What is the function of correlation research ?

1. To describe and measure relationship between
two or more variables.
2. To determine if there is a relationship between
two variables or more and how strong or weak the
relationship is.
3. To predict an outcome among two or more
variables (Prediction Studies).

Correlation
The relationship between more than one variable
is considered as correlation which means a simple
correlation relate one variable with another
variable.

When is the correlation said to be simple correlation?

The correlation is said to be simple if there are

only two variables under study or being analyzed.
X
Y
Example:
- The relationship between students motivation and
students achievement.
- The relationship between students sense of
humor and students performance in drama.

What is Regression ?
According to Cohen and Holliday (1996) regression
analysis enables the researcher to predict the
specific value of one variable when we know or
assume values of the other variable(s). That is,
the researcher can calculate the effect of one
independent variable on one dependent variable.

When is the regression said to be simple regression?

The regression is said to be simple if there are only

two variables under study in which the researchers
are able to predict one variable (predicted) based
on another variable (predictor).
X

Simple Regression
Example:
- The researcher may see the effect of hours of
study on levels of students achievement in an
examination. The researchers are able to see how
much improvement will be made to an
examination by a given number of hours of study.

Multiple Regression
Multiple Regression extension of simple linear
regression.
Multiple Regression is a statistical procedure for
examining the combined relationship of multiple
independent variables with a single dependent variable.
It is used to predict relationship between the first set of
variables and the second set of variables.

Example

Gender
IQ
Academic Major

(Predictor Variable)

Students GPAs (Outcome)

Canonical Regression
To predict the relationship between two
multivariate sets of variables (vectors), all
measured on the same individual.

Example:
Motivation
Reading
Writing

Listening
Speaking

Path Analysis

It is used to test the likelihood of a causal

connection among three or more variables
explained by path diagram.
