUS page.
The STATUS page, located on the SD, provides an operational
summary of the aircraft's status. It's always presented as the last
page during an ECAM non-normal procedure. The STATUS page
contains the following information:
- operating limitations (Speed, Flt Level etc.)
- approach procedural action steps that relate to
the current malfunction(s)
- additional operating information
- a listing of all cancelled caution failure messages
- a listing of all inoperative systems and or
components.
- a listing of all Class 2 messages (These msgs
are only present when the engs are shut down)

- by pressing the STS pb on the ECAM control

panel
- if FLAPS 1 is selected while in the approach
phase offlight (assuming information is present
on the page)
Describe the various functions of the SWITCHING panel.
The SWITCHING panel allows the crew to change the sources
that supply the DUs with information.
The NORM position is the normal setting for all four
switches; this allows all of the displays to receive
information from their normal suppliers.
Describe the function of ATT HDG on the SWITCHING panel.
ATT HDG: used in response to IRU failures
- CAPT 3: the IRU from ADIRU 3 replaces the IRU
from ADIRU 1
- F/O 3: the IRU from ADIRU 3 replaces the IRU
from ADIRU 2
Describe the function of AIR DATA on theSWITCHING panel.
AIR DATA: used in response to ADR failures
- CAPT 3: the ADR from ADIRU 3 replaces the
ADR from ADIRU 1
- F/O 3: the ADR from ADIRU 3 replaces the ADR
from ADIRU 2
Describe the function of EIS DMC on the SWITCHING panel.

Describe the function of the ECAM/ND XFR on the SWITCHING
panel?
ECAM/ND XFR: used in response to DU failures
- CAPT: the display of the lower ECAM is
transferred to the CA's ND
- FO: the display of the lower ECAM is transferred
to the FO's ND
Describe the controls of the ECAM control panel.
ECAM brightness control knobs:
System Page Pbs: selects the aircraft systems
display page
CLR pbs: clears failure msgs& sequences
through SD pgs following a non-normal.
- When used to clear a message, all of the
associated action steps are also cleared.
- If there are multiple failure msgs, only the top
msg and the actions steps associated with that
particular underlined title, will be cleared.
STS pb: used for manually selecting the STATUS
page on the SD
RCL pb: used to recall failure msgs previously
cleared by the CLR pbs
- if there are no suppressed msgs, "NORMAL"

appears in the memo section

- if held for more than three seconds, the E/WD
displays CAUTION msgs suppressed through
the use of the EMER CANC pb
T.O. CONFIG pb: this pb simulates the application
of takeoff power. Pressing it serves as a
test; warnings are triggered if aircraft is
not correctly configured for takeoff.
EMER CANC pb: pb affects warnings and
cautions in the following ways:
WARNINGS:
-cancels the CRC for as long as the failure
condition exists
-extinguishes flashing MASTER WARN lts
- does not affect the failure message
CAUTIONS:
-cancels the SC, extinguishes the MASTER
CAUT, and clears the failure message
- when STATUS pg is viewed, the msg
"CANCELLED CAUTION", and the
associated cancelled failure msg, appears in
white in the lower left corner the page.
-holding the RCL pb for more than 3 secs
will restore the CANCELLED CAUTION
