SECTION - A
(Reading - 20 Marks)
1.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the answers from the given options.
One of the greatest lessons I have learnt in my life is to pay as much attention to the
means of work as to its end. He was a great man from whom I learnt it, and his own
life was a practical demonstration of this great principle. I have been always learning
great lessons from that one principle, and it appears to me that all the secrets of success
are there : to pay as much attention to the means as to the end.
Our great defect in life is that we are so much drawn to the ideal, the goal is so
much more enchanting, so much more alluring, so much bigger in our mental horizon,
that we lose sight of the details altogether.
But whenever failure comes, if we analyse it critically, in ninety-nine percent of
the cases we shall find that it was because we did not pay attention to the means .....
we forget that it is the cause that produces the effect.
If we examine our own lives, we find that the greatest cause of sorrow is this : we
take up something, and put our whole energy on it ...... The bee came to sip honey, but
its feet stuck to the honey - pot and it could not get away. Again and again we find
ourselves in that state................. We want to get everything from nature, but we find in
the long run that nature takes everything from us - depletes us, and casts us aside.
The great secret of true success, of true happiness, then, is this : the man who asks
for no return, the perfectly unselfish man, is the most successful. It seems to be a
paradox....
Ask nothing; want nothing in return . Give what you have to give, it will come back
to you__________.
(a) According to Swami Vivekanand, the secret of success is to __________.
(i)
pay more attention to the means than to the end.
(ii) pay as much attention to the means of work as to its end.
(iii) pay less attention to the means than to the end.
(iv) pay more attention to the end than to the means.
(b) What we forget is that __________.
(i)
the cause produces the effect
(ii) the effect produces the cause
(iii) cause and effect are unrelated
(iv) cause and effect occur simultaneously.
(c) Swami Vivekanand says that we try to take everything away from nature _______.
(i)
and this causes depletion of natural resources
(ii) and in the long run we emerge winners
(iii) but nature gives us as much as we take
(iv) but nature takes everything from us and depletes us.
(d) A paradox is a situation __________.
(i)
where one thing automatically leads to the other.
(ii) what is expected does not happen
(iii) that has two opposite features
(iv) where the unexpected happens.
(e) What is the opposite of success ?
(i)
failure
(ii) sorrow
(iii) despair
(iv) sorrow

THE ECHOING GREEN
The sun does arise,
And make happy the skies,
The merry - bells ring
To welcome the spring;
The skylark and thrush,
The birds of the bush,
Sing louder around
To the bells cheerful sound,
While our sports shall be seen
On the Echoing Green.
Old John, with white hair,
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak,
Among the old folk.
They laugh at our play,
And soon as they all say;
Such, such were the joys
When we all, girls and boys,
In our youth-time were seen
On the Echoing Green.
Till the little ones, weary,
No more can be merry;
The sun does descend,
And our sports have an end.
Round the laps of their mothers
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in the nest,
Are ready for rest,
And sport no more seen
On the darkening Green.
William Blake

Read the following passage carefully :

GULLIVERS CLOTHES
Two hundred seamstresses were employed to make my shirts, and linen for my bed
and table, all of the strongest and coarsest kind they could get ; which however they
were forced to quilt together in several folds, for the thickest was some degrees finer
than lawn. Their linen was usually three inches wide, and three feet made a piece. The
seamstresses took my measure as I lay on the ground, one standing at my neck, and
another at my mid leg, with a strong cord extended, that each held by the end, while
the third measured the length of the cord with a rule an inch long. Then they measured
my right thumb, and desired no more; for by a mathematical computation, that twice
round the thumb is once round the wrist, and so on to neck and waist, and by the help
of my old shirt, which I displayed on the ground before them for a pattern, they fitted
me exactly. Three hundred tailors were employed in the same manner to make my
clothes.
But they had another contrivance for taking my measure. I kneeled down, and they
raised a ladder from the ground to my neck; upon this ladder one of them mounted,
and let fall a plump line from my collar to the floor, which just answered the length
of my coat; but my waist and arms I measured myself.

No matter which age we are talking about, linguistic skills have always been essential
for socio - economic reasons. In the ancient civilizations, the leaders were always men
who were articulate, with highly developed oral and aural communicative skills. In
feudal times, the aristocracy had the privilege of benefiting from education. In the
modern age, individuals with good verbal skills are in greater demand than those who
may have a technical edge but inadequate language skills. It, therefore, becomes
essential for schools to pay more, if not equal, attention to developing and honing the
communicative skills of their words. A broad-based programme which stresses the
acquisition of verbal skills would be in order. The class room facilitators, that is the
teachers, should themselves be highly articulate individuals so that they can be role
models.
