ARTWORK REQUIREMENTS
1. This competition is open to all artists who are 18 years or older.
2. Each artist may enter only one painting.
3. Work must have been completed in the last two years.
4. Work previously exhibited in any national or international show is not eligible.
5. Painting must be primarily water-based media on paper (Yupo, Tyvek, illustration board and
Aquabord permitted).
6. Other media, if used, must be in conjunction with the watermedia, which must be dominant.
7. No digital media, photography, prints or reproductions may be used in the painting.
8. Paintings done in a class or workshop setting by a student may not be submitted.
9. Source material must be the artists original and not derived from any published references or
from photographs not taken by the artist.
FRAMING
1. Minimum image size is 9 x 12.
2. Maximum frame size is 48 x 48.
3. No glass is permitted. All work must be under plexiglass.
4. Plain frames, no wider than 1, ARE PREFERRED.
5. Frame must be sturdy enough to support the artwork without buckling the plexiglass.
6. Frame must be wired for hanging. No other types of hangers are allowed.
7. Mats, if used, must be white or ecru unless an integral part of the artwork.
FEES, SALES & LIABILITY
1. The entry fee is $40 for members, $60 for non-members.
2. A non-member may join as an Associate Member by paying the $50 annual dues.
3. All work must be for sale.
4. There will be no price changes after acceptance.
5. NWS is responsible for all sales and will retain a 30% commission.
6. Artists should carry their own insurance. NWS and its representatives will take the utmost care
but are not responsible for damage or loss, whatever the cause.
ONLINE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
1. NWS Members: Before Registering, you will need your NWS Member ID
Go to www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org and login on the upper right
Your name will appear. Click on it and select View profile
Copy your Member ID (8-digit number) to use in your registration
Go to www.NWSExhibition.com and register checking the I am a Member box
2. Non-Members: Go to www.NWSExhibition.com and sign up as a non-Member with an email
address and password, following webpage instructions
3. You will need the following information about your entry:
Title of the painting
Size of frame and size of painting in inches (height x width, i.e., 22 x 30)
Selling price
Year completed (2014, 2015 or 2016)
Medium transparent watercolor, watermedia, or watermedia with collage
4. You will need a digital .jpg image of your painting saved on your computer per these instructions:
Image is no more than 1500 pixels on the longest side, 300 dpi; file size less than 2.0 Mb.
File name is your last name, first name. Example: SmithNancy.jpg

AWARDS
More than $40,000 in cash, purchase and merchandise awards will be awarded, including the $3,000
Vanguard Award for an artist accepted for the first time whose painting is non-objective and innovative.
JURYING PROCEDURES
The Annual International Exhibition is selected in two stages. The Jury of Selection reviews all images
and selects those to be presented at the gallery for the Juror of Awards to view.
Artists whose work has been accepted may apply for Signature Member status by submitting three (3)
matted paintings with the accepted painting. The Jury of Selection evaluates these submissions and
makes the determination. Signature Membership is also available to any artist who has been accepted
into three (3) NWS Annual International Exhibitions. To apply, contact NWS4membership@gmail.com.
Paintings that do not match the submitted entry in content or quality may be eliminated at the second
jurying stage. The Juror of Awards views the paintings and determines the awards.

JUROR OF AWARDS: Derrick Cartwright has taught American art at a number of universities. His
museum experience includes directorial service at Musee dArt American Giverny, Hood Museum, San
Diego Museum of Art and Seattle Art Museum. He is the Director of University Galleries and Professor of
Practice in the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History at the University of San Diego.

AGREEMENT At the time an artists painting is accepted, the artist will agree to and sign the following
before being accepted into the Exhibition:
Submission of this image, if accepted by the Jury of Selection, shall constitute an Agreement on the part
of the artist to comply with the conditions set forth in this Prospectus, including the following:

I hereby release and discharge the officers of National Watercolor Society (NWS) and its
representatives and employees from any and all claims occasioned by damage or loss of said
painting while in the possession of NWS.

No work accepted for the exhibition may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition.

Permission is granted to reproduce the painting in the catalog of the exhibition and to use this
image for educational and publicity purposes.

I realize if my work is selected and I withdraw, or it does not meet eligibility requirements set forth
in the prospectus including that it has not been juried into any national or international exhibit, I
will be disqualified immediately and any award given will be rescinded. I will not be permitted to
enter again for two years.
