Samuel Ward-Packard and Lane Sailer Kashmir The question of Kashmir is one of great importance to China, as China itself has sovereignty over the Aksai Chin and Shaksgam regions and has borders with the regions disputed by Pakistan and India. On the basis of the settlement of 1963, China strongly rejects Indias claim to the Shaksgam region (Trans-Karakoram tract). China also strongly rejects Indias claim to Chinas sovereign territory of Askai Chin. China values highly its long and fruitful relationship with Pakistan. China feels that much of the dispute is a consequence of past Indian aggression. However, China also values its friendship with India and its increasingly beneficial economic partnership with that state. As such, China calls for a commitment to the principles of dialog and negotiation by both countries, as previously encouraged by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1172. Israel The Peoples Republic believes that balance is vital in dealing with the IsraeliPalestinian Conflict. China recognizes the plight of the Palestinian Arabs, and has always supported the concept of Palestinian statehood. As our Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi recently said, [China] will continue its support for Palestinian people to resume their legitimate national rights and promote long-term bilateral friendly cooperation. China believes that an end to the internal conflicts of the Palestinian state apparatus is a pressing concern. China also values its strong military and trade ties with Israel. We welcomed the dialog made possible by Prime Minister Ehud Olmerts 2007 visit, and we recognize the necessity of the Jewish state. China considers the Middle East to be a vital strategic region of the world, and believes that security in the region is paramount, especially in light of the ever-increasing importance of energy resources. Crimea China recognizes the Russian Federation as one of its most important allies. Under the 2001 Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship, relations and cooperation between our nation and Russia reached a historical pinnacle. China will strive to preserve that situation. China was troubled by the recent conflict in Georgia, as it also recognizes Georgia as an important trading partner and ally, and called for peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue. China calls for the same sort of dialogue over any questions concerning the Crimea. The Ukraine has been a strong supporter of China on the issues of Tibet and Taiwan, and China hopes to reciprocate that support wherever possible.
